Before making this video I watched a few other peoples review videos on what to expect. After just a few minutes the smell no longer bothered me after I got used to it. I think the taste test would have been way worse if I wasted no time and did it immediately. Most people will open its underwater to avoid the spray, the reason I didn't is because it's the world's stinkiest fish after all and I wanted to smell exactly how bad it was. It was the most fishy smell I have ever smelled mixed with a big fart. Thanks for watching
✓ No fake overreactions ✓ Genuine thoughts ✓ Straight to the point ✓ No clickbait ✓ No bullcrap ✓ No stupid music This channel deserves more attention, keep up the videos you legend! Greetings from Croatia!
His description is right on. The smell is absolutely disgusting and will make you puke but the taste doesn’t match the smell. The texture is slimy and disgusting.
Hi from Sweden! 🇸🇪 I ❤️ youre channel and I ❤️ surströmming! Youre supposed to open the can in an bucket of water to avoid get sprayed 🫢 youre also supposed to eat it with some bread, potato, fresh vegetables etc. You can buy surströmming first in august because the cans have finished fermentet the seasons fish by then, but if youre hardcore you can save the last years can (it get all swelled up like yours) 💪🏼 🎉 please come visit Sweden some time and we will throw a surströmming party for you! 🎊 🐟 🎉
The fact that you actually put it in your mouth to taste it makes you one of my greatest RU-vidrs of all time, not only in terms of sheer bravery but also the rarity of content. Love your channel!
As a Swede (Thats where Surströmming comes from). You actually have to notify ur neighbors before u eat it. Ur also supposed to keep it refrigerated even in its canned state and open it underwater. It is used as a single ingredient in a dish. The most popular way to eat it is with potatoes and some other stuff on midsummer. It actually tastes good if it is consumed propperly aka with lots of potatoes relative to a small bit of surstömming.
Love the sudden pause and pissed off look you give the can at 4:20 as it fizzes! Never seen someone so (rightfully) mad at a can before. Sorry you got sprayed but it's another great video. "Carbonated fish"👍🐟
This was a most epic opening, " That fish's tail is moving, and straightening out", "the fish is bubbling underneath the skin" gosh, I hope the sight of this doesn't end up in my dreams, you sir are one of the bravest gents I have ever seen in my life, lol, 🤣😂😅
Dude i eat that on a regular base, you are suposed to open it under Water in a bowle! this will contain the stink!! It tastes very good on Bread with good butter and garlic! Greetings from Germany :-p
I live overseas, in Sweden where the surströmming comes from. When I was a child my mother loved to eat it, the traditional northern swedish way. Every time she ate it I got angry, I hated the smell!! Most fermented foods smell awful but they're good for you!
@Anna Svensson Hej Anna! I know when I was over visiting Sweden back in the mid 90s they would serve this for breakfast in Norway and Sweden! Really enjoyed my visit, even the military guards at the Royal Summer Palace were so friendly, they were talking to me through the gate! Might have helped that I was visiting in March, only time I could get a vacation from my work.
@@watershed44 I wasn' there but I find it unlikely that it was surströmming you were served for breakfast. People don't eat that for breakfast, not even those norwegians. It's much more likely that it was pickled herring (inlagd sill), which is a whole other...kettle of fish. Surströmming is eaten at a special celebration towards the end of summer, a so called Surströmmingsskiva. You eat it on hard bread with sliced boiled potatos, chopped onion or chives, caviar and sour cream. And you drink lots of snaps and sing snaps songs.
I am not sure what was more entertaining in this video. post's reaction to the spray/smell, the fact that the cat wanted NOTHING to do with fish or the fact that the crows were even cautious to get near the fish. No matter the choice, I would say that it is a quite entertaining video. Thank you for sharing!
Poor Post, after watching so many videos of this in the past, I knew what he was in for once he popped it open. Another guy did it in his car and screamed and gagged from the smell as it went everywhere lmao. 😂 This was another good one. It was like the smell revolted the cat and then reminded him he had to take a dump lol 😂
This would make one hell of a prank to open a can near the intake to an air handler be it in the middle of summer or winter and stink up someone's place or business real good for a short time lol. Fun fact surstromming is banned by airlines and cruise lines for that reason.
I ran a power plant overhaul in Sacramento, Ca, years ago. 2 dumb ass young brothers from Colorado were on my crew. They were always causing troubles. At the end of the job near Christmas, they went to other workers and borrowed $100 each and never paid the other guys back. The younger one had a can of kippered herring where the key broke off and wouldn't open. He threw it into our tool shed where it punctured. A few days later I took that can and jammed it up over the steering column among the wires in their old Nissan truck the day before they left to drive back to Colorado. One of the other guys on the crew called me 2 weeks later to report that in the cold and snow crossing the continental divide, the brothers were so fed up with the stench that they got into a fist fight at the side of the highway. Each blamed each other for dirty socks, clothes, rotting underwear, etc. They drove in below zero weather with the windows down. The guy who called wanted to know if there was some way to get his $100 back as the brothers stiffed everyone. We got a big laugh, and I told him to tell the brothers that I put the rotten can in there.
@@kimmer6 Lol nice, I can think of worse things like doing the same with some hamburger meat then there is the age old "liquid ass" spray that works so well.
