Longtail Tubular Cast On for both 1X1 and 2X2 Ribbing worked in the round.
NO waste yarn required for this cast on!
NOTE: In order to create 2X2 ribbing (K2, P2), you have to first do a set-up for 1X1 (K1,P1) ribbing. This is just how it all works out. So please don't get frustrated when watching the video. We have to do one before we can do the other. ;)
There ARE some other ways to do a tubular cast on for Ribbing but this is MY personal preference. I am not saying this method is better than others. It's just the method I like the best. I hope you agree! If not, that's okay. Differences are what make the world go round, especially in the Knitting world.
Enjoy! :)

I just cast on 100 sts for a top-down raglan sweater. Whenever I cast on a lot of sts, I do about 4 rows before joining in the round. That makes it much easier to join without getting your sts twisted. Then you just have to sew up the tiny 4-row gap when you're done. Thank you for this great tutorial. I've done the tubular CO many times, and yet I need a reminder every time!

I've seen so many tutorials for this cat on and have never been able to do it. Because you take the time to go slow and don't assume we even know how to do a magic cast on, I was able to actually follow. Now I know I'm not the only one who finds it awkward to startbut that a little patience will pay off in the end. Thank you! Now I can throw away the waste yarn start I've been using. Yay!

This is the best video for a twisted 1x1 rib long tail tubular cast on in the round. In this video, the cast on for a purl stitch is done differently from normal instructions. She goes under both strands first, then over the tail and under the working yarn. Most of the others go under the working, over the tail, then under both. Doing it that way, however, results in your purl stitches being twisted if you immediately go in the round instead of knitting flat for 2 rows. So the version in this video is better. Immediately going to the round also has your initial knit stitches twisted. If your knit regularly, they will untwist. But if you ktbl, they remain twisted so you can have a really seamless twisted 1x1 rib.

Thank you for this great tutorial. When switching from 1x1 to 2x2 rib, rather than slipping the purl stitch right off and holding it, if you put the needle into both the purl and the knit stitch following, as if to knit two together, and slide onto the right needle, it switches the stitches. Then you can quickly slip the two back onto the left needle without having to hold one in your fingers. It does mean that the stitches are facing the wrong way, so the knit and then the purl will have to be worked from the back. But it is quicker.

Loved this video. I needed all the extra help you gave and for me, this was the perfect length with the perfect amount of information. You have really done new tubular cast on knitters a service - and nowhere anywhere have I seen the extra twist being placed into the first knit "slip knot type" stitch, which makes it really match the other stitches. Thank you!

Very helpful tutorial! The hat pattern I am trying to follow had very confusing instructions. This tutorial was easy to follow and will help me make a great start to my project. The look and stretchiness of the finished edge is much better than a simple long tail cast on that I would have used otherwise. Thanks!

I really have to thank you for this great tutorial. i finally got the tubular cast on in 2x2 ribbing. i had trouble at first, letting the stitches ``slide`` around on me but once i secured them properly with my right hand fingers that solved the problem. i also had trouble NOT twisting my stitches which I never have until this cast on. It`s pretty tricky so I recommend not to slide them down quickly to start your first round as I normally do, but rather go slooooowly. everything else was easy peasy. thank you!

Excellent video thanks! I always hated doing long tail cast on for rib as it just wasn't a nice look, nor stretched enough in my opinion. I always got confused with the provisional cast on version of a tubular cast on. Using waste yarn, then doubling the stitches then having to add an extra one (I think), it was like krypton factor knitting! I felt like I needed an engineering degree! Thanks so much! I'm off to start practicing this for my Selbu hat!

Thanks for this great tutorial! It is especially helpful when you show how to convert to the 2 x 2 rib. My question is this: I did this cast on with straight needles and plan to knit on DPN, so I need to divide my stitches first. Should I convert to the 2 x 2 rib first, or divide my stitches first and then join in the round by converting to the 2 x 2? Does my question even make sense? Thank you for any advice!
@sukubo313
@sukubo313 8 лет назад
Personally, I would divide first, then twist your stitches as you come to them when knitting the first row. Otherwise, you'll have to go through an extra round just to twist the stitches.

