You definitely cornered the RU-vid fishing market with your in depth fishing reel analyses, appreciate your input was so excited about buying this reel but with your discovery of that issue , may have to wait a lil longer to buy a reel that's just come out , maybe wait for Gen 2 or 3 to come out then buy ! keep the vids coming .
Nice eggbeater man!! Wouldn’t mind getting my hands on that and ripping it apart to compare my issues with your issues! Anyways.. kept me interested with this one. So nice to see another egg beater in pieces on your channel again! Thanks for the vid!!
I viewed the Saltx in my local shop a few months back and didn't like the finish or the feel. It was too tight and the machine work looked to be of lower grade. I think you're review has confirmed my initial fears. I don't see myself considering this reel as a viable purchase. Great review as always..!
That grease reminds me a lot of Corrosion X, especially with how sticky it was. I’ve been using that for a little over a year now since I saw the video you made on it, and it’s been amazing every time I’ve used it. Not a single bit of corrosion on any of my salt reels, outside of some AR clutches due to lack of sealing. Also, thank you for bringing your hands back, my night has been made. :)
Corrosion x or Aquashield? Corrosion x isn't as stretchy as this stuff....which is what makes the aquashield unique.....This stuff is like a heavier goopier thicker aquashield...The film it leaves behind is like nothing I've ever used other than krytox....to de grease my bench involved scrubbing and a commercial de greaser that is strong enough to remove anodizing....lol.
Hi i been watching your channel for long time. I really like how you explain reels. Between saltx 4000 vs vr50 which one you're prefer? For surfing? Thank you for your good work.
Great video good to see whats inside my new reel im not going to touch it i will fish it then send to you in the fall ! I fish everyday here in ma. During striper season so it will get a good work out.
Thanks homie!!!! I"ll be very interested.....just be sure to beat the snot outta it......I don't want no shiny rod rack queen.....rash it up good.... :)
this seems like a well made piece of equiptment but i wish they made a smaller size. hey with the quality this reels seems to be built on smaller should handle what i go for . plus it would weigh less. i really enjoy this fellows take downs. so much info in such little time.
Salt X, Slammer III, old Spheros SW... Which one would you recommend for shore jigging with an ocasional surf now and then? Will be used with a 10ft rod and 40lbs braid. I know they'll all get the job done but if you had to choose Which one would you pick? Also, great video as always. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. You have become my GO-TO guy for everything reel related, and i personally think you and Alan Hawk are the golden standart of thourough, unbiased tackle reviews. Hope u read this. Sore for my bad english.
Bro your the best at this, how has a company not put you the payroll?? Big question I have for you for fishing the Long Island Sound shore, jetty, yak, of you had to choose 1 Certate or SaltX, or are they both Overkill and a spheros will do just fine, thanks.
Thanks for the kind words.......I'm not entirely sure any companies really like me all that much....I've had threats and companies have threatened people I affiliate with over things I've put out...lol....Certate is a beautiful reel.....Not as rugged as a spheros / saragossa......This reel...is probably not gonna be what ya want for light presentations or slack line presentations where you jig through the slack on certain baits......Spinfisher vi is probably the most proven....The stradic FL is an amazing reel and my pick for best all arounder under 400$ but I don't know how it is holding up in the salt....I guess no news it great news....I literally haven't heard a peep about how its held up which is strange..... Gonna post up a thread on Stripersonline.com right now asking....
Thought they are in very different price points, it would be interesting to compare the innards of the Tsunami 4000 to the Okuma Azores Z-4000H, also intended for salt water. Given the way that a budget level Okuma Epixor reel stood up to Elias-level use, the Azores might be a viable alternative that's lighter by a few ounces. ( with 1/2 the advertised drag, but less than 1/2 the price )
The aluminum main shaft is a deal maker or deal breaker for me. As of now, I'm leaning more toward spending the extra $150 for a Van Stall VR125 G2 with the new large diameter stainless main shaft. I am basing it on the ability to get replacement parts easily for the Van Stall. The Tsunami Salt X looks very promising, but I have my doubts on the longevity of main shaft and the knob. It may be hard to impossible to get replacement parts in the future. EDIT: I finally decided on and bought a VR200 Gen 2 in silver. I thought it best to spend my money on a reel that's proven itself over several years. A reel that I can find parts for. I will revisit the SaltX in a few years and most likely buy one if they prove to hold up. There is one main sticky point. I will have to be able to change the knob out on it. If that can't be done without drilling the handle out, it's a no deal.
