I'm so glad this channel exists. Sensei comes across as so personable and wise, and teaches in a way that it makes easy to digest and eager for one to practice. Thanks for showing me a mechanically more practical way of doing Tsurikomi.

Thank you so much! We think so too, that's why we badgered him for years to let us record his classes :) The best part is that these are just regular classes, he hasn't changed anything since the cameras went up. Lots more to come too!

This and Sode Tsuri are some of the most technical throws in judo. 🧐

Thanks. I have this on my next belt test. The Kodokan website shows a straight right arm. I’ve heard this is the kata form. Is that true?

Yes, the straight arm is demonstrated on the Kodokan Nage No Kata video. It is one of several ways to do it. Best wishes on your exam.

Thanks for the video. It's very helpful. But I have a question to you. In Nage no Kata the arm, which makes Tsurike has to be straight. So far, so good. My partner is 6ft high, I'm 6.5ft. When I stand normal, my arm comes to more than 7ft. You see my problem? It's not possible to me to find a way to throw it a expected. Do you have a tip for me? Thanks in advance for your answer. Regards, Dirk.

Thank you Dirk! Riki sensei always tells us that kata practice is about constant quality improvements, not doing a technique in one super-exact way. Will your kata examiners agree that your height is preventing you from doing the throw the way they expect and let you do a modification, like an underhook or something? If not, perhaps you can bend your knees more and get six more inches under uke. Nage-no-kata should be more about continuous improvement than anything else, here's hoping your judges agree!

@@RikiDojoUSA Thanks for your answer. I will talk to him, to find a way to throw it. By the way, I 'm 56 years old. My options to lower myself are not really good anymore. Regards, Dirk.

You are correct. Take a look at the Kodokan Nage no Kata video and you’ll see a more straight armed way of doing it. Develope a way that is comfortable and effective for YOU. Gambatte!
