It might have come out after this comment was written, but in the Adventuring Party, Brennan revealed that he knew this was pretty much impossible and meant for the players to use one of their skips.

One word per second is kinda wild, but definitely balanced for both wackiness and in-game combat logistics, although in my experience, my mates and I have definitely written garbage 300 words with less time.

@@alfiekinnies You definitely haven't hand written that many words in less time. Typed, maybe, but it's not possible to handwrite that fast.

Could only do it if they handed me a small laptop. Which they'd give me in a student exam 'cause of the autism diagnosis! 89 wpm baby!!

@@Spiritoftherain You're definitely a faster typer than I - but you're also very right that typing it would be closer to doable. Handwritten? Heck no.

​@@catherineelmore2004It really feels that Brennan chose 300 words wanting it to be close to the clock and force them to probably use a academic resource (which he mentions kinda in the adventuring party afterwards), but my guess is he estimated using typing speeds and not handwriting speeds.

I was so impressed by Lou and Ally getting down to business on the math problem for that reason!

The math question is rushed but doable. You quickly advance the first train by 25 minutes to sync them up, and then it's a matter of converting (110 remaining miles) / (130 miles per hour) into minutes and seconds via long division. If they were math team kids they might've solved it in two minutes. Writing 300 words in 300 seconds is superhuman unless they're all writing at the same time, or unless they use a loophole like just writing the word "I" three-hundred times.

I love the idea, i don’t know if it would’ve worked though. Theoretically in the heat of battle its one paper that the whole thing had to written on. So the only way it could’ve worked narratively is if they tore up the paper into parts in game, and irl they just write on separate papers. So i don’t know if they had come up with this idea if they would have been able to argue for its sake like that in that short amount of time. Then practicality, the essay writers were getting attacked for each minute they worked on the paper, let’s be generous and say 1 attack (6 people 20 wpm is about 2 minutes 30 seconds so one attack is plausible) came at them. Thats 12 attacks to complete the essay and I’m assuming he’s actually using the monsters stats to attack fabian and Riz, so if like fig was getting attacked by the shrimp dragon i could see her getting low and possibly losing concentration on spirit guardians or something. All in all, its a cool idea but i think skipping was the best option Sorry id my rant was a little negative, your idea was really fun and creative that it got my brain working overtime and i like stress testing ideas and seeing how it could or could not work. But i know to others it can come off as that.

They're improv comedians so the content wasn't the issue. It's that they needed to type 1word a second to hit 300 words in 5 mins. And that doesn't count the timer starting before reading the question

@@TerrelSam I mean, the ability to write that much is the main challenge, but even for improv comedians, coming up with that much to say in such a short, time pressured situation it would still be hard to come up with something substantive and coherent (see Murph's full Fabian citation at the end!).

@@tylerquebedeaux1867 Regardless of the ability to come up with with the essay on the fly its pretty much impossible to physically write out 300 words in less than 5 mins. If they were to type it out sure, but writing takes longer.

@@TerrelSam Yes, that is what I said originally (from both a content creation and a mechanical perspective)... so, I am struggling to understand what you are complaining about.

'I' is the fastest word to write. You can write 300 I's in 5 minutes without trouble. I wouldn't count that as an essay, though!
