Thank you, everyone, for your patience. I'm happy I managed to do this video. Since these visual novels deal with some let's say "challenging" themes, just a reminder to please always remember that I encourage a tolerant space here that allows intelligent discussion. As usual, I have packed a lot of info into this video - please be sure to check all relevant sections if you wish to discuss a topic in the comments. Thanks! CORRECTION: Please note that there is an error (my bad) at the beginning (time stamp 01:30): There never was a PS2 release of Tsukihime in Japan. Hat tip to @CYBERPSYCHOPATH for spotting this. Links for 3 good reviews are listed in the video's Description.
I think your community is genuinely just so lovely that you don't have to worry about debates becoming heated, haha. Which is such a refreshing thing. In some ways, it's a boon you're not a million subscriber channel. I feel like I'm sitting down for tea with you every time you upload. 💜
Thank you, glad you feel like you can relax here. 🤗 I am blessed with a fantastic community. I do a fair amount of behind-the-scenes work to keep this a toxic-free zone, to the extent that RU-vid makes it possible.
Don't worry, i think most of us are pretty chill here. I enjoy it when you talk about things you enjoy. And yes, Tsukihime is a pretty heavy story with very heavy themes, but even the subreddit is pretty chill actually. They were all super nice when i asked some stuff on the subreddit. Mainly how to play the OG Tsukihime and the extra stuff when I'm ready. I hope you keep making nice and chill videos for as long as you want to. I really enjoy listening to you and you are sort of my role model. I want to have a nice flat with lots of merch when I get to your age too. And have a chill life. Have a wonderful rest sunday Britta.
Garden of Sinners (the anime) was my official introduction to TYPE-MOON, and I've been having a blast with all of the series so far. I'm an addict when it comes to video game lore and world-building, and TYPE-MOON is just so good at building up their universe.
You're the second person to mention starting with The Garden of Sinners. I haven't looked much into that yet, but will do so (although the anime is now difficult to get hold of for me). The nasuverse truly is a universe.
@@Food4Dogs I actually became such a big fan of the Garden of Sinners anime series (my introduction to the Nasuverse however was the 2004 Fate anime) that I ended up buying the blu-ray collection of the movie series. I can definitely recommend that!
@@shoobydoobydoooo Yea ... I'd love to be able to do that, but unfortunately Blu-rays from other regions can't be played by our equipment in NZ. There's no legal conversion available as there is for DVD equipment.😑
I'd liek to chime in that I also somewhat got into the Nasuverse/TYPE-MOON stuff via Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai) anime movies, they're very, very good, made a massive lasting impression on me.
What a blast from the past. When I read the original Tsukihime VN I was still in junior high. Even though the original is very old school and quite dated by today's standards, it still holds a special place in my heart. It had an enchanting quality to it. I couldn't tear myself away from the screen.
Wow! I didn't realize this had such a long history. I just picked up A Piece of Blue Glass Moon for my daughter. I might borrow it myself and check it out. BTW, love your plushies....Nahobino looking over your shoulder. I actually have the black kaddis mabari.
That brings back some memories. I found the Tsukihime DVD's when I was in the military and picked them up. Liked them, but they were nothing great. Then a guy in my squadron who was REALLY into visual novels told me the VN was much better and sent me a fan translation of it. Needless to say, the anime made more sense after the VN. Now that Type Moon is redoing their older works I need to actually get them and start running through them again. Did Tsukihime almost twenty years ago, and over a decade for Fate. But, that'll have to wait until I finish going through the Muv Luv series. And for the record, Arcueid = best girl. I still laugh about the packing tape scene.
