The third outfit reminds me of Phoebe Buffay. you shoud made a video dressing like your favourite TV/film characters, I think you own a lot of items you could use to recreate 90s/00s film outfits.
@@susanmarielassiter6670 😊Yes, def Stevie Nicks🎶. It's likely a generational thing. My older sibling loved her, but I was a fairweather fan. I certainly liked her music from listening through the walls or on the radio📻, but I didn't become aware of her fashion style until well into adulthood. 🖱Clicked on a fashion article yesterday about Preppy Fashion. The author's primary example was the Gossip Girls. No mention of Ralph Lauren, the Bratpack, or Cher in Clueless. How about Ali McGraw from Love Story in her Edgy Blue Collar Ivy League!? Preppy Style has been around since the existence of prep schools. Edgy fashion from the 1940s when women wore menswear & went into factories. Elvis & James Dean personified rebellion in the 50s & so on. 🔄 Styles are simply regurgitated & freshened from the past. I guess the fashion influencers covering such things want to choose relatable & familiar style icons to the latest generation. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
I definitely think "rules"/"systems"/"hacks" are about what helps you be more creative and feel better, if you're struggling or need a refresh - someone might need a reminder to do more/accessorize and someone else might need to pare down their instincts to get an outfit that feels better to them in the long run. I kinda like how the point system can help someone find a happy medium as opposed to too boring or too much, so it would help a lot of people, esp if they like to work within a formula/stricter rules.
I definitely thought the outfits with the added items looked more interesting and intentional. I had never heard of this point system before, so thanks for the informative video!
I haven't really seen this on tiktok but have heard of the 7 point method before and my understanding of the 7 points system was that some items that are more of a statement are worth 2 points and simpler items are worth 1, so you aren't necessarily putting together 7 individual items every time. For example I think the sparkly cardigan you wore with the black maxi dress would be 2 points not 1.
Ooooh! That may be the original idea and I had just come across a different version! I could definitely see maybe that making more sense since it's then not just about adding a bunch of accessories every time! I'll have to look into it!
I would love to see this in action in the hot summer. I feel like layering is my crutch. I look great layering in fall and winter and look boring and ugh in summer when it’s too hot to layer.
This is so funny because I feel like I'm the opposite in winter..it's just jumper and jeans. That's it, in the summer I find it so much more interesting to layer and style !
You're really looking like a 90s icon in this video! I suck at accessorizing and i'm not on tiktok so i appreciate you bringing knowledge to the masses like this. I do like the basic looks but the accessorized versions are nice! I think a median would be best in all cases, like the velvet maxi dress with just the necklaces i think would have been my optimal version of that outfit. but it's really useful to think about needing to add accessories to force yourself to practice and i should try it!
This is very useful for me because I was thinking of upping my accessory game for some time, and I didn't quite know where to start. I agree with you that the point system can get too mechanistic very quickly, but I guess that the nice thing about it is that it motivates you to consider adding extra elements to your outfits instead of just going with basics. And from there you can start to experiment and get creative, and hopefully not get too caught up on the points :)
I love all the outfits with added stuff! The originals are nice and look good, but they are a bit boring. I wouldn't look twice if you walked past me in those, but with the new outfits I would do a double take and be like wow that is stylish. Sometimes I feel like 6 points would be enough too (like the second outfit without the belt and jacket or the third without the cardigan). I feel like always trying to hit 7 points can be too much, so maybe a good rule of thumb is maybe adding one more thing than you would usually go for!
I liked all the variations, even if I tend to keep it basic in everyday life 😊 In my opinion, make-up also makes a big difference. If you look at typical French outfits, for example, red lipstick is often part of it. In that case, you could certainly count the lipstick as a point.
This 7 points system seems more ideal/friendly for people who live in cooler/colder environments where the chances of a chilly day are higher than let's say a hot humid city
Two and three were my favorite, I would honestly love a video of multiple looks styling that denim dress it's like your perfect dress! I can see this being helpful if you feel like your outfit is boring, or for people who feel like they put on too many accessories to dial it back to a 10 point outfit at most.
With the jeans and the plaid burgundy shirt, I’d totally wear a burgundy slouchy beanie for that kind of laid back almost masculine look. I love it with a side hobo bag.😊
i have cute pieces in my closet but i found this method helpful when attempting to layer to make the most of those items! it helps me to see how much of an impact a small element can have on your entire outfit, such as adding a headband.
