Vintage Guitar magazine had an article about Tuck's technique this month, so I stopped by some of their videos to refresh my appreciation. As great as they sound, I think that if you are not a guitar player it would be difficult to understand just how excellent and intricate his playing is. Of course Patti is great as well, and the whole is even greater than the sum of the outstanding parts. If you're interested in the technical aspects of how Tuck creates that music, I direct you to Wolf Marshall's analysis in Vintage Guitar Vol 34 No 5.
I saw Jimi 4 times (yup...I'm getting up there), but THIS...is without a doubt the best cover of his classic. Tuck is amazing....simply superb. And Patti's soul makes this heart wrenching. Simply amazing.
So very fortunate. This is how I got introduced to this song. Like the late Stevie Ray Vaughan introduced me to Voodoo Child. I was spooked as a toddler by him. The Montreux Pop Festival when he set his guitar on fire did it. Coupled with a bad dream and All Along The Watchtower playing in it. Happy to say I'm a huge Hendrix fan since university. I own not only his recordings but numerous tribute albums like Gil Evans Plays Hendrix, an orchestral jazz masterpiece.
This is my first time hearing and seeing this version. Patti's voice and musical expression are so moving. Tuck is my inspiration for expression on the guitar, hands-down. What a gift to us that these two bumped into each other. :)
Years ago (1991?), bumped into Tuck & Patti at the Big Sur General Store as they were taking a few of hours off of recording for the day. Really nice folks!~
it's funny people say Polyphia guitar player kind of invented some new guitar playing since I see this guy here doing, even better, pretty much all their stuff and the post is from 12 years ago 👍
What a magnificent rendition of this Jimi Hendrix son. Patti makes you feel each story as if you were the experiencers. Chilling Jazz Duo. Tuck's playing that magnificent guitar flowing right along with his wife's melodious mellow voice. What a Gem shared with me, after a busy day. I thank you. ;-) To the poster Thanks for doing so. My Warrior angel found it and sent it my way just on time.
Great version for a great song and when I remember that Jimi, besides being the composer (of lyrics and songs), singer and rythm guitar player of the themes, played improvisations, differents for each presentation, with live versions being different from those played in the studio, with all then being innovative: tones, mixing, forms of playing, costumes etc Well, I'm speechless, so it's better I shut up and let the music play :)
