@@blablabla1000abledang community usually isn’t that negative. In fact I’ll push back, and say ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about climbing would know a gym in Japan would not be “easy” for beginners. But that has nothing to do with the fact that- there are ALWAYS routes that are climbable for beginners. Spread the love of climbing mate don’t be negative.
i mean the gym is definitely small but if you just want a spray wall this is a peak experience, almost every pro climber says spray walls make you the strongest and this gym looks like it would make you insanely strong if you only climbed here for 1-2 years
Magnus is going to become a creature of myth for this gym. Returning from across the sea every five years, to complete a project and then disappears again.
Him not recognizing the gym associate because he has a bit longer hair now explains why Magnus always thinks that changing his hair a bit is enough as a disguise - it would certainly work for himself
I think one of the reasons why it works is because it really is absurd to think The Superman was actually your friendly office worker all along. Even if they do look similar, that layer of doubt is massive.
the only way i think the Clark Kent thing could be super ridiculous, is if Lois herself didn't make the connection, i don't know the actual lore and when\how she knew, but it'd be absolutely RIDONCULOUS if it wasn't instantaneous, other people however, yeah, i can totally see them not recognizing him.
I usually wore contacts, and when I then wore glasses on random days, people didn't recognize me. Happened several times. Nowadays it's the reverse with contacts/glasses, and I still get the same thing!
Something incredibly wholesome about the notion that 5 years later you come back to the „worst rated gym in tokyo“ and can now call it the „best rated gym in tokyo“
Agreed. When he said "1 hour" at the entrance I thought "oh no, will be a short video" 😂 This said, I have no idea how a human being can in 1 hour, half of it speaking to the camera, go from warming up to a project V9... Magnus's metabolism is always dialed on 'full speed' or what ???
It’s crazy how different japanese culture is. The fact that the gym employee recognised Magnus and didn’t say anything despite clearly being happy about him coming is mind-blowing to me
idunno... i did the same. i met alex honnold a couple of times at the crag and i just said hi and pretended like he was any other person. i figured its probably annoying if everybody always recognizes you
Nah, this is true anywhere. I've climbed either at the gym or outside next to several pro climbers and you just don't make a big deal out of it. Plus, pro climbers these days flock to Japan, you can't go into a gym without stepping over at least one of them. Hell even Shawn Raboutou was here (Japan) a few weeks ago.
5:23 Hearing Magnus say "but I want to get into it more" is hilarious and ironic, it sounded exactly like my friends who have gone climbing 3 times in their life before and are having fun and "want to get into it more". there are levels to everything
I love the idea of the lowest grade having non-specific foot holds, it makes it that one step easier and more accessible, allowing a load more people to be able to give it a go.
Typically for those gyms the first couple of grades are "any feet" and then when you get to a certain level it's the taped holds only. That's how it was at Noah Climbing in Kyoto and Quail looks exactly like it with the tape system.
With the world changing so fast, there's something deeply comforting about a gym (or any favourite place for that matter) remaining the same as when you left them last. It's like coming back home to see the folks, or to find your favourite pub still standing.
The OG video is one of my comfort videos on all of RU-vid. The vibes of just Tokyo, its raining, the cozy gym size, the editing. Truly an unmatched video inn my book. And the pt 2. with the same guy is just as good. Thanks so much man. Love the content.
@@Ryukushinn Just his apathetic, emotionless attitude towards people he clearly knows and interacts with. Like he can't be bothered to act like a normal, polite human.
I just rewatched the original vid yesterday, its my favorite video from your channel, and this sequel its equally good. Im so happy that you keep doing this type of video, the chill vibe is unmatched.
You did it Magnus, I'm gonna climb tomorrow with friends of mine for the first time! I like your chill attitude and your passion for the sport you convinced me I at least had to try it! Cheers from Quebec!
@@dirtfrosting Sorta, but they did set quality routes for long enough that if someone like Magnus showed up then they could benefit from it. Sure it's luck to an extent but they put in the work for long enough that luck found its way to them. At least that's how I see it. Cuz alternatively they could've just genuinely been a bad gym and perhaps Magnus has a much worse impression on them which doesn't get them any additional recognition.
@@dirtfrosting Ya I'm aware of that. But you don't understand what I mean, I'm saying that it blew up because it exceeded his expectations as the "worst climbing gym" meaning the setting was actually really good in of itself. That's my overall point, is that despite the ratings, the gym kept setting good routes which made it so that when Magnus showed up they capitalized off that luck instead of falling short. They put in the work and when luck met hard work that's how you have success.
That gym associate is such a good dude. So humble, so kind, so patient and wise. Thanks for taking time in your videos to highlight the good ones you meet along the way :) And how awesome to see you tear up a project route, great vibes from this video Magnus!
You can feel the warmth and coziness of this video. I wonder if the guy behind the counter was just trying to be respectful and not overreacting when seeing Magnus again or if he genuinely didn't recognize him. The latter feels like a longshot!