I've never heard of this method but now I want to try it out, I really liked your 'simple' outfits but adding points definitely elevated them! bonus points for kind of making a dutch flag with your second outfit 😉
Wow, I'm shocked by how much of a difference the extra points made in the overall impact of the outfits. I agree that it seems important to know when to stop and also to find the harmony in the accessories. I'm going to try it!
I really think the denim dress one with cardigan makes it amazing together!! So perfect ❤ also I really enjoyed you pushing yourself on the outfits as a challenge and came up with beautiful and inspiring ideas!! I'm going to using this help me make some new outfits! THANK YOU ALEXA 💛
It’s a fun idea to play around with! What about statement makeup? Like is a bold lips point? More recently I’ve played with scarves, bandanas, broaches/pins, and ties as more accessory options. I also think some things might be more than 1 pt which another commenter said since some things have more visual ‘weight’, like an all denim suit or a sparkly cardigan, but the utility of the points is in the playing around and asking ‘what if?’ And I love that you shared it with us !
I preferred all of the outfits you made before using the 7 point method... they looked more like *you* and the 7 point outfits looked more *internet* to me
I started dressing in the more is more category a couple years ago and I feel so much more stylish. Sometimes I think an outfit needs more to work and not less.
Oh interesting! I think I heard about this "point system" before but how I remember it was not "you need to have 7 points to make an outfit stylish" but that your outfit should have an "odd score" so you could have 5 points or 7 (or 3 going really basic I guess) because of you do "6 points" it will somehow look out of place or not as put together. Can't tell you who came up with this system but I'm guessing tiktok had remodeled it and made it an all or nothing kind of thing
Genuinely feel inspired by watching you do this! The outfits ended up with more character and a stronger voice, so interesting! Loving the content recently 👏👏👏👏👏
i love this video and i do think there is something to this method of 'trying to add more things'. On the other hand, as you said yourself in the conclusion, I can imagine an outfit being ruined because you have 'put on too much'. Honestly would have loved to see an example of this in your video, I think it would have added a lot of context to it!
I like both the befores and the afters. At first I leaned more towards the afters because they look really put together, but I think wearing too many things can look a little overwhelming or like I’m trying too hard sometimes, and the befores can look more effortless. So I think I lean more towards the befores Edit: now that I’ve watched the whole video, I think I liked the afters more overall 😂😂😂
I knew a version of this that counts each item as a point and each bold color/print/texture as another. So your black velvet dress would count 2 points from the start, as well as your red tights (color), your leather jacket (texture), the floral skirt (print) and the plaid shirt (maybe 3 points, one for the item by itself, another for the print and one more for the purple color). I feel it makes it easier to reach 10.
Also a style idea for your black and white flower skirt: 💡 I would try another black and patterned shirt on top like black and white checkers but a larger print 💡 you could wear it with a red and white striped cardigan think JCrew lady jacket vibes 💡 wear a top with contrasting colored print like blue and green for example to counteract the small ditsy print and print clash 💡 wear neon on top!! Brinton colors will pop with the black. Hope you like the suggestions ❤
I actually adore this, not because it will change my outfits, but because I love to accessorize and people can be rude. So, if i have an excuse like "I'm trying out a thing I saw online" then we can have a convo and I won't feel like i'm being belittled or made fun of. Also, please make a 90s inspired vid! you look so good in 90s stuff and from what i saw you seem to already own a lot either from that can be styled like that era
i feel this so hard!!! I purposely avoid over accessorizing because my “fashiony”clothing choices already stand out where i live in a sea of leggings and t shirts /: i hate sticking out like a sore thumb and getting comments, i’m always toning my outfits down not amping them up!
I think it could be more difficult to use this point system in actual winter, when its very cold outside. I mean like 20 F. Because no one is going to be walking around with open coats then to see sweaters underneath. Of course I DO see joggers here in shorts in January running along the snowy Oak Leaf Trail (that always scares me because I fear they will step on ice and go flying to break something) but that is not me. I get cold easily! Yes you can wear hats, gloves + scarf but the coats are often big + bulky. I am getting better this year at being stylish in autumn but I think actual winter will be harder. Esp for when you are outside and walking about!!