9:46 "now, the anime is generally considered to be... Bad." I spit out my drink and laughed out loud at this! That was an incredible delivery 😂 I was excited to see your thoughts on this! Thanks for covering it. I was floored by the opening scene as well, which almost brought me to tears. The music while talking with Aoko is so perfect for that scene. I'm a Fate fan (i studiously decided to start with the studio Deen adaptation, before watching UBW and Zero, and finally watching a playthrough of the VN). I've been keep myself from spoiling Tsukihime until the VN finally came out so i can get an authentic experience. And now im reading through it! When the Fate VN comes out, I'm exicted to finally play one of my favorite games for the first time 😅
One good thing I can say of the anime is that the soundtrack is excellent. The old pc version allowed you to switch out the songs, so I tried out the anime soundtrack with the later routes and it made for a great experience. On another note , it's important to note that Tsukihime's English translation is noticeably higher quality than the one in Mahoyo. So part of the difference in quality that you noticed might be due to that.
Thanks for the note about the translation. Someone on Twitter also pointed out the same issue to me. As an ex-translator myself, I know only too well how much impact a sub-standard translation can have.
I'm so happy to see this became a video! Tsukihime was my introduction to TYPE-MOON. I have fond memories of playing a fan translation when I was in high school. Now, 15 years later, I am a huge fan of the Nasuverse and I can play Tsukihime again. I got the Switch version because I love playing my visual novels in hand-held mode. I'll be diving in once I finish Mahoyo!
After a quick look, the text size for Tsukihime seems to be the same as in Mahoyo. It's not terribly small, but I think it could be a bit bigger. I also wish the text had more drop-shadow or a darker black outline around the letters. It can be difficult to read on lighter backgrounds sometimes, like white walls or overcast skies.
@@GrapeKioshi Ah yes - those sound like typical problems when porting to a smaller screen size, alas. Thanks for checking! I fear the Vita screen will prove too small ...
@@GrapeKioshi this was my main issue last year when reading mahoyo on my 20in TV, alot of the text was indiscernible from the background at times, idk why they don't have more text variety options.
From Japan. I couldn't understand it because it was in English, but I was surprised that it even explained the history of TYPE-MOON. I don't know when the other side of the moon will come out, but I hope it comes out soon.
Hi, Britta!! I actually (impulsively) pre-ordered the limited edition of this game (for Switch) without really knowing much about it, so i was very excited to see that it was the subject of this video! Thank you so much for sharing about the game’s background and your experience with it and its related media-I feel even more excited to play it now! 🤩
Britta, i love your passion for Tsukihime. I previously thought you were mostly into jrpgs, but i am always happy to be proven wrong. Still love watching your videos when you get a new special edition.
Yes, JRPGs are my primary love. But if you look back through my 5+ years of videos, you can see there's also a heavy emphasis on VNs. Plus I really like all sorts of games - I do a fair number of indie adventure/puzzle games, metroidvanias and many others. I'm actually also into classic and Western RPGs but just don't get around to covering them.
Fantastic breakdown. What I love about the limited edition boxes is that they are like old PC game boxes. I liked the story you shared about you and PoodlePa watching the anime. You might really like the manga by Sasaki Shonen, it was actually a really good adaptation. I do hope we get an UFOtable adaptation of the anime. I love Arcueid's new design.
Tsukihime is one of the best VN of all time and everyone should give it a try. As you can see, i'm a Satsuki fan. I was so excited when i watched the red garden teaser. That very day i wasnt able to do anything but to be happy and remember all these years waiting. Thank you for this video and sharing your opinion.
Not deep yet, really. If you go back to my FATE video, you'll see. It's really mainly a time issue. I can watch hours and hours of Fate anime ... or make some videos!😄
@@axon5391 it's a great idea - but I don't actually make videos about anime as such, because of the problems with footage. But I will obviously try and cover the remake of the Fate stay/night VN.
It's so surreal this, Witch on the Holy Night, and Fate/Stay Night are officially releasing in English. Amazing time to be a western type moon fan and I hope this motivates our beloved mushroom writer
It's interesting to see more Tsukihime proper. I know all these characters, but only from the perspective of the fighting game Melty Blood. It's cool to hear that Aoko is a significant character in something, I think she's the coolest character in the fighting games.