Help!! How do you join the rounds? The video says that you start the double knitting with the "slip" stitch or the first cast on. In order do this I had to alternate my needles and my work does not end up joining after completing first round of double knitting...what am I missing?? I cannot figure it out from the video. I have to cast on 120 stitches for a hat and this is a tedious process. Does anyone know of an easier cast on that is stretchy?

You have to be careful with each stitch you cast on, and make sure that the two yarns cross each other at the bottom. You can't rush it.

Great video! However, after the cast on and two set up double knitting rows, when I went to start my 1X1 rib, all my knit stitches were oriented wrong (back leg more forward than front leg). Any idea why that happened? Thanks!
@iesika7387
@iesika7387 2 года назад
Whenever I try this using magic loop the last stitch of the first half of the first row (last stitch before the join) just sort of undoes itself and disapppears when I slip the stitch in front of it. It turns into a double twist of the yarn instead of a stitch. What the heck, this has happened SIX TIMES NOW. Honestly just threw my needles across the room and almost threw the computer too

Question. Does this type of cast on leave that funny "gap" when you fist start in the round? I habitually do a long tail cast (taught by Grams, she called it sling shot) but I am trying to improve my techniques, and this really looks easy. With long tail, I do the extra stitch to my cast on and then slip the last over the first and drop the first to eliminate the gap. That obviously won't work with this, and I really hate the gap.
@JeenieJolie
@JeenieJolie 9 лет назад
OH by the by, it seems you missed a step! (on long tail cast on that is, I'm a rookie on this method as well) Once you slip the stitch over, you would have to pull both the tail from the first stitch you cast on AND the left over yarn from the very last stitch
@BerlinerinToni
@BerlinerinToni 8 лет назад
Hi, this question is actually about your 1x1 Tubular Cast-on video - I would post it there, but comments are disabled on that particular video. :( When you get to the second row after the cast-on in that video, it's done pretty much the same way you do it in this video - you slip the knit stitches, and purl the purl stitches. However, that swatch is NOT done in the round, as this one is - it's knitted flat. If I'm not mistaken, since you'd just knitted the knit stitches and slipped the purl stitches on the first row after the CO, aren't you slipping the exact same stitches again that you had just slipped in the previous row? my understanding is that in double-knitting, you need to knit (or otherwise work) every other stitch on one side, slipping those in between, and then on the other side, you work the stitches that HADN'T been worked on the previous row. So, in other words, when knitting flat, I think you should continue slipping the P stitches all the way around, since those are the backs of the same stitches you had just knitted on the other side. But, instead, you slipped the K stitches on the 2nd row. I get the impression that maybe you are used to working this technique in the round, and you just forgot that when you got to that second row - am I right? Or, have I missed something? I hope all of this makes sense. I am not trying to be critical; I need to make a hat in 1x1 rib with a tubular cast-on, and I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything, and that I'm not doing it wrong. Excellent videos, BTW - the best ones I have seen yet for tubular cast-ons. Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks for this. One question: do I cast on half the number of stitches called for since I'll be doubling up on the next two rows? I believe that I only cast on half the number. And, for joining in the round, I usually cast on one additional stitch to form the join but I don't see that you mention this so it's not needed here? Thanks in advance for your response!
@KalurahHudson
@KalurahHudson 7 лет назад
Eric Sanders Nope, no doubling of cast on needed. This is a different method from that. You can actually use this method on ANY pattern that requires a cast on number that is divisible by 2. :)

I have tried and tried and tried. Can someone please recommend an alternative 2x2 tubular for knitting in the round. It’s just not clicking with me. One that doesn’t use the converting at the end. I’m just not grasping this in the least.
@Whiletheyplay
@Whiletheyplay 2 года назад
To my knowledge there’s no way to cast on a tubular cast on without first working 2 rounds of 1x1. It’s just the nature of the tubular cast on. However, you can do a provisional cast on with waste yarn and work all your rounds of 2x2 rib but work it twice as long and fold the ribbing in half and hem it. It will appear double-thick and will give a similar tubular edge. I hope this helps!

Obviously you don't realize that when you do a tubular cast on, it is done in 1 x 1 ribbing, THEN converted to 2 X 2, with that being said, there still isn't any reason to be so obnoxious to someone who is offering instruction and giving their time, to those of us who are thankful. This is an excellent video with thorough instruction.
