California has allowed self-driving cars since 2019 and has repeatedly asked Tesla to join California’s self-driving car regulatory regime, but Tesla has repeatedly refused to do so. There’s nothing particularly onerous about being permitted to operate self-driving cars in California. Many other companies operate such cars in California. The main issue is that you must publicly report all disengagements and accidents.

Great vid as always, however I'm not sure what you said at 7:56 is true. Waymos aren't designed to operate in this way, so I feel as though the idea that you could "plop it down" and let it "try its best" is a little misguided. As I'm sure you're aware the fundamentals of Waymo's approach are markedly different to that of FSD; they perform SLAM to pre-made maps as opposed to using perception to build a map at runtime. This map includes everything from lane markings to traffic control to even the turning trajectory for each corner. Without these "hints" a Waymo would have very limited capacity to zero-shot a new environment, as their approach means they practically never need to (both a good and bad thing ofc). From what I've seen Waymo seems very impressive, but considering a Waymo van has never been to the country I live in, let alone my suburb, I think it's important to appreciate the nuances that distinguish their approach to Tesla's. edit: tesla isn't actually building a map from vision anymore, they're doing something even better - end-to-end policies. I could go on forever why I believe this is better but nobody asked :)
@rigeborod
@rigeborod День назад
Yep, the main idea about Waymo system is to have high definition 3D scans which can be "substracted" from lidar data to pick up differences which are essentially other actors in the traffic. So I also think they cannot operate at all in the areas which were not 3D scanned.
@Xanthopteryx
@Xanthopteryx День назад
Tesla also have highly detailed maps and will work much worse without them. Waymo uses the maps as guidance, but even if a roadwork appear, it will still work.
@catbert7
@catbert7 День назад
@@Xanthopteryx You're not understanding the difference in detail. Tesla basically uses Google Maps, like the rest of us, just to know how to navigate the road network. THat is very different than Waymo's lidar-mapping, which provides a granular 3-d representation of everything on and around the road, along with, as OP said, rules of the road (aka doesn't need to read signs), turning trajectories, etc. Basically, Tesla FSD works with about the same info we humans do, if we were driving in a new enviroment - working off what we see. Waymo has been pre-taught every detail about the areas it drives in, as if it's been driving there for so long it could do it with eyes closed.
@Nahte001
@Nahte001 День назад
@catbert7 It's a little more nuanced than this, made even more so with the V12 redesign. At the 2022 AI day they showcased a system they were developing that would aggregate data from different trips along the same road to automatically refine an HD map, however I haven't heard anything to this end since then. Considering their move away from map-based control I expect that this has been abandoned, or at the very least put away until ~V14+, at which point it may look less like an HD map and more like a neural memory bank (tesla ai team write that down). Either way, @Xanthopteryx is still way off the mark with their claim that Teslas would drive "much worse" without a map, I'm not sure what made them so confident in making such a false assertion.
@SyntheticSpy

Two different approaches, but the major difference is the scale. It could be argued that FSD is behind in overall smoothness at this point, however look at the cost and hardware to achieve robotaxi from the company with arguably the most map and road data. It's a race at this point to see if Waymo can reduce the cost and scale mapping faster than Tesla can bring FSD to level 5 autonomy. Tesla has achieved scale already with their cars and FSD. Tesla also has the distinct advantage of selling their robotaxi solution to the end consumer which Waymo does not.
@bear4278
@bear4278 День назад
I think it will be an interesting fight! Personally, my bet is Waymo wins the race. I don’t think the cost of the Waymo’s is a big issue because: a) the sensors get cheaper every day and buying them in bulk for mass production would make that even cheaper, and b) it just makes sense to have redundant systems in my mind. I would not be surprised if having them actually saves them money in the future compared to a vision only system because it will reduce the number of wrongful death payouts and the resulting time off the road for the fleet that would inevitably come after each fatal crash etc. As for data and scale, Tesla definitely do have the advantage there, but that may not be of any help if regulators deem that completely autonomous, vision only systems are too risky for use by the general public. All that said, I completely agree with you about them not selling them to the end user. Maybe Waymo are jest getting the trials out of the way first before making any plans to put them in customer hands but if not, Tesla might loose the fight, but they will likely win the war.
@turkishhusla
@turkishhusla День назад
@@bear4278 Some very good points, particularly around regulators and non redundant systems, however I think regulators might focus on miles per intervention as a general metric and not scrutinize how that metric is achieved. Waymo is a bit of a black box in how many interventions are occurring by tele operation. Waymo also doesn't make any vehicles so their approach will remain difficult to scale and integrate as their fleet will likely require several different vehicle types.
@Xanthopteryx