Wow, both of these VNs look like real works of art! And the snippets of music you've got playing throughout the video are so lovely. I've never interacted with anything TYPE-MOON related before, but only because I hadn't gotten around to it yet, I suppose. However, this makes me want to put Tsukihime higher up on the priority list. It seems like a good place to start with the nasu-verse. Thanks so much for sharing! 🌟
thank you for the reviews :D i always admire how passionate you are about what you do! i have been having quite a hard time these days but watching your videos always cheer me up
I often can't find the time or energy for your videos, but let that NOT be a statement on how happy it makes me to see them when they do appear. I'm sure you've experienced what it's like to cultivate a community around your content, but I also hope you know that even folks like me who've thus far only had the time for a passing glance appreciate seeing something we love discussed like this greatly🧡👍
Tsukihime was my introduction to the nasuverse and i really love it! I thought I would be fine without getting the limited physical edition but now I am greatly regretting it 😅 I might just buy it again to be honest
My copy was also delivered a few days ago. Fortunately, the print run seems to be larger than that of Witch on the Holy Night, which I only received as a Japanese import and therefore couldn't read the texts in the artbook. A remaster of Fate/stay Night is also due to be released this year and can already be ordered from PlayAsia. The quality of the packaging is really a nice surprise, which was also the case with Witch on the Holy Night. This should be standard. I've never understood why you have to pay so much money for a Collectors Editon and then you get a cardboard box that is sometimes thinner than a shoe box.
Loved this!!!!! Also, I liked the anime and read the visual novel (a long long time ago). I’m really looking forward to reading the remake of tsukihime one day, when I have more time.
Amazing video Britta, I’m a big fan of type moon and really enjoyed the way you explained everything and talk about the games it’s really calming and enjoyable to listen to as well as almost poetic at times. I also love your openness to experiencing new stories. Hope you have a good summer 💕💕
My introduction to Tsukihimi was Kara no Kyoukai.. was far I remember lmao, but I liked both, this game ramake looks interesting maybe I try sometime! Glad you are fine, thanks for the video!! Good job! You will try play Melty Blood: Type Lumina sometime? The game includes Tsukihimi history, and others characters, but is a fighting game.. but the new characters and history is very cool too, if you can, give a try, I would like to see a video of you talking about this ~ :3 again thanks! :3
I'm sorry but I can't play fighting games - my hands are too bad.🥺 I haven't looked into The Garden of Sinners yet, but will try to do so. Once you get into the nasuverse ... it's a rabbit hole! 😄
I just finished playing SMT5 and that Nahobino plush in the background made me giggle lol it’s very cute, I need to buy one! Also I have that extella Link (felt?) poster too!! :) I got Tsukihime recently in the mail, but I still haven’t even finished Witch of the Holy Night, which I will try to finish first. I wish I was able to experience visual novels like these back in the day, they have such an atmosphere that just sucks you in
My friend gave me a small anime figure around 10 years ago. I never knew who it was, but the second I saw the Witch on the Holy Night cover I realized that was her!!! Thank you for finally answering a years old question (by coincidence, it's Alice!)
ooh I've been wanting to get into both Tsukihime and Witch on the Holy Night, so this video was great to watch!!! Super excited to check them both out!
I'm very glad about the remake official English release! About a year or so ago I borrowed from my local library and watched the Tsukihime anime, and largely shared the same experience of it not being that good, but still engaging enough to get interested in the VN and allowing me to somewhat enjoy content about it online, like fan-art and fan discussion. And while I don't have enough money for the official English remake release, there's an online version of the original VN in English that I've been enjoying. So I guess something bad can be a bit of a gift sometimes.
Thank you for another terrific review Ms. Britta! I've been following you for many years, and your content always brings a smile to my face. Thank you!
