Trying to FIX: Screeching PSP 2000 ( PlayStation Portable )

Hi, in the video I attempt to repair a PSP 2000 sent over by Marcel from the Netherlands. The original fault was a swollen battery, but the PSP is also making a high pitched screeching/squealing noise. It makes it unplayable as it is very distracting.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Great job, Vince! That motor is called a stepper motor. That is why it would only give a certain amount if rotation depending on what contacts you powered with straight DC. It works with a stepper driver that allows it to control its position precisely. Oh, and the squealing coming from that motor was either a tiny speck of sand in it or insufficient lubrication or both, so good fix! An unrelated tip I remembered from way back when I used to refurbish cellphones (around when the 1st Motorola Razr came out): To remove dust, fingerprints and smudges from a naked LCD without scratching or leaving any residue, use the sticky side of cellotape. It works awesome and leaves NO traces.
@Lardzor
@Lardzor 4 года назад
I don't think that's a stepper motor. I think it's typical brushless motor without the electronics that control it. With a brushless motor, there are permanent magnets attached to the spinning rotor, and wire windings (that act as electromagnets) underneath the rotor that are attached to the mounting. Brushless motors use electronics to send power to the wire windings in sequenced that attract the permanent magnets on the rotor to spin it. I guess to save space, they put the electronics that control the motor somewhere else other than with the motor itself. A typical brushless motor, like a computer case fan, would have the electronics built into motor's housing. The reason the motor was only moving a little at a time is because you were only energizing one wire coil at a time instead of rapidly cycling through all the wire coils in sequence like the electronics would be doing.
@getyourkicksagain
@getyourkicksagain 4 года назад
@@Lardzor You're not wrong, as a BLDC works much in the same way, but a BLDC is designed to provide smooth, constant rotation and a stepper provides precise movement and repeatability. The CD spindle motor is a BLDC, but the sled motor has to be a stepper to locate the laser in the precise track on the CD.

@Lardzor
@Lardzor 4 года назад
@@getyourkicksagain What you say makes sense. To move the sled with accuracy, the motor would need to be a stepper motor. If it were just a brushless motor, it would need some form feedback to track the motor rotation like an encoder, or hall-effect sensor, and I can't see one. I was mainly looking at the structure of the motor, and not it's function. Also, I've tried moving the rotor of a stepper motor by hand, and they are very stiff and click-click-click in very small increments when you do force them to turn. It just looked so much like brushless motors I'm used to, and so very unlike stepper motors I'm used to. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZQZ5WKxwrNM.html

Got my PSP 3000 out for the first time in God knows how long recently, and it had this squealing noise! Not really one for opening things up myself, especially handhelds, but after watching your video and locating the issue, it turns out on the PSP 3000 if you open up the UMD gate there is a very small hole that leads to that motor! So I sprayed the end of a cotton bud in WD40 and just squeezed it off in that hole a couple of times and ran a UMD disk - and the squealing was gone! Thanks for the video Vince! long time viewer myself!

Okay so, I watched this video and thought there was no way I was taking apart my PSP, and assumed there was no hope whatsoever. About a week later, I got the idea to apply pressure (AKA push down) lightly on the motor from the inside of the UMD reader with my finger, and it got rid of the squeaking noise completely. I did it once and it got rid of the noise after the first start-up of the disc, and did that a second time and it got rid of the noise completely. I don't know if it's a temporary fix or if I just got lucky, but it seems it was the motor that causes this problem. The squeaking problem from what I remember happens pretty easily, as it only takes a bump while the disc is reading or doing something for this to happen. Greatly appreciate the video!

After my 3600mah battery failed I opened it up and the battery inside was only 860mah. I did find a 1000mah phone battery that fit in the PSP battery case and it's been working fine for the past 2 years. p.s. You can put custom firmware on the PSP. There are many different kinds of motors - this one is a stepper motor. Steppers have connections to the individual windings so any number of connections are possible. By energizing the windings in sequence precise control of speed and direction is possible. Try compressed air first then worse....lol

LOL a little distracted there @ 3:00. "move along, nothing to see here". A true pro how you carry on. You all realize he could have easily edited that out right?

I have one question, why after every attempt to fix, you put everything back together, apart from the fact that you put everything completely back knowing that you solved the problem ?

Easy to solve.. You don't need to replace the umd just install cfw and play all your isos from memory stick Pro duo.. And if umd continues with this strange noises just disconnect power and data flex cables or take umd reader out.. Easy because you can put all your games on a card you already have it.. Best regards from Portugal.like you channel

...or you can get a Memory Stick Pro Duo to microSD adaptor and shove in a bigger microSD card. Faster read-write speeds with access to larger data storage sizes for ISOs et cetera make that a handy purchase for a PSP

as i recall sometimes that type of screeching can be the lens going left and right.. its on like a wheel thing like most lasers and its just worn. Id imagine replacing the laser part would fix it. Or maybe try to oil it who knows maybe it will stop. But replacing is best bet. I thought it would be about screeching speakers bcz i got one like this but it seems its just the laser. sooo yeah. Idk if ill finish vid ill look around lol waaayy too much time to watch for a little repair.