Well, think of it like this: Waymo have no driver. Tesla have. Tesla just do not work. You can not compare the two. Teslas operating area is zero square meter. Zero.
@catbert7
@catbert7 День назад
Unless Waymo becomes an auto and lidar manufacturer, there is no chance of them getting close to cost parity with Tesla. Even if they did those things (which they absolutely won't), it would still be cameras vs lidar + cameras + radar and good luck meeting Tesla on cost-efficient production. So, cost parity is out of the question. Scaling is also never going to be fast for Waymo, so their only real hope is that Tesla's solution never works well enough to be a robotaxi... which would basically require it to stop improving now, or possibly even months into the past, since FSD is already good enough in some places. So, I don't think there's any realistic analysis where Waymo wins. But I am glad they helped pave the way. A lot of people came to trust robotaxis due to Waymo. Hopefully Tesla will maintain that trust.

Waymo has not publicly disclosed the exact cost per vehicle for its autonomous cars, but estimates suggest that the integration of its advanced sensor suite-such as cameras, lidar, and radar-adds tens of thousands of dollars to a vehicle's base cost. For example, earlier versions of Waymo's autonomous vehicles cost around $300,000 to $400,000, largely due to the expensive technology involved, although costs have been steadily decreasing with the introduction of newer generations. The 6th-generation Waymo Driver system, launched recently, has been optimized for cost efficiency by reducing the number of sensors without compromising safety. Remote operator only intervene when the car asks for it. And they can not control the car. The car might ask "Should i go left or right or reverse for this obstacle?" and they can say "Go left". But. Is this actually the case or am I not watching enough? Because if this is the case and they just recently are getting their new computer up to scale and finishing up other FSD needs, it seems like soon they’ll be solely focused on improving edge cases with a way better supercomputer, which would then quite quickly start getting better at all edge cases it’s currently not the best at and could become legal by next year in Texas and California as they hope for. And then once more cars are autonomous for much more time it’ll quickly improve even more. Then cybercab should be able to scale quite well the following few years.

So... they figured out how to follow virtual tracks in a closed off city with a virtual driver vehind the wheel to nuge the vehicle every time it makes a mistake? Scalability of such a system is basically null, they are just lucky that unlike Tesla their buisness model does not actually require the car to understand how to drive and understand it's environment. Just follow the virtual rail and query the operator every intersection or so every time it has issues. Waymo figured a compromise they seem happy with for now. But they have not solved self driving and with the limitations it the techology they chose, they never will. But again appart form their marketing, who keeps saying they will, they do not have millions of vehicles across the planet that need to have this capability. True, the Waymo when driverless is geofenced, and it doesn't do highways. If comparing level 2 systems, and there was a Waymo level 2 system available, then the Waymo would not need to be geofenced and just like the Tesla, it would do any roads and highways. Comparing Waymo with FSD level 2 is comparing apple and pears. If you want to compare Tesla fully automation with Waymo then compare the Waymo trip featured here with the Tesla Robo Taxi event where after ten years, Tesla's autonomous driving was limited to a 20-30 acre geofenced 5mph ride on a pre-programmed, pre-mapped and heavily rehearsed route with no traffic and no pedestrians. That would be the fairer comparison. The ability for Waymo to be remotely assisted isn't a flaw it is part of the complete fully autonomous solution from a company that doesn't claim to have resolved all the problems and that respects the challenges that it faces and is working steadily towards the need for less and less human assistance and expanding its horizons. Waymo works with first responders, to avoid areas and to allow first responders to take control. The reason that Waymo is only just now testing highway driving is because the highway driving although technically less challenging (single carriage, no pedestrians, no traffic lights and no sharp corners), the speed the vehicle needs to travel at means that an incident may require split second evasive manoeuvres and that stopping a vehicle on a highway could in itself cause a problem. Fully autonomous highway driving creates a completely different set of challenges. When Tesla's FSD disengages there is a driver ready to take over (or should be), in a Waymo, disengaging is not an option. It is claimed that FSD only uses the sensor that human drivers use, i.e. vision. But human drivers for the majority of time are driving along familiar routes, so they more often than not use mapping. They also are aware of weather conditions, wind speeds and temperature. Human drivers do, or at least should be, using far more than just their vision when driving.