Ah, wonderful video! I have been slowly reading through Tsukihime on my phone (through the excellent fan-made browser port) before I finally get into the remake. I've read the manga in the past and enjoyed it, but it's been some time now. I appreciate your look at the game; I haven't looked much into it since the Japanese release in 2021 and had a great time watching. It's made me even more excited to dive in when I can! I'm very glad you mentioned Witch on the Holy Night as well! I read through it last year and adored it. The rough translation and stiff prose certainly hurts the experience, but I agree that the story itself makes it a real joy. I came to truly adore Aoko, Alice, and especially Shizuki as I went; it's become an all-time favorite of mine. The bump in translation quality I've seen reported between these two releases gives me much hope for the upcoming remaster and localization of Fate/Stay Night, too. Thank you for the excellent video! I hope that you enjoy the remainder of Witch on the Holy Night :)
The artbook looks really good, I think it's kinda sad that the studio take too long for making the english/occidental version. Also, amazing steins;gate t-shirt ❤
The fate series was my intro to type moon. I was surprised to see that Tsukihime came in such a large collector’s edition style box when my copy arrived. I thought no wonder it was 80 dollars. I can’t wait for the upcoming English release of Fate.
Thank you for creating such an insightful and detailed video about the Tsukihime! As a fan, I really appreciated your deep dive into the storyline and characters. Keep up the great work!
Surprisingly, the Tsukihime anime was my first introduction to type-moon, and the series. I actually was super interested in the story and what was going on, and upon finding out about the game getting a translation. I played it...and did every choice, every bad end, and every route I couldn't stop reading it, I absolutely loved the characters, and Melty Blood became one of my favorite fighting games as well.. Tbh most of the time when I do get into a visual novel I seem to watch the what is considered bad anime first, and then play the VN. It happened with Deen/Stay Night in 2006, and with Umineko's anime. I certainly enjoyed the Tsukihime remake, played through it, I still gotta go back and get all the bad ends...and maybe figure out how to open every path for a 100% completion. Can't wait for the second part. I also need to play Witch on the Holy Night, I have the physical copy unopened for the ps4...but it's so expensive now that I'm hesitant to well open it. I think I might import a physical switch copy from Playasia and try it out that way.
I’ve been curious about this remake. I’m mostly familiar with the fighting game spinoffs but I’ve wanted to see where it all got started. Perfect timing for a F4D video on it.
I've been waited for this novel remake since forever. It is a shame that the release in the west took that long and that is just half of the VN, hopefully the 2nd part will be there soon
Thank you for your lovely coverage of Tsukihime. I've just recently finished the remake, and I am floored... Nasu's works has always had a hold on me since Fate Stay Night and Kara no Kyoukai, and Tsukihime just strengthens that grip. Also thank you for sharing your experience with your beloved. That brought an even wider smile onto my face.
Thank you for the video, strong as always. I appreciate the reminder of Tsukihime and Witch on the Holy Night, I've been meaning to experience them sometime, just not got around to it.
Tsukihime never had an all-ages version, until this remake. To which this is so different from the original that an argument can be made that it's two different entities. Tsukihime was the first game from Type Moon as a doujin group. Fate was the first game by Type Moon as an incorporated entity. Type Moon, the company actually doesn't have rights to Tsukihime, until this release, because the commercial company isn't, technically, the same as the doujin group.
been a fan of type moon since the questionable deen stay night anime...or so i thought, cause i watched the tsukihime anime back in 2003, not knowing it was a TM work Im happy to see the franchise growing and becoming more popular, as its deserved
I love the anime. Its very difficult to fit a vn into 11 episodes. The anime drops a lot of hints during the series and I think they did the route pretty interesting and intriguing
Tsukihime was an anime I watched most of when I was in anime club in college. I actually really enjoyed it, but there was an episode missing from the anime club's collection so I never finished it :(. I never realized the team went on to create the Fate series; that's one I've been meaning to watch, especially because Yuki Kajiura does the music for some of the later series. I might have to check out the VNs, too, but I usually don't get into standard VNs.
Thanks so much for making this video. I'd been waiting for this release, but because it's such a niche product news is scarce and it somewhat slipped my mind until now. I'm also a fellow kiwi, which adds concern worrying about how difficult it may be when these games have no local release.
No money needed or ever asked for 😄. Yea, it actually occurred to me as I started playing .. but I'm pretty sure I'd fall foul of all sorts of licensing and other restrictions. I tried it with Ys VIII, and that being an older game (and not a VN), I never had any trouble with my voiceovers.