the patchwork cardigan made layering the white turtleneck and red tights under the denim dress look more cohesive. less is more for me too (mostly bec i'm lazy), but styling / accessorising def made a huge difference! the witchy 90s look is my fave :)
Hi, I'm from the 90s & Y2k area. Some tips for you... Number 7 can always be sunglasses & if you're not into wearing a lot of jewelry, items added to a bag like charms or a scarf were big in Y2k .. also the chain belt, I still have mine! It looks the same as yours. You can wear it how ever, like a skinny belt, a floating belt, Avril Lavigne has ideas on this time with chains and belts. I hope this helps🇳🇿🫶🏽
10:17 I think a great way to counteract this without having to be super top heavy with the layers is pulling some inspo from punk fashion. Not to copy it exactly ofc bc that's not everyone's style, but to pull some concepts and personalize them might be fun to mess around with! Especially since it originated as things that were intentionally "unfashionable" so it could help with some out of the box thinking
Imo it's about personal prefference. Personally I like the simpler outfits more. I do think I could follow a system like this if jackets and button ups and hairclips count. It's nice if it lets people play around and be creative. I hope people keep in mind that it's more of a helpful system and nor a rule book.
The before and after were all great, it’s just different strokes for different folks! You know what my issue is with “layering = fashionable” rules? It’s triple digits or just below here most of the year, and I am in no way going to stick another layer of any type of clothes onto my body, or wear a scarf to be destroyed by sweat, or a cute belt to make my waist a hot mess 😂! I would love to see you do a “does this 7 point rule work in triple digits” in the summer or something!
Okay just for fun because I like this idea and had more ideas for adding points to the examples: For the first outfit, to get to 7 points my first thought was throw on a bolo tie. What you did looked good but I think the vibe with the denim shirt open vs buttoned up is very different. A bolo tie to just add one more point to the original might keep the og vibe while adding some flair. For the second outfit, since you didn't like the belt (I thought it was cute!) what about some of those collar clips/pins? Something on the dainty side or that would tie in the color of the tights.
I must sayy those flared jeans are by far the most flattering jeans on you! I think it's because the flare starts from midthighs (or from the hips kinda) and not from the knees.
I liked the first outfit (jeans and denim shirt) better with the shirt open, the belt, and the necklaces. I like all three versions of the second outfit although I'd skip the headband. The cardigan with it is great. Outfit 3 looks better with the accessories, in my opinion. The seven point system is just slightly different that what I do: 1) base (dress, jumpsuit, or pants and top), 2) completer piece (cardigan, vest, jacket), 3) accessories (shoes, belt, scarf, hat, jewelry), and one of them needs to be 4) a focal point. It works and provides lots of variety in outfits.
Generally what I do is I will try different things on + look in the mirror to see if I think it goes together. Sometimes I may originally think the items go good together but then later if I try them on I may not like that sweater with those pants. So then I change it. I am still wearing my sandals here so my sock color choice is a big part of my outfits. And yes I wear socks with my Xero sandals! Wearing wool ones now. 😂 I thought my outfit today looked quite good as in shades of blue. Nice warm hoodie.
I believe the adding to your Jean dress was too much. The others were okay. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I appreciate your enthusiasm for each outfit.
This makes me think of the points of interest House of Colour uses in their style classes. In their system a point of interest is more like: A print, a collar, a belt, a bold colour (block), lipstick, shoes, jackets or even a styled haircut. Anything that modifies the 'base', as far as I understand it. They don't have a set amount of points, it depends on the person. For example: I don't like to be cluttered with points of interests, but I do make an effort nowadays to hit at least 7 or 8 that suit my personality and style.
I’ve been religiously watching your content since before you hit 100K. Love your videos, even now as a trans masc person, I still get a lot out of your fashion and thrifting videos!
That outfit at 7:22 is so good on you. I would still count my watch, earrings etc. Even if you wear them every day, and they seem default and not style points to you, they are 'new' to the people who see you. On the other hand I wouldn't count socks unless they show when I'm standing up. Most of the time my socks don't show, so they are just like underwear and bra.
Hey Alexa where did you find those black jeans??? they’re exactly what i’ve been looking for! and that Phoebe Buffay maxi sweater outfit made me audibly gasp, we NEED to see you wear it again and again🖤💜💙
My formula for the outfit at 10:00 would be tights, tall boots, skirt, collared blouse, boxy cropped sweater vest, bag. As it is, it reminds me of a 10-year-old. I never liked socks with tights and I am heartily sick of it now. Just my opinion as an old Gen Xer!!
