To use your Cyclo-cross analogy in mud, yes, I totally agree. I occasionally race CX and I have 2 sets of tyres. A mixed/dry terrain tyre (33mm wide) and a narrower mud tyre with aggressive deeper tread (31mmm wide) for sloppy conditions. Narrower in mud is much better. I only ride cross-country for flat bars so I don't tend to ride mountain bike in winter.

Great vid. Every ride has such a mix of surfaces, it's a compromise. I was always told "orange hard at the front, apple at the back" which I use on generally faster hard surface trail condition. But I typically run "Banana hard at the front and orange at the back" for more slippery squishy natch trails. On the hardtail in particular, having big tyres with an insert in the rear allows a soft rear end for super climbing progress and back relief on descending, without catastrophes.

Coming from a road bike beginning and weighing over 200 lbs, (I'm not telling how much over 200 lbs), I was used to 100-120 PSI for the smaller tires to avoid rim damage. Switching to MTB I saw 60 PSI on the tire, so that's what I did. Not a good experience. Lots of OTBs. Over the years I dropped my pressure 5 PSI at a time, then I saw a video of someone running 27 PSI. I comprimised at 35 PSI and what a difference. Roots and rocks seemed to vanish from the trail as the tire formed its way over them rather than bouncing into them and stopping altogether. Who knew? Apparently everyone but me. LOL

Love low pressures for roots, rocks & slick conditions, but hate the road/gravel transport to and from the trails. 80 kg 2,4 tires with 20 F and 24 B. 2,6 tires with 16 F and 18 B for maximum grip on wet roots 🤘

For mud it depends on the mud. If it's an inch or two of thin mud over a hard surface then 'cutting through' makes sense. If it's just mud, or water on top of mud, getting thicker as you go down and down, and down ... then cutting through means you're pedalling a plough.

I use continental double fighter 2.0’s on my hardtail. I will normally go 45 rear and 40 front on tarmac, on trails (light gravel) I will go 32 rear and 30 front. If it’s particularly wet on the trails I would normally switch out the tyres, but if I was going through mild/moderate mud I would drop again to 28 rear and 25 front

I've got a Schwalbe Nobby Nic on my bike (since years, was pretty happy with it for my terrain) with tubes. To what do you pump your Fat tires, i have the ChaoYang 26inch x 4" that came with my Vtuvia Gemini 26inch Ebike. Same thread as the tires in your video. These one's state 20PSI / 1.4bar max. Yet the Store where i bought my Ebike from says i must pump it up to 2bar or 2.1bar. I'm bit worried and asking others that have similar tires or experience.

I have a 'friend' who still runs tubes. How many psi would he add to a recommended tubeless pressure?

Im terrified of blowing my tires off the rim. Had really bad crashes on large hip landings and blowing the front tire off. Prob need inserts?

Aaahhhhh!! New MTBer here. Just bought a Polygon T7 a few weeks ago. I hit 1 bike park and switched to tubeless. I hit 3 more bike parks and noticed when i hit a berm my front tire feels like its going to wash out. It seems sketchy AF. I tried to make sure my weight is over the handle bars and it still does it. I wondered, is it the dirt thats lose? Im running 28psi in front and back. But i noticed when i squeeze the front brake and compress the forks my front tire seems squishy. So i wondered if my tire is deforming in the turns. After watching this video and hearing what your mate said at the end. Im starting to think this is the case. I weigh 180 to 185 pounds. I think the stock tires are 2.5 wide , theyre 27.5s 28psi seems high. Maybe i should try 30 front and back and see how that feels.

They tried to get us to go 'kilopascals' in Canada, but no one I know uses that unit, still like PSI KP: 6.89476kp = 1 PSI

Does the pressure matter on the tyre if it is tubeless or with an inner tube, same tire?

I have two bikes same rim size....one tyre casing psi guideline says 20-40 psi and the other says 40-80 psi...BIT CONFUSING THAT ? That's a vast difference. Any suggestion why....thanks. Jay

In this case, as a german, i prefer PSI because 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 PSI sounds much better then 1,8 / 1,9 / 2,15 bar :D

I'm guessing all this measurements are considering a tubeless setup, afaik, running tubes you need to use higher pressures

Did I missed it or did Doddy not mention about pressure difference between riding with inner tubes or without? I am not an expert but I heard that for the tyre pressure it makes significant difference.

I have an e-Bike, and I blew my tyre up, and it exploded. Now I'm afraid to blow it up. I have 20in wheels 1.95 tubes. I am going up to 30psi then too scared to go higher. Bike tyre says 800kpa which seems incredibly high, and I could never blow it up that far. Also my pump is hard to push down after 30psi. When I was aiming for 100psi the tyre exploded I don't understand where they got 800kpa from?

I am 89 kg but I lower my tire pressure of 34.5 or 34 psi just for a balance in the rear but my front is 30

Good video, Doddy! I struggle balancing support with grip, especially on plus sized tires. Also, coming from the Jeep off-road world, we have the opposite opinion regarding tire pressure and puncture resistance. Lower pressures tend to reduce likelihood of punctures because the rubber can deform more before tearing. Imagine trying to pop a fully inflated balloon vs a half-inflated balloon. The less inflated one will be harder to puncture. However, low pressures increase the chances of damaging a wheel or losing a bead.

Try inserts if you ride rocky tire slicing terrain
@fenderbenderspecial
@fenderbenderspecial 2 года назад
@@islandaerial3414 That's a good idea. I have a set in my lighter casing tires. They definitely help those feel more supportive while at lower pressures, while also adding some extra protection. I've considered getting some for my heavier wheel + tire set, but inserts are considerably more expensive than tinkering with air pressures haha. Someday I'll probably plunk down the cash, though.

Interesting...the smallest presenter had highest pressures.... tho good reasoning. Currently I ride at about 82kg, no inserts, 2.4 trail tyres... summer 27-25, winter 26-24 (R-F). Don't like to go lower for same reason as Neil. If I was hitting dirt jumps, 28-26.
