As of mid-2022, only 16 per cent of the Toronto Transit Commission's operators are women. The agency is working toward a goal of hiring women in four of every 10 new operator positions. Nick Westoll reports.
I really don't care whom is driving the bus or subway, as long as they deserve the job, was the best person for the job, and is a good driver. All this bs about gender quotas simply makes me as a passenger nervous that the person behind the wheel of the bus is only there because of a target, but in reality they drive no better than Spongebob Squarepants. I have zero respect for ANY company that hires someone simply based on gender or ethnic/skin colour quotas.
This is terrible. Absolutely dreadful. Best person for the job, period. Regardless of gender. We're jeopardizing people's safety now to meet quotas?? This entire ideology is appalling.

This is excellent. I applaud this campaign. At the same time, however, can we also now require that 40% of biological women sign up for the draft and join the male dominated military at the frontlines?
To all you upset by this story TTC has a plan in place to have autonomous buses by 2030. So no driver required, only 8 years away... Let that sink in...
@Andy D I'm just reporting their plan which as usual to get rid of high paid drivers. Apparently they will have just a low paid security guard on each bus...
There is no "plan" by the TTC nor any other transit agency in the country to have autonomous buses by 2030. The TTC just placed an order over the next few years for almost 600 conventional buses and there are no autonomous conventional style buses currently being manufactured at a commercial level nor has Transport Canada given the required certification of any such vehicle. The recent pilot project with the West Rouge Automated Minibus was cancelled within in 2 months of trials and didn't carry a single passenger.
Wait, so people think they're just going to hire people that shouldn't have the job and not receive training before starting said job? Interesting mindset, unless they're all bots =P
My guess and I could wrong, the reason why there's not that many females in the job is probably because they're not interested making this whole thing pretty much pointless.
Fix insane wait times and delays? no. A lot of my TTC drives have been women, I don’t really see the issue? If women want to work they will, so if you turn away competent drivers who happened to be men, that means less drivers, and more wait times… great job TTC
