Gabriel and I agree that it’s hard to maintain languages we have learned when we are constantly attracted to learning new ones.

I like the title '...REALISTIC...' and the video contains lots of good advice for the perfectionists out there, like myself. After years of agonising about parking languages, the penny dropped that it's fine to return after a break and get quickly back up to speed; I've found this recently with Czech and Dutch. I also liked the analogy of finding your way to a friend's house and Gabriel's thoughts on 'needing' to use his German. It does take a certain amount of courage and self-confidence to do this, though

I always love speaking to my mum and grandparents in Russian because it reminds me that I can actually speak Russian. I spend most of my time reading/listening to things in English, and now German, and so I feel like I can't speak the language because I don't really have the opportunity to use it, but it's like what you said, where you have it in a database and it's so lovely to bring it to the forefront, despite some holes that have arisen since the last time you spoke it

I have found that I'm more interested in reading literatures, and listening to videos/watching movies in the languages I am learning, than in making sure that my speech is competent. I do work on the speech patterns, but I don't get hung up if I'm not very good. I sometimes communicate by writing in the language online, but mostly I find that reading and listening well motivates me to learn languages.

Hello Mr. Kaufmann! I'm a 16 year old from Canada in the process of learning Russian. Your videos have been invaluable! Since you've learned Russian, I wanted to ask: do you have any particular books in Russian that you enjoyed reading? I'm not quite at the level for Tolstoy and Dostoevsky originals, but really anything is helpful. Thanks so much for all your amazing advice!

Realistic Polyglot? Wat?! It's obviously 90% hobby. You're not going to tell video gamers that it's unrealistic battle aliens all day, there's no need to tell polyglots that they aren't really going to be switching language every room they go into.
