I fully agree with you. Plus or breaks away from the all familiar Dragonball scene. Other great anime characters do exist. He could even do inuyasha or siaoran from tsubasa reservoir chronicles.

@@yusiuc5533 I was thinking from part 3. It would still be somewhat in his comfort zone, and will hopefully get him to research the series itself. Araki draws heavily from western art, and I'm curious to see how James will react to each iteration.

I’m scrolling through the comments and seeing that though some people say it’s better now, but there are still people that say it’s not like the original. The whole point of this challenge is to draw an anime character adapted to an American style. Like seriously, people literally just want to see him draw Goku exactly the same.

Salty dragon ball fans are everywhere, just don't mind them... This nonsense happens all the time! The second they see Goku drawn in a style that isn't the original style, they start hating. I've seen it happen too much.

Yeah I get you too, and I don't wish to insult, but I'm not talking about normal criticism. I'm talking about the people who just hate on Goku/Dragonball artwork drawn in a western style, yeah I know it sounds stupid and far fetched, but it's a real thing and that only goes to show how stupid it actually is. Even on the Dragonball subreddit, you always get those few people that have to drop the obligatory "The original style is better", or "try to draw in the original style next time, I'm not a fan of this style" most of the time a drawing like this is posted. Whether they do it intentionally or to troll is unknown, but it doesn't change the fact that it's annoying, and has no need to be done, especially on great pieces of artwork that stay true to the source.

I wouldn't blame dragon ball fans for being salty in particular, for an example I understood very well what he was trying to do and I really liked the drawing. It looked far better than the previous one as the previous one really did not look one bit like goku.

Actually, the people hated the first goku art cause the western style made goku too much of a bodybuilder than an actual speedy fighter, there’s just too much muscle and that’s why most of the people disliked it

Now this is the goku we've been waiting for! Great job man! The reason why I don't really like the first one is because you made him really buff, which made him look like the hulk. This one is better because you kept it more in line to the original while adding that western style to it making it a great fusion of both.

+TheBoxOfficeArtist look you weren´t wrong with the face the thing you did wrong was doomsday/hulk body type, in your first attemp you should try a superman/captain america body type, i´m not saiyan(got it?? XD) the first was bad, i just had a little desing mistake, wich was corrected with this one, maybe if you addapted the face of the first on this one it would be cool, anyway you did a great job and you´re an amazing artist, btw pleas take on count yugi and kaiba to future videos

Was going to say the same thing. Goku should be more acrobat, less bodybuilder. Another good example, in addition to the ones you mentioned, would be Spider-Man. He's meant to be nimble and quick, not bulky and steroidal. Some comic artists during the 1990s drew him big and bulky, and it did not look right.

YEEEESS! 10 times better than the 1st. The 2nd better captures the character as a whole, buff and insanely strong looking but compact enough to not make him look like the Hulk cosplaying as SSJ3 Goku. Amazing work.

I know you got bashed hard on the previous Goku, but the last one was the american comic style, your style. So dont feel bad about yourself by some comments But the way you portrayed Goku is abit more Toriyama style, not really your own. But I love your work, I love Goku in both style. I like the face and expression it embodies Gokus spirit much more. The fun and carefreeness while facing a strong enemy. That's what I see when looking in this Gokus face. What I expect and and what I know I will see when looking Goku in the face.

P.S hol' up guys wont it make sense if the primal/first saiyans would look like the first drawing? i mean their body would be comparable to those of a gorilla/ape since you know? they transform into one

Inaudibly- Screeching the first saiyan was bardock, goku’s father,. He traveled back in time some how when frieza destroyed the planet. There’s a movie that was made about it. The first saiyans should actually somewhat resemble goku due to this

It probaly look good with western style.The western style is pretty complex and with the right artist can look godlike.Jim lee for example.

Indeed, you do. But I think Guts could translate well to a Western style. I think he should, by all means, give it a good try if he wants to and we'll see how it turns out. I don't think anything could turn out as bad as Hulk-in-a-wig, though.

I really hate the David Finch style of rendering characters, but you cleaned a lot of that in photoshop and gave kind of a cell shading style in some sections, as well as softening his expression with the lighting, i'm a massive anime and Dragon Ball fan, and i aprove this one for sure. I'd liked a wilder/longer hair like the previous version though, that's the thing that makes this form special, the bad guy eyes is a close second and you were perfect on that one, kind of struggled to get that feel at first but you nailed it.

Yeah. The problem with the older Goku picture is that Goku isn't hulk-like at all. He's really buff, sure, but he's also fairly slim. He has an athletic body. +, Goku looks pretty young, and that face didn't fit him at all. He looked too old and weird. Now it's perfect, though

He uses multiple pens of different thickness and probably either refills the ink, gets new ink cartridges, or gets new pens. But still, each pen should have enough ink for quite a lot of drawing

Only thing I don't like about the new one is the face.. It looks too close to the original style.. This was an exercise in adapting the manga art style in a western/comic book design. The face here looks a bit too much like the original, and not like a western style. I think what most people hated about the first one was the body proportions/frame. This one is a lot more in line with how you would draw a Superman/Captain America-type character and it fits a lot more, but the face seems like you didn't want to make it western style which I feel is unfortunate. (Beyond that, I think the piece is great, I'm just worried it strays too far from the original challenge :) )

My only critique is the hair seems a bit afro esc his right arm muscle looks off to me and his smile is a bit iffy ssj3 is very stoic and stern and his hair could have had some more exagerated length it really looks like he just has a big ball behind him i find in drawing it looks Best Through some kind of angled view but i really enjoy his torso look but his legs are kind of weird to me like i said ssj3 is very imposing i feel a straight leg stance is good and he is usually always looking down on others a really good refrence point that looks like what youre going for is his dokkan batlle lr character art its my favorite goku drawing ever
