At The Maison, April 12, 2018. I had to sit on the floor by the door so pardon all of the people walking in front of the camera. The Maison's PA system does a poor job of amplifying Erika's voice but you can hear the front line very well.

Many thanks, James. 'Mississippi River Blues' (Big Bill Broonzy, 1934) was later recorded under the title 'Big Boat' by Washboard Sam. It appears to be an archetypical 16-bar tune, starting with the Magnolia Chord Progression [I - I7 - IV - IVm]. You can hear the words clearly on Broonzy's version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EoPYoOPVRcs.html . He sings it in G, whereas Erika is more comfortable with the key of E flat.

Pops you may recognize the date and performance as the last time you were in New Orleans. We sat together that night at the Maison at a table far from the stage and I excused myself long enough to go up front and record a few songs, including their fantastic performance of "Once in a While."

Thanks, James. I remember the night with enormous nostalgia and affection. And the following day we heard the Audacity Brass Band (including Haruka - who excitedly told us of her pregnancy), Catie Rodgers and her Swing Orchestra, and Charlie Halloran’s Chosen Six. On the Saturday we were trapped in the hotel pretty well all day by a tropical storm. On Sunday we heard the Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band in Preservation Hall; and on the Monday I had the great pleasure of meeting Shaye’s mother. But alas: on Wednesday 18th, we had to say good-bye to New Orleans for the last time and set out on our 29-hour journey home.

Actually loved the "raw" sound of this recording. Thanks James. Who is that on the clarinet?
@JamesSterling
@JamesSterling Год назад
That is the incomparable Ewan Bleach from England. The conditions were difficult for recording. A large noisy crowd during French Quarter Festival and my usual seat at the end of the bar near the band was taken.

@@JamesSterlingis he the dude that played on their jubilee stomp video?
@JamesSterling
@JamesSterling Год назад
Yes, Ewan played in a couple of videos of "Jubilee Stomp" posted by The WSM. Ewan played with the band for most of the year back around 2015, as did Jonathan Doyle. Ewan returned for brief stints with the band during festival season a few years ago.

Don't swing the Sousa around so much; it's a BIG directional bell, and its position can change the sound dynamics.

Yes it is. And that video of "Once in a While" is one of my favorites among the hundreds I have made of the band.