I have some friends that give me protos to look at....and then they report my findings...lol I don't know how letting on that I have direct ties with companies would be taken by the audience....even though I'd still call it a turd if it were...know what I mean....I still see posts fwded to me with that reel test schmuck saying I'm in daiwa's pocket...when nobody knows that they threatened me and those I work with for some of the stuff I put out....Hell the vp of shimano USA wasn't happy with a vid I put out the other day .....These companies are so behind the times it's laughable.....
Another great review Scoob. I hope Tsunami sees it and addresses the chewed up axle and loose/stripped screw. Seems a little overkill for a kayak application. Although i do love seeing the face on guys with their 3000$ hobies, 400-600$ reels, 300$ rods, and 1000$ electronics, when they roll their yak and its all gone lol.
Thank man!! Elias and I embarked on an experiment last spring....He likes the daiwa fuego.....I sent him the lower end non magsealed Exceler that I greased and looobed for saltwater abuse...and we were going to see if it outlasted the fuego......that lasted 2 trips...until it got knocked out of the rod holder and sank to the bottom of the ocean...lmao.... In regards to Tsunami seeing it..Their NE rep is a SOL member....I sent an abridged version of this video early last week so they can see what I found ahead of the video......Other than an appreciative heads up...I haven't heard back yet.....My bet is they're going to work with the manufacturer and tighten up some loose ends.
@@TackleAdvisors I recall that video from Elias lol. A cheaper outfit always takes the sting out of losing gear. And if it can happen to Elias, none of us are safe lol.
Great review, thanks. In almost any.field a start up can disrupt the incumbent manufacturers. But with reels the investment in plant, machinery, and technology, makes that almost impossible. So i buy all manner of rods, its hard for me to go past the big three international reel makers. Shimano, Daiwa, and Penn
@Tackle Advisors I've got a saltx 6k that I've been beating on commercial fishing for spanish mackerel here in FL, that something has failed in. Firstly developed the antireverse bearing squeak, and now feels nice and crunchy. I took it apart once to re-grease after it's first couple thousand pounds of catch. I'd like to send it in to you for a diagnosis of failure if I could. I'd expect a reel at this price point to fair far better than it has as I've got a couple shimano spheros reels, a 6k, and 8k doing the same duty going on their third season.
Very interesting... This is the first set of real issues I've heard... And for what it's worth.. The 4k developed a clutch squeek but I couldn't confirm is it was something I did so left that out. I did fix it though. (had a scorpion mgl do it too.) Damn birds chirping... Lol. Do you know Dennis? He's a land based comm. Down south Florida.. Shoot me an email tackleadvisorsinitiative@gmail.com
@@TackleAdvisorsIt was the spool shaft that had began to fail allowing the spool to come into contact with the rotor with a fish on, causing binding and some of the roughness I was experiencing. I took the spool off and it had stress cracked at the cross pin, and only took a slight bit of wiggling by hand to finish breaking the shaft ( like breaking a paper clip by bending it back and forth ). After this failure all I can conclude is that aluminum is a poor choice of material for a spool shaft on a reel that is capable of putting out a hefty amount of drag.
Dang, not what i want to hear. Found a pre owned one for a little over 120 bucks seems to be in excellent condition original owner, not going to be putting it through as much stress as you did but doesn't help. Mostly open beaches and jetty/rock hopping in the NE for stripers/blues but makes me think another reel might be better
@@moerelaxing6364 One reel I will stand by, after many many days, into years of heavy heavy use is the shimano saragosa. I still have the first one i bought, and while it's been put up wet, and rode hard it still performs well. Could use a little tune up though. Unless you want to get into daiwa saltiga levels of refinement and budget I wouldn't buy anything else for salty shores. The new small saltiga coming out really has me interested though.
Hey Nick! Great review of the Saltx 2 reels on iCast 2023 with Jim. Question, I’m a right hand retrieve. Any issues with 2nd generation Saltx switching the handle to the right side? I thought there were issues with the 1st generation. Thanks, Dee.
Had a 6000 explode in my hand it was under warranty so got a new one . It started rusting at the bail . After 8 months it started to sound like a mouse every time I reeled in . Bought it fall run 2019 exploded 2020 august . It is not completely sealed
@@jasoncolon8666 ahh so lucky, i called bimini bay outfitters and they said they don't have any in the inventory....so i have to wait till december.... i see that many people who had the salt x eventually bought the van staal, which is the real deal. i might actually consider as well. is the van staal completely sealed?
