I hope you can get your hands on the APOS RAY tubes. They are a modern production and an affiliate of PS Vane out of China. There might be some promise here. Worth a try.
Over the years I've tried all kinds of Chinese production (cheap and expensive), as well as modern JJ's and Russian New Sensor re-issues and nothing has impressed me (most of it has been junk). But we're a vintage tube seller, for good reason, the original version of these types are almost always superior sonically. If a modern tube competes favorably, it often costs as much or more than the original vintage type!
@@tubelab194there is a bit of hype surrounding the APOS RAY TUBES (6SN7 & 12AU7) and my feeling it would be great if an honest and credible mind(yours 😅) could get your ears on them. ❤
Given the reduction in EL34 and KT88 supply, are there any tubes that can be adapted (like with the 6CG7 and I think the 6GU7) for the power tubes in the R8? Thank you.
No and we're always looking, the reason there aren't any close cousins is because power tubes are very specialized, so if you needed something like a KT88 or EL34 for your circuit, you wouldn't design a close type, you'd just use the KT88 or EL34. Luckily the vintage EL34 is still a commonly available tube, it's only certain high demand ones like the mullard xf2's that are disappearing fast. And the vintage KT88 and 6550's are almost gone. We will probably make up an occasional quad but nothing like the cases of true Svet 6550c's we used to have in stock.
We will probably make up an occasional quad but I think the supply of quality vintage Svet 6550c's is at an end. We used to have cases of them, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine has meant that many tubes aren't available and some like our supplier in Mariupol (Eastern Ukraine), lost his entire warehouse of vintage tubes to Russian bombs.
No and yes, Caution! many adapters handle pin 9 filament tap differently. What our adapter does is drop pin 9 altogether, so when you plug a 12au7 in, it requires that the octal socket you are plugging into has 12v supply for filament and is wired for a standard 6sn7. So in most cases this won't work. But there are adapters designed to utilize the pin 9 centre tap so that you can run a 12AU7 at 6v filament supply. A much smarter approach imo is to utilize an electrically compatible 6v tube like the 6GU7 or 6CG7 as a replacement for the 6sn7 - if that's what you're thinking.
