I was a nurse before I went to medical school and became a physician. Once as a nurse, when I told a patient that an Agiotensin Receptor Blocker would work the same as their Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitor, without the side effects that they were having: I got pulled into the medical directors office and told that was "practicing medicine without a license" and I may need to be written up for that. As a nurse,...with a degree, and very clearly within my scope of practice to explain medications to patients. So if a friggin registered nurse can get in trouble, and lose their license for practicing medicine without a license. How in the holy hell is it ok for politicians who dont have a single solitary clue about what they are talking about. They should at least be able to explain the differents between an ACEi and an ARB, whether or not they are safe in pregnancy and why or why not....because an EMT could tell you that. Stop encroaching in areas of scholarship that you have NO CLUE about, and leave it to those of us that do. Finding one old dusty retired cardiologist to talk about the ONE D&E he saw in medical school is useless. Especially if you are just going to have him emotionally manipulate people with gory explanations and conveniently leave out the fact that the procedure he was talking about was done because the fetus died. Should a bunch of doctors get together and regulate how lawyers practice law? Stay away from our patients, our hospitals, and our clinical decision making. Unless you are currently board certified and actively practicing in the field being discussed: nobody cares what somebody is paying you to say. And from now on, when we need to make decisions about entire fields: stop accepting a single expert...there are outliers in EVERY data set. If 99% of us agree on sometbing, stop finding that 1% in the tin foil hat and parading them in front of congress as if they matter. PANEL OF EXPERTS.