As far as I've seen..Correct....There isn't any gear hobbing done on that side of the axel ...Under the opposite side cap there is a seal that will get chewed up......but it's a threaded cap with an additional o ring so no way water is getting by that.
I’m rather disappointed in the build quality of this reel. Was looking for a more robust replacement for my 2013 Stella SW 4000, which incidentally broke yesterday. The other sealed reels of this size only come in left hand retrieve which is unsuitable for me.
I can tell you the spinfisher is a very good reel...especially the new one...and I've been anti penn for spinner for a long time....My guess is they're holding up nicely. I forwarded the "bad" to Tsunami a few days ahead of this *rep is on Stripers Online and a good dude......I hate seeing stuff like this...my guess is they're going to want the reel...and they're going to want to shore this up real quick...They invested a lot of money in this product launch....and it's potential is very real....I bet after this I'll be getting quite a bit of feedback which will prove valuable to consumers and Tsunami. I also have no way to verify if that machining issue is widespread or a one off.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS! What about line lay? I “ HATE MY VR50 “ line lay is terrible! Is the SaltX 4000 any better? I bought the VR50, it’s junk!
Line lay is very good for both sizes...they did a good job on that. If it makes you feel any better...the drag click on my bailed stalls 10 years ago failed within 2 months on 2 VSB150s...I haven't heard much bad about the VR50's line lay...Does it cave towards the top or is it like old school vs...hourglass shaped.
I bought one at the beginning of the season and had to send it back after the second use because the spring for the clicker fell out. I got a brand new one and six weeks later the drag is silent again. The real work fine but there's no sound to the drag.
That’s a common problem with a lot of fully sealed reels. I know van staals that lose the clicker on the first day. You just won’t be able to hear the drag.
Looks great reel.. I'm going to get a new reel and I am still did make up my mind plz halp If you had to choose between the shimano stradic 5000 fl 2019 and penn slammer 3 4500 for saltwater inshore light popping and jigging which one would choice..
Since youre a northeastern fisherman have you tried the ultegra ci4 xtc 14000? Im looking for a reel for my 12 foot tiralejo atm and thats what ive been looking at unless u have another suggestion for it. It will be a striper set up.
Nice review again. I have opportunity to get Stradic FL 5000 for 119€ and Shimano Sustain 5000XG FI for 129€. What is better deal from your point of view?
I doubt it.. A true review would involve many hours put on it. It's probably a great reel... I might jump on a torque 3 if that ever makes it.. I don't think the 2s sold very well.... At all... There's more chatter about the old STILL than the new.
Great video , someone is selling me one for $200 I’m not sure if it’s a good price or something may be wrong with it. Never had one so I don’t know what to look for . Do you recommend knowing you’ve had it for a while saltsx 4000 model ??? Thank you 🙏
every time you take it apart im just like nooooo youll never get it back together the right way... oh wait... its tackle advisors he just somehow remembers how to put it back.
I currently have a Stradic Ci4+ 3000 that I use on a 7'6 ML Shimano Hard Rocker for fluke fishing with 1/4 - 1/2 oz bucktails from shore. I was wondering if you think it would be worth it for me to sell my Stradic Ci4+ and get a Stradic FL 3000 instead? I mostly fish from jetties, calm beaches and bays so I just need something to keep the sand out and have decent sealing because my reels occasionally get dunked for a few seconds but nothing major. Love the vids btw!
Don’t waste your money on the SaltX reels. I have the 6000 and the first time I got hit by a wave on the surf it locked up with sand and has a terrible squeaking sound. It gets worse and worse every outing. Comment below if you have issues with your saltx reel.
Only the oil in the spray can... Used it on a tatula spinner in replacement of all other lubes... I can't tell if it's different than any other oil. I've never used any of their other products
and I have also broken a daiwa TD blacks (the aussie model of the tatula) AR cluch when I hooked a 30 kilo plus yellowtail kingfish where I live in australia
I do not foresee that being an issue.....the anodizing helps...the grease also helps....Stainless on aluminum has been in the saltwater game for a century....I wouldn't be a concern to me...(just think..stainless screws into aluminum frames....Usually you only see that on reel feet on conventionals never taken off the rod.