I was just thinking about you this morning, yesterday I rolled a spliff and put it in a MRE condiments packet to tease my viewers and one guy said back in the day they put smokes and matches in the MRE's and the soldiers that didn't smoke bartered with them.Thought that was pretty cool and figured you have probably ran across those at some point. Thanks for another great video 🌞
That is a fact about the smoke's, my dad had a bunch of MRE's from back in the day, they used to have little two packs of cigs in them in little cardboard boxes...*That's all just wanted to tell you it wasn't a myth..💯
You should open the can in a bucket of water. Then it will not spray all the room. But it is only a rookie misstake, you will never open it wrong again. I have not eaten Surströmming in my whole life, but my dad used to do that sometimes. He opened the cans outside.
I enjoyed the video in it's entirety (of course! I never expected you would try this, I love how mostly not bothered you were 😄), but that very end "say no to crack" had me howling for some reason hahaha. Love your videos man!
My first reaction was to lean back away from the computer screen when you opened the can lol 😂 It looks like that can was designed to allow for bulging, I think it's normal to do that. Great video, thanks
I wanted him to put that can in a plastic clear bag so bad and puncture it through the bag so it would stay contained. I'm telling my computer "Put it in a bag!" lol

" Say, what's for dinner?" "Fish that smells like ass." "Oh boy." I can't stop laughing man !!!
The comparison to "Liquid A.." is spot on 😂👍 Big respect to you for manning up and taking a bite of the not-quite-dead nasty zombie fish !! I failed trying and nearly puked ;-)
"I'll leave a link in the description in case you want to buy it!" two minutes later "OH MY IT'S ALL OVER THE ROOM!!!!". Dude, I don't think you'll get too many affiliate purchases on this one. That's some NASTY looking fish, and I give you respect for showing us some new, albeit gross food.
@@NewEnglandWildlifeAndMore You might have to toss that shirt and anything else absorbent that the death juice got on, 'cause you probably won't be able to get the stench out. Ashens once explained that he had a friend who popped a can of surstromming indoors. The juice got on his clothes and the carpet. Both had to be replaced. Then again, that might have been just that instance. There was also a guy in Germany (I think) who got evicted after opening a can in an apartment stairwell.
It's a conservation method that's been done for ages in many cultures because they didn't had refrigerators so they salted, smoked, dried or even let it fermented.
It's a huge delicacy in Sweden where my X partner was from its fermented herring hence the bubbling & bulging can look up some other videos of people eating it they are all funny! 🤣🤣
"Each bulging can of surströmming is held underwater in a bucket when it’s opened to ensure any spray is captured by the water. The aroma of the fish can be instantly discerned when the bubbles released from the can reach the surface of the water. For this reason, some people open the can away from the eating area."
Lol oh man. As you mentioned, it's usually opened underwater, both to avoid the spray and to avoid the smell. If that option is not available, it is instead opened with a paper towel covering the puncture to capture the spray. In that case, it is opened outside to avoid the smell, which as you mentioned, is not unpleasant after some exposure to it and in open spaces is actually not bad. For those who love fish it is quite pleasant, actually. It is also properly prepared, fileted and in most cases the bones are removed as much as possible; the remainder are simply eaten since they're soft. They are not big enough to cause a problem, though the ones which are big enough to cause a problem are, obviously, spit out or ideally removed. I don't think I'd eat it by itself. It is overwhelming. It's meant to be accompanied with accoutrements. Onions, chives, garlic, sour cream, potatoes, and vodka. You place a small piece atop a piece of bread with onions, garlic, sour cream, and eat it all in one go. The slices of bread are small, probably half of an American slide of bread, or even a quarter. Eat, drink, and be merry with it.
"It doesn't smell bad it smells like this" (pulls out a bottle of Liquid Ass, the most disgusting smelling thing ever. I know as someone sprayed it in my local pub and nearly everyone fled the building) :D
As far as I know, most people that eat this regularly, in countries where is is considered a delicacy, do actually do something with it as opposed to eat it directly from the can. I dont think they cook it exactly, but I remember watching a video about 10 years ago where it was being eaten at a family gathering and they did something with it, ate it on crackers or something and maybe with a dab of sauce IIRC. they also opened it outside and in the far back corner of the yard away from everyone else. XD
People normally eat a small amount with a chunk of potato or put some sour cream on flat bread and place a small amount on that. Its like a seasoning more than a main course I think
I have to tell you, this was rough watching this at 6am! 😂😂. I felt so bad for you getting this stuff all over you after opening it,,,,I loved when you said the fish are coming alive! I give you so much credit for even tasting it, ugh.
This is a fish I love a lot. I grow up in a place in Sweden that then had three salterys that produces it. I don't know if all three are there today but you made me hungry!
HAHA that geyser of spray from the can was absolutely epic! Twenty starving cats would run from that nasty plate of bubbling slime. Always an adventure watching your videos
Where I live, we have what we call "Turkey Buzzards", better known as vaulters. Not sure if you have them in your area, but would have thought they would've found that stinky fish in a quick minute. Also, didn't know that crows are/or can be scavengers... learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing.
This is why the Swedes usually open it under water. Doing it under water in a sink or in a bucket reduces both the stink & spraying. However for "youtube likes" it's better to do it your way. LOL !
Nice Video again, in Sweden this is a delicacy and it can be very good. Theres a Video on RU-vid the first one if you search "How to eat Surströmming" i would like to see you tryin it out after you saw the traditional way and taste it. Would be a very nice Part 2 of you as long as you interested :D
"UGGHHH It's still spraying!" 😂 Dude, your videos popped up on my recommended...don't understand why, but I'm glad they did! I've only watched a few so far but thanks for the entertaining content from MN. I appreciate how genuine you are, don't change a thing 👌
I've seen pretty much all you have posted, and man, this was the funniest thing I have seen you post yet. Carbonated fish? OMG! Even the cat wanted nothing to do with it.