I love the climbing community so much. Magnus was my first impression on the sport and lemme tell you it was and still is such a good one. He is always so humble and connected to the whole community, and so fun to watch :)
The most impressive move in this whole video for me is at 10:59 - getting your foot up that high across body at chest height is insane and super cool to watch. The rest of the climb, the hip sinking is so effortless. Love the Japanese culture, people are so friendly and polite.
This video, accidentally or not, had so much texture and story, and feeling. I feel as if I was invited into a vignette of your life Magnus. And I too am growing older with you, I remember watching the original when you posted it. Hope you’re well. Also my French father in law has the exact same manner of speaking with strangers or folks he thinks he may know…must be a European thing lol
Return to this gym in 5 years please. This was such a relaxing and lowkey funny video with the same guys being there 5 years later and the gym that hasn’t changed a tiny bit, love it!
This was great to watch! There's nothing quite like the little friendships we make with people around the world. I'm glad you got to reconnect with these guys :)
That last video from this gym was the first Magnus video i saw and eventually this channel motivated me to try climbing, its so satisfying to see him come back there. As always, amazing video Magnus!
As OG subs we remember the first vid you did here but can't believe it's been 5 years!! We're so glad you're posting climbing more regularly on this channel 👏🏼
The original Japan video was the second video I’ve ever watched on this channel. It’s crazy I’ve been now watching you for 5 years almost. Thanks for all the continuous content and keeping us entertained. You’re one of the best online personalities we have today!
I don't know how long i'm subscribed to your channel, but its at least 5 years and i feel like this is the best video ever on your channel. Thank you, for taking us back in time, that was magical!
@@jamesdurett5913 idk haha none of my business I guess 🤷♀️ he's not said anything other than mentioning her at the end of this video so I assume it's the same
Attempting to beat your younger self at something will surely be the best, most effective type motivation! It was great that the both of you and the others that were in the picture from years ago, in the end were all able to acknowledge each other - that looked like it must have been a nice, feel good moment for all of you!
Really cool to see a video in somehow your "old style" with almost pure bouldering content, love it! And I think you are still strong as hell. I really like to watch you climbing and also teach you others how to climb. Watching your videos for around a year now I think as a climber myself learend some things from your videos over the time. Doing a multi pitch climbing course in Arco a few days before I heard your voice in my head while climbing saying "you want your hips as close to the wall as possible" or "trust our feet". Thank you so much for your great, entertaining but also really educational content!
What’s up Magnus! Long time viewer, first time commenter. I remember watching the old video years ago. So nostalgic seeing you go back! I remember you saying in one of your old vids that you hope these videos help motivate others to train hard. Whenever I’m feeling lazy and I should be training I’ll throw on a Magnus vid and I’ll get the motivation to make it happen. Thanks for all the effort it takes to make these brother! 👊
@@ominousplatypus380 yeah literally, everyone is saying oh haha magnus didnt recognize him. of course he didnt, the guy looks 10 years younger than he did 5 years ago :O
Hi Magnus! The years fly by! I would love to ask for a video doing gym workouts + their climbing application. It’s one thing to look at it online, but between yourself and the guests on your channel, it feels like some of the ‘secrets’ are missed out on.
I'm assuming they've broken up a while ago, but so is life. Edit: just saw the end and the way he said he's "not here with his girlfriend" is definitely a bit ambiguous. Though I'm guessing he would have said Marte if they were still dating
i love the idea that the gym guy got this different hairstyle in the hope that magnus shows up someday and does not recognize him! xD no, i think he would have welcomed him right away if magnus spoke japanese. he might be nervous speaking english.
I'm not a climber but have been watching your channel a very long time. Almost since you started I feel. Seeing you attend this climbing gym with your mrs the first time I have probably watched that episode a few times over the years. As I have travelled throughout Asia more so for food and to go to places without the reputations that most people seek and have very rarely not had my mind blown with hospitality and the overall experience. Keep going legend. Love what you do and I hope your content inspires everyone as much as it does me.
@@Zeemac No idea actually. After the Alex Honnold reaction video you never really see her again. Never saw anything saying they split so I assume they're still going?
It's been quite a while since we've seen her on the channel, do we know if anything happened to them? Or are they still together and she just doesn't appear on his vids any more?
@@JaimePonsPK He still referred to her as "my girlfriend" & I doubt he would have put her in the flashback if they weren't together anymore. Maybe she just doesn't want to be in the videos these days
@@boogaloo4640 I see, sorry, when I posted the comment I hadn't finished the video yet, thanks! It's totally cool, I wad just doing some harmless gossiping because they seemed good together back then and I was just curious.
Magnus you have been such a big inspiration for me, even when I was climbing v4 and now when I’ve just sent my first v8 today thank you so much for the big inspiration.
