Trying to FIX a Faulty iPhone 5S that fell down the TOILET!!!

Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows an attempted repair on my nephew's Declan Apple iPhone 5S which unfortunately slid off the sink into the toilet. It was powered on and charged whilst wet so now it has failed completely and will no longer power on.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Your channel inspired me to never give up. I successfully changed a HDMI chip on my faulty LG LCD TV. The chip has about 100 pins. I tried the fix about a year ago without any luck. Only due to your videos I gave it another shot and last nicht I got it to work. You should have seen the smile on my face...it was one of those Vince moments when you are successfull after hours and hours of work. Thank You for your awesome work and the insipration! :)

My fav part of Vince's videos, is that it doesn't even matter to him if it is even worth the time to try fixing it, and sometimes it totally isn't. But he doesn't like to easily give up, and when he succeeds (and almost always does, at least to a point) He gets really stoked when he succeeds. He is in it to learn, share, and is beyond happy with what he does. This is what youtube is all about if ya ask me. :) thanks vince for all your enthusiastic helpful videos.

The reason some chips look matte black and others look like shiny pieces of silicon is exactly that: the matte black ones are in an epoxy package, whereas the ones that look like they're made of glass are bare passivated dice soldered directly onto the PCB. It's sometimes called a "chip-scale package".

That mirror finish on the ICs is due to what they are made from. Silicon crystals with an extremely high purity are cut into wafers and polished to a mirror finish sometimes for function and cooling. The flat black ICs are "packaged" in a ruff coating of epoxy for protection and when cooling is not an issue.

When it comes to water damage, there is probably a bad chip (or any other number of things). I recommend STS Telecom's videos here on RU-vid. That guy specializes in board level repairs and can get almost any number of iPhone problems working again. He has some tools that'll help diagnose problems like this that shouldn't be too expensive either. He may have a video or two that could help you get that iPhone working again or at least help you figure out what exactly is wrong.

This was educating. I did a 4S some years ago, one with broken screen one with no wifi IIRC and ended up with one working phone. Ive changed out a battery in hub's newer apple SE too and while it was a bit annoying , it did eventaully work and still does. Really though water seems like it is the killer for tiny electronics. I wonder if a silicagel bag would have worked better than their rice to dry it out.

This is really impressive since you don't have a software like ZXW to help you with schematics. You should invest in that type of software to help with your micro soldering. Re the battery - if they are "fully" discharged i.e. below 3V, most (not all) charging circuits will trickle charge them slowly until they are back above 3V then they should go into full charge mode. That's probably what happened with the old battery. You can see the same behaviour with a Poundland powerbank - when new the batteries are empty and you plug them in and nothing seems to be happening. After 5 mins or so the charging light comes on once the trickle charge phase has completed.

Hope that makes sense and i really do love your videos especially the longer ones. keep up the brialliant work

Thanks, I could look into it but I think when I tried it before it looked off because the camera is not directly above but at a slight angle. I can try again but I think it threw off the perspective or something :-)
