Nothing crazy but I really enjoyed working on these cameras, just sharing some of it.
Probably manufactured around 1988 according to the date code on many ICs.

I know they were an annoyance back in the day, but I love the trails light sources leave on tube sensors - so much more aesthetic than CCD overflow lines! I love noticing it in old TV shows (especially studio-shot with candles), and they persisted into consumer portable cameras for a while after broadcasters already switched to CCD.

Update: I finally found a way to extract RGB from the Camera. If I'm not posting another video, feel free to ask for details.

What did you come up with?

@@BenHelweg Simply used the 3 test point on the ENC card, and found some H/V signals around those point. 75Ohm and some caps to remove the DC component and voila! I had to increase the gain slightly on the OSSC so I guess next step is to get a donor ENC card and remove the rest of the circuit after those 3 test points to get all the signal to the OSSC. If I had money and time, I'd totally work on a new driver board to get 1080p out of those tubes... That's the beauty of picture tubes, sky is the limit!

@@AnalogThinker Love your work, that's awesome. GOOD NEWS! A really lovely person Kevin Mead on instagram got in touch and shared a Z31 service manual with me. In fact he went and bought the service manual off ebay and scanned the thing manually himself, and he doesn't even have a z31! I'll try to link it below (to his wordpress), but if that doesn't work then I'll mail it to you and/or list the link in the description of one of my videos. Cheers! archivedmedia.wordpress.com/2019/04/13/hitachi-fp-z31-fp-z31l-portable-color-camera-service-manual-1980/

Also, I have some images from the interior of my RGB box if you'd like them to reverse engineer something.

@@AnalogThinker Whats the best way to capture the analog RGB signals? I'm getting a Sony DXC-M3A which is a 3 tube. I use my Digital8 camcorder to capture but it won't accept RGB. I do have an HDMI capture card so should I just get an RGB to HDMI converter?

The lag or comet-trailing can be somewhat mitigated by adjusting the beam controls and I've been able to get it in a pretty good place so that only really bright stuff renders a trail, but it probably comes at a cost of reduced tube life or something. I actually love the look of the trail anyway!

Yes, I figured this out playing with those trimpots. It was very bad on the green to start with but I got it to a sweet spot I think!

What beam controls in particular? I have several Ikegami ITC-730A units and one of them has much worse highlight bloom/trails than the others.

Hey, I I have an Ikegami HL-95B 3 tube camera, and it doesn't focus when zoomed out no matter WHAT I do. I've adjusted front focus, back focus on the lens, and even back focus for the green tube, but it will not focus. It does focus when zoomed and focused at 0.6m at a back focus chart. I know the lens elements are good, so I'm assuming the optical block needs adjustment? I do not have a service manual sadly.

Hi A Thinker... Great video... I did take the side panel off mine but I wouldn't dare touch anything. I took some photos and a quick video to send to a friend who looks at electrical equipment. I'm hoping he can help me... if not I'm wondering where you are based? I'm in Birmingham, UK... Kind regards and keep up the good work...

I recently found this exact camera in my basement. It was my late father's and I would like to try to calibrate it for future projects (settings have not been changed in 25+ years), but sadly he took his knowledge to the grave and I cannot find any information on how to do it. If anyone has any information, links, or books about the process of focusing the beams and adjusting settings it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Sam, Ben Helweg made a manual available here: www.manualslib.com/products/Hitachi-Fp-Z31-4188153.html We also have a full service manual here but my friend would need to scan it, it's a lengthy process, so many pages of different formats haha. In a nutshell, be careful with high voltage, use a very good monitor, mark all pots factory position so you can go back in case of a big mess, cutoff R and B, start with green alignment and convergence, then adjust the other tubes one at a time to match the green. A pattern is highly recommended. In case you are not sure, don't touch it. Resource is hard to come by, as you can see in this video I also have a generic Tube Camera service book, but every camera is so different that I haven't found it much useful. It explains the theory of operation which is a good start. Let us know how it goes or post a video and we may provide some advice! (Or if you are local just drop it).
