[Hello Sailor Effects](hellosailoreff...) How long can one man talk about 3 capacitors a d a few diodes? Well, evidently, 40 odd minutes ha!
Hello you fine people.
Welcome to my beginners tubescreamer mod video.
In this video I modify a Joyo Vintage Overdrive which is a cheap Chinese tubescreamer ts clone. These pedals sound really good prior to any mods.
If you want to hear a comparison of the modified and unmodified versions along with one of my handwired SRV variants, skip to minute 44:25.

Those are suprisingly decent-quality looking components and def pots in that pedal for a brand like Joyo- idk maybe Joyo is the top of the budget heap, Im not that familiar but I had assumed they were cookie-cutter Chinese pedals.

They kind of are cookie-cutter pedals, but I'm really surprised by the quality of them for the price. Definitely great candidates for mods. In fact I'm going to re do a mod video on this very pedal.

Great video, very informative. That said, the "vintage Soviet PIO capacitor in economy Chinese overdrive" mod is one of the silliest things ever committed to the historical record.

Thank you for the kind words. Really? How so? I put it to you that upgrading the components in here is actually more cost effective than if I was to build one in my regular style. The sounds results are also pleasing. All the best, Joe

@@hellosailoreffectsofficial Although they look pretty cool, paper-in-oil capacitors are strictly a downgrade with respect to modern spec components, and any perceptible sonic difference is going to be a result of capacitance drift rather than any intrinsic property of the component's dielectric substrate. I could see some argument for using NOS components in a vintage instrument for the sake of historical preservation, but the use-case you're presenting here is ludicrous.
@hellosailoreffectsofficial
@hellosailoreffectsofficial 4 месяца назад
Well I certainly wouldn't put a component into anything without checking it's exact value. Agreed there is likely no audible difference at this voltage, however: Have you considered the psychosomatic affect? I "know" the component is in there, it makes me feel good about the pedal, I feel good so I play better. "It's all in your head" I hear a lot, well my perception of the world is in my head so I'm good with that. If it feels real it Is real. Matrix anyone? Man I've got to say I love the debate. Please expand.

@@hellosailoreffectsofficial I like it better when you put it that way. Although I never thought that it was a bad idea, only that it was a funny idea. There's something perverse about it that's appealing. And I like the idea of "PIO capacitor in Joyo overdrive" more than "PIO capacitor in vintage TS-9."

So I got all the way to the end to see what it sounded like and the audio was not there for the test comparison. Why didn't you use lower voltage capacitors instead of those huge voltage ones?
@hellosailoreffectsofficial
@hellosailoreffectsofficial 4 месяца назад
Apologies, the rig for recording audio I had back then had its limitations. It seemed to work on certain interfaces, phones and computers but not others. Rest assured I have rectified this issue for the current videos i put out. Simply because I like the way they look. It's purely psychosomatic, I feel good knowing they are in there so I feel good about the pedal. This in turn makes me feel better when I play. I feel better so I play better. Thank you so much for watching along. Joe

Massive mate. When I first started out I had an LTD single cut with active pickups that sounded decent woth my ts into my first valve amp (Tiny Terror) but when I added a set of pafs to it everything became an instant icepick in the ear. I had to adjust everything about the rig to accommodate. It may well be that you don't need that.

That all depends on what diodes you used mate. There should be a large difference between germanium and silicon. Also if you have an on/off/on switch the centre position should be much louder. What diodes did you use?

How can i tell what dipdes i should be buying for these mods. Am i looking for specific multimeter readings or does it just matter the type (i.e. germanium)
@hellosailoreffectsofficial
@hellosailoreffectsofficial 5 месяцев назад
Hello mate, Personally, I buy several different types of diodes and try them out in circuit. The standard would be 1n1418 silicon diodes that have a forward voltage of 0.7v. As a rule of thumb the higher the voltage the more clarity you get (something like an LED or several silicon in series). Germanium tends to feel softer as it has a lower forward voltage of around 0.3v. For me I like to try lots of combinations before settling on a sound. Joe

@hellosailoreffectsofficial
@hellosailoreffectsofficial 4 месяца назад
