I’d just like to add info I learned from a This Old House video. The staining on the “bell” end is because it was sitting too low in the wall and sitting in water. When you use the lever to drain the tub, it wasn’t high enough to allow draining. Adjusting the height can fix the problem.
Thank you! My tub was draining super slow. I watched your vid and was able to take the thing apart by myself and (!) I figured out that the line leading to the weight was too low. I twisted it a bit higher and now the tub drains perfectly fast! Plus it still holds water. I’m so thankful to you!
It took me a few hot minutes to get this completed but most of it was digging out the long part out of the hole because the old one came apart when I was pulling it out. I was also a dumb dumb and put the cover on upside down and it took me a bit to figure out what a I did. I enjoyed your video, you explained it well.
Thank you! Those whoopsies happen. I replaced the cartridge behind the knob and cold and hot has been backwards since 😂 never took it apart to switch it properly. Learn as we go.
I appreciate you taking the time and effort to explain this! I almost killed my dang self trying to get that thing out and re attaching the pin! Blessings to you and thanks again 😊
The existing latch lever was severely corroded but I eventually removed the cap, lever, and plunger assembly. Time for a trip to Home Depot. Thanks for the info. Better than dumping cash to the plumber.
Looks like exactly what I need to have to fix my problem and I already have the screws out and cover plate out but I can’t see your video. It is too small and in a small square window only…I tried to enlarge it and it won’t let me so I just thought I’d give you that update 🙂 I appreciate what you have done here but I really wish I could see it better. Thank you so much for taking the time to do it and maybe you can enlarge it somehow for others to benefit more …By the way that crazy icon picture to the left is NOT ME… my grandson set that up lol I don’t know how to get rid of it. Lol lol
I know. After I took all the clips and uploaded this is what I had. None of my other videos are like this. It’s been awhile since I posted this but I don’t remember it being so small while creating so I’m not sure what happened during editing. I just pulled the cover off and it should pull a long piece with weight attached. From there you should be able to see how to remove and attach the new parts. Yes, it’s still up close or slightly cutoff but you should be able to see necessary steps hopefully 🤞🏽
I learned what a cotter pin was from "Leave it to Beaver" They were fixing wheels for a go kart. Back in the day! For some odd reason that stuck with me and was a useful little episode. Thx Beaver and Ward. LoL 😊
No personal experience but someone else asking that question was told a shop vac to suck it up could work and there is some type of tool you’d ask about at a hardware store to grab it out.
My lever works, my problem is the screws are no longer holding the cover onto my tub. The screws are just screwing right through all of the sudden and it falls off and hangs into the tub. I have no idea why or how to fix it.
I would just attempt troubleshooting. Have you tried new screws? If new screws are still not working I would try replacing the unit and also check holes where lever assembly attaches with screws to see if the part is stripped.
Omg i have a serious problem in this old house. The weight part wasent there when i took it apart. And i also tried a wire into the drain in the bathtub and the wire dosent go any further it feels like a metal there.
You can purchase the weight separately. Now the hole where the lever sits should go straight into a waste pipe but I’m no plumbing expert but generally it should. I’m not sure how your pipes are configured but the one that the water drains into would hit metal because it runs horizontal.
@@myieasdiy Thank you. It goes straight. But them at the bottom is not straight is like a t shape. And i already bought a trip lever. But the problem is im not able to fish out the one that it broke and is stock somewhere in the pipes.
@private user Which you good luck. I tried so manythings even to fish it out with different things but it didn't work out for me. I think I'm going to have to pay some one to come and do it.
Idk if this will help but the plunger is likely copper or another non ferris metal (so it doesn't rust) If thats the case a magnet on a string won't work. If there are any metal pieces it may still pick it up. Try a borroscope with a hook on it to hook the device (this will take alot of practice and patience) they sell cheap ones that you could use. Wouldn't use those for buisness but for diy light use they should survive. Most are "water proof" but don't trust that statement. It's how I ended up finding a major leak behind my wall for the shower.
Do this part has to do if my bathtub is not draining? Because i feel is clog but i dont see any hair. But i did notist that part your showing the weight is missing i dont know if thats whats causing my clog.
The water was sitting in the tub and draining super slow before I fixed this. It could take 20 mins or more to drain after a shower when this was broken. After replacing I had no issue.
@@myieasdiy Thanks. Probably then thats why my water is just sitting in the bathtub also. What i notist the weight and which is holding it is not in the cover know i dont have no idea to get it fix.
PLEASE HELP: My trip-lever broke on my shower/tub and I had to temporarily rig it to stay in the down-position so my tub would drain while I shower, but as I ran the water to shower it started to severly leak into the room directly below downstairs, what happened and how can I fix this?
Oh no. I have recently had the bathroom remodeled and my ceiling was opened and repaired due to mold from long term water damage. I’m no pro in this area but sounds like something else. There is typically a j-shaped pipe connected to your tub drain the lever is typically connected to a weight that just plugging the pipe up by moving the lever up and down. My thoughts are the pipe itself is possibly leaking. If you have an access panel to the plumbing you can see where the water is coming from.
What if the lever broke off. My lever worn out and broke off. I went to home depot and brought the replacement kit should I be able to replace it easily with no issues or having to buy anything extra ?
I think it should be just the same to replace. Once you remove the screws and faceplate check to see if everything else is still attached. Worst case if the back piece the lever was attached to is gone and the arm that holds the weight is no longer attached you might try fishing out with a wire hanger.
I’m no professional by any means. From what I’ve read online there is a grabber tool however most say they were unsuccessful with it. A few people said a bent coat hanger worked after a few tries otherwise this might require a plumber or removing the drain if you’re comfortable doing so.
If it looks like the same type of lever style I’m not certain but could be rust or calcium build up. I would suggest searching for stuck drain lever or stopper videos. If it’s a different style I honestly don’t know. This was a first time for me doing this. Sorry I couldn’t give you a fix for this but I looked it up and saw this issue so I’m sure you can find a good one on RU-vid that will help.