IF the tool isn't working....you need this tool...it's cheap...6 bux shipped amzn.to/2SalhcD I couldn't open the 2 I worked on...and one of the reps needed the tool mentioned above to open it.
U seem to know so much about these reels I was wondering if u would do repairs. I would obviously pay u. I have 2 401 TE Shimano Calcutta’s that cost me 400$ brand new that are discontinued. This sucks because I can no longer send them in to get serviced and I really love these reels. I was wondering if I sent u both of them if u could sent me back 1 complete working reel. If u can get both of them working u could keep the other.
@@TackleAdvisors interesting I just traded my old Certate 4000 sh for a slightly used tp 5k. very different reels with very different feels but liking the tp a lot with the super light rotor and the body and the high retrieve rate (6.2)
mines making a squeaking noise after 15 or so revolutions. i sent it in for repairs and they replaced the 1 antireverse bearing, but still has that persistent squeaking noise. I can't determine what it may be related to....i just got 1 month ago.
Run it till the end of the warranty, if it hasn't taken a crap at that point, it's probably the seals added friction you can probably take the reel apart and lube up the seals with a silicone lubricant and it'll go away.
Hi my drag isnt clicking anymore I only fished it 4x and for some reason after tonight the drag doesnt click as it should. Is there a spring under the spool? I think if so then mine is missing. Do you know how to fix this issue? If so I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thanks
So your saying that raw egg will get into this reel while I'm beating enough eggs to make scrambled eggs for everyone on the party boat? Guess I'll have to look at other egg beaters for small tuna and yellowtail.
I do actually ennjoy fishing.....Funny little aside....Elias V fishing called me after I uploaded a trout fishing video and was amazed at how it looked like I was having fun.....(I talk to him almost daily depending on schedules) I keep telling him he's doing it wrong...lolol
พงษ์พันธุ์ โปรณะ well I’ve pulled out little pin fish and I’ve pulled 35inch snook and tarpon anything you want this is honestly one of the most versatile reels out there
I dunno man....to my eye it doesn't look anything like it..... I'll be tearing down that reel this week...(you're is even more compact than this......)
Screw on handle loses my business everytime. Don't like bumping the handle while walking and it spins off and you lose it. Happened to me with a Pflueger and couldn't get a replacement handle for two years. Had to buy another cheapo reel just for it's handle. Can't imagine getting a high end handle replacement.
I rememeber 10 years ago 70 miles into a 110 mile 3am run to the tuna grounds my buddy in a bean bag chair taking a zeebass 27 handle to the noggin.....The rod / reel was in the rocket launchers and it backed off and spun off.....luckily we were only going 25 kts (in the dark ) and it landed in the boat..lol....I know what you're saying. Daiwa Penn and everyone else's back off way to easily....Even Saltigas and Torques.....Shimano though takes quite a bit more to back it off...it's not an instant break free....Something to consider....But the threaded on connection is superior to the hex method.
LOL....It's the smart thing to do in my opinion...ESPECIALLY for salt use. I can't tell you how many times I've received brand new reels and they were bone dry inside or had a bad seal.
Are you sure about the spool shaft being made out of aluminum? (about 546min into the review) never seen a shaft made out of aluminum in spinning reels before it is not the best material for a spool shaft even if it was made from T6061 and coated so far that's that is the only thing l dislike about the reel, Other than that it was a good review.
@@TackleAdvisors Thanks for the replay and confirmation, still never did l come across an alum. spool shaft in all the reels l serviced, learn something new every day. Keep up the good work. SOL-LB
The new stradic or Spheros 3k 4k should fit that bill nicely......Or the spinfisher....You also have the Saltist back bay or the blue salltist on a deal (can be had around 160.....all good reel.s
@@TackleAdvisors i think i will go with the saltist or i still think that Daiwa BG is a good reel if i put a shit ton of lubricant. And i m afraid to buy a stradic because i have some bad experience with shimano reels.
eh I'll pass. Every tsunami real I've had has been terrible and had an issue with it. Moved on to Saragosa and Slammers and no issues since. Should have saved my money in the first place and avoided tsunamis.
When I say it’s junk... the clicker is gone. The flimsy spring and detent, did not last at all. Not that that matters. But you spend over $400.00 for a reel and in less then a season the clicker is gone??? And again the line lay sucks! I have a VR200 and a VR150, I fish them hard. Never have a problem with wind knots. The VR50, constantly! I don’t even want to fish that piece of crap anymore!
