I plan to convert my tubed hardtail emtb commuter to tubeless next tire replacement. I am excited to do it. I didn’t know about tubeless bicycle tires until a year ago, I knew for vehicles and trailers, and I want them. I am tired of the anxiety behind having Tubed Tires. So now I am going to convert it to full tubeless emtb. Thankfully your other Channels, including this one, have taught me a lot involving new technologies involving bicycles and the existence of e-bikes. Thank you again.

I realize there was a bit of joking going on in the video but carrying a tube for backup with tubeless setups is a very good idea. Had a flat one time that sealant wouldn't fix because a nail went through the tire and rim tape including the first wall of a double wall rim. I put the tube in and rode home no issues. Then put a vulcanized patch on the tire retaped the rim back to tubeless. Tubeless works great on most punctures but not all.

I use slime inner tubes. I don't ride that often so I need a solution that is low maintainence. Usually I just need to top the pressures up before a ride. At worst with tubes and slime you need to remove the thorn and maybe move the tyre round away from the hole. Usually don't know there is a problem unless the tyre won't stay up between uses.

Tubeless may work in the UK but when you live in a hot climate you have to repeatedly rotate the wheels when not riding for a period of time which is not practical. I use tubes and sealant which I find is an excellent option

Flat out is a military grade sealant which can be added to tubes. This method is preferable since it keeps the gunk build up off the rim and tire bead.

Overall tubeless is the best system. It's a bit of a faff if you use the bike infrequently as it can drop pressure faster during storage, and you have to remember to top up the sealant every few months... but as Steve demonstrated it is far more hassle to fix a puncture in a tube on a cold muddy hillside, when if running tubeless you wouldn't have even noticed that it occurred. I will save tubes for use on my commuter bike... but tubeless is the way to go for mountain biking.

Was a bit concerned with the drill for the rim and tape, and if you're using the plugs put them in at a shallow angle away from any potential contact with the tape- don't want to puncture a spoke hole in the sealed rim by accident (that's especially relevant as you come down to tiny x-section road tyres! You should see the hate over on GCN for tubeless (and discs lol).... )

What wasn’t mentioned about tubeless is that presta valves get clogged with sealant and won’t allow air inflow after a few months ,requiring replacement. And you still need to carry a tube and pump if you go tubeless because if you ding your rim, and the bead won’t seal , tubeless is useless. Less, can be not enough.
@embn
@embn Год назад
You don't necessarily have to replace clogged valves! You can remove the valve core and clean it with a pick, then push a 2mm allen key down the body of the valve to clean it out. You'll definitely have enough for air flow!

Ive had sharp rock slash my tubeless tire a few times (rear) had to put a tube anyway. I prefer tubeless rear and tubed front. I like changing front tire depending on conditions. Tubeless is great except when you flat!! If the tire walls stick into each other, sealant squirts or the valves clog is such a pain. Obviously tubeless in the rear is a must. Not up front where I very rarely flat. I prefer the feeling of the front tire with a tube, firmer, always been like freaked out of air burping out my front tire which has happened a few times and one sent me to the ground.

Sealant is fine until there is a 4-5mm slit from glass or a hole in the side wall, where there is a likely hood of defamation that opens up a slit. I've had a few of these over the years and the sealant just sprayed out. That's why I still carry a tube and a peice of fabric to stop the tube blowing out. I also carry a pump as I occasionally forget to replace the used CO2 cartridge.

Yesterday was my first ride after transitioning to tubeless...well, tyre is probably ruined, rim luckily survived. A bit of my fault, 28psi on 29x2.6, riding in a bit rocky trail. Didn't know one can have a snake bite on tubeless but there we go. Both holes are smaller than what guys did in the video however one of them holes is very close to the clincher. I'll try to patch it up today as sealant couldn't do it😢😢.

The mesquite thorns where I ride are like caltrops. Add to that the various other thorns, cacti and stones and my tires take a beating...Tubeless is the way to go! ..While I have had to put in some plugs after some particularly giant and vicious mesquite thorns, I have solved most of my 29er flats of tubeless tires with proper sealant...Not so successful are the 27.5 tires I have on another bike with standard wheels and tubes. I run sealant in the tubes or I would get nowhere fast on these thorny trails. But once a thorn gets in the tire it may puncture the tube over and over again until the air is out. In the end I have messy sealant smeared tubes and tires that I have to patch occasionally the old fashioned way.

I'm still using tubes, and will do so until I get my new Ebike hopefully this spring. Trying to sell my old Ebike so I can buy a different one, the trouble is the one I have now has been discontinued, and was from a company that has absolutely no support for their products in the first place. Definitely will convert to tubeless on the new bike, seems like a much easier and quicker solution to tubes, no disassembly required, and you can use plugs for larger punctures if needed, plus running the sealant in the tires will help too.

Twice I've had white gunk spray all over my arse, dropper post and rear of the frame when it couldn't seal a 2mm hole. Any sealant will seal a hole when there is no weight on it, that tells you nothing. Terrible stuff Peaty so don't try and fool the public. Even Stans fluid is better.