Since I'm fairly new to Type Moon games, I'm not entirely sure how accurate this is; but I've seen some conversation online about how much better the localization for the Tsukihime remake is compared to Witch on the Holy Night. So the issues you're having with some of the prose may actually be more the result of the localization rather than Nasu's writing. Of course, that's just something I remember seeing when I was doing a bit of research to learn more about the release.
Yes, I've had several people with good knowledge about these VNs tell me about the quality issues with the WotHN translation. However, as a former professional translator myself, I can usually spot what are translation "infelicities" and what is poor or laboured writing. My comment about the quality of the writing referred to much more than translation issues. Things like structuring dialogue sequences, narrative exposition etc. That's really where you notice the relative inexperience (craft of writing) - not in awkward spots of translation.
@@Food4Dogs ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. I'm by no means a literature or translation expert, but I have been very much enjoying my time with the Tsukihime remake. Up till now my only exposure to Nasu's work has been with Fate anime adaptations and the Fate/ Grand Order mobile game (actually, me pulling Arcueid in the game is what made me want to read Tsukihime since I wanted to learn more about the character).
@@Food4Dogs well to be more specific, I started with the first Fate/Stay Night anime adaptation, and I ended up watching Fate/Zero later on and it snowballed from there when the Unlimited Blade Works anime started airing. I hadn't even started playing Grand Order consistently until late last year, actually.
Nice! I've been thinking about playing this one, but I'm kind of weary of the translations to be quite honest. The anime adaptation from years ago is what got me into it.
Love your videos and have been watching for like 5 years. I must say I really like your movie/tv review posts. If you ever want to make a video about any of these, people would watch! (Not trying to put more pressure on you if you don’t have time!)
Thank you! 5 years is a long time (my channel is only 6 years old), so you deserve Veteran status! 😀 I can't make videos about film or TV or anime because I'd run into copyright problems with showing footage. And I certainly wouldn't want to use trailers bc those for movies are terrible these days - packed with spoilers. 🫤
@@Food4Dogs Otherwise it would be enough to just talk about the movies and series. I think you are charismatic enough to make such videos interesting even without any visual material. I also really liked Scavengers Reign, which caught my attention last year because of the high ratings on Letterboxd
I wanted to recommend going through Tsukihime's original VN (it has a very good fan translation) but that will be too much work. With that said, I'm glad that you enjoyed your experience with it.
I personalyl got interested in Tsukihime after learning about Shiki and his eyes. It is such a cool concept. I also really like the art and think Arcueid is amazing without actually knowing here yet. I also recently watched a clip of the non existing anime and saw non existent scenes that were so terrible that I'm glad they don't exist. Ok, on another note, it is great that the the anime let you bond with your partner over a cool story he would not have experienced otherwise. It is just sad that the anime is so shoddy and bad that the only thing people get form the experience is the concept of the Nasuverse. Oh, btw, Mahoyo is actually getting an anime from, I think, I forgot the studios name. The guys that did the other fate anime. Why the hell can't I remember that name? Anyway, now that you know fate and Tsukihime go watch Carnival Phantasm! You'll love it! It is basically just pure comedy and gags, but there is a funny Aoko scene and you might see her in a new light. I am debating if i want to import the physical versions or if I am going digital, but I might just go digital. I can't really afford to import the game and I really just want to play it. I am so sad I'm so poor. Anyway, I am preordering Ys X tomorrow and will just make myself some food over the course of the next few weeks with the ingredients I have. I just need to head to the kitchen and actually cook something. Pizza sounds great. And bread. I like bread. But yeah, Type moon is great and has really cool stuff form what I've seen. Can't to play fate and the rest. I hope I have a good time.
As someone who never finished Tsukihime when I pirated it as a teenager I am really hoping I can get a hold of a copy. But that exchange rate!!! NZ Dollar doesn't get too far nowadays.
Ha - exchange rate, esp against the US dollar .. 🥺 I really hesitate to order anything from the States these days, it's brutal. Fortunately, Tsukihime was on pre-order for a long time, and it wasn't too bad back when I placed the order. The Canadian dollar is more forgiving, so I tend to order more from VGP in Canada these days (also their service is better than Amazon).
