TUBES or TUBELESS? What does your MTB really need?

Do your MTB wheels really need to be tubeless? Most of the need is based on how hard you ride, but there is another factor to consider - How often do you ride? Does your bike sit for long periods of time between rides? In my experience, tubeless wheels will lose all the air and the sealant will dry out if they sit for more than a couple of months. The average MTB rider might only ride their bike every few months on a trail. Are tubes better for the average rider knowing this?
Comment below if you prefer tubeless or tubed tires on your mountain bike.

I never had the problems you had. I have 2 hard tails and I went tubeless and never looked back. Had many punctures and the tires sealed up in minutes. But here's the, thing. Make sure your rims are tubeless compatible, tubeless tires, tubeless stems, tape, and proper sealant. I never walked up to my bikes and had flat tires. I’d like to emphasize the “want” vs “need” part of that statement. When you need tubeless and you don’t have it, you really really wish you did. I’ve burned through like 7 tubes in the last year because of needles, punch flats, and installing a new tire that was marginally too tight for the rim (also technically a pinch flat). It’s a struggle.

I like a hybrid setup. Tubeless up front tube in the back. I like the lower pressures and better puncture resistance for the tire that takes the most abuse when plowing through trails, but i like my back tire to have more pressure for better power transfer and lower rolling resistance wothout the hassle of tubeless.
@benjaminstevens4468
@benjaminstevens4468 Год назад
A tube adds an insane amount of rolling resistance, that’s the main reason why it improves your ride quality, with a tubeless setup. Depending on what you mean by “high pressure,” that also adds significant rolling resistance, over a low-moderate air pressure. When the tire deforms as it encounters rough surfaces it lets the wheel travel with less interruptions in its trajectory. Every time a higher pressure wheel hits an irregularity, in the surface, it has to climb up and over, all of which requires additional energy and in addition, increases the overall rotations that a high pressure wheel has to make in order to travel the same path as the lower pressure wheel.

I think with tubeless some things make a difference . First and foremost the tires and rims need to be tubeless compatible . Now you can setup non tubeless for tubeless but it's not going to hold air for a long time . I tried it and that's what happens to me going flat . Quality tires and thicker casings do make a difference . Of course your tubeless setup is critical and how it's setup . One flaw can be a problem . To do it yourself is a challenge at first like any bike mechanic operation but after a few trial and errors you figure it out .

If you're not slashing around corners and hitting it hard (you're on a budget bike channel, so the chances are more than likely this isn't you) then a tube is fine. Sorta like clip in road shoes. The only people that need them are sprinters. If you're a road biker though, they actually waste more energy than they help
