Enclosing land was a real social issue involving foreign trade, the rights of the common man and the creation of modern Britain. In this one I specifically look at enclosing during the Tudor period and some of the effects it had on society.

The 'c' in "mercantile" is pronounced like a 'k' and not like an 's'.

This is such an important part of our history. This makes up the first accumulation and the development of landless proletariat

I highly recommend reading De Bourgondiërs van Bart Van Loo! It’s about the importance of Flanders and how the netherlands were formed and it also explains the cloth trade with England. (It’s in Dutch/ Vlaams)

History With Hilbert spent the weekend in York. Iv seen a lot of Norse,Roman and Saxon things here it's been very interesting to see how the city has changed over the 1 thousand odd years it's been here.

Hi Hilbert, I realise I'm about 7 years late but I don't quite understand the rent-raising thing at 6:10 - why were there less workers on the remaining arable land, and why did the landowners raise the rent on it when they had already been faring well with the lower rents before (especially with the added income of enclosure)? Thanks

Difficult question, it sometimes depends on what I'm feeling at the time, although I'd probably go with the early Viking Age and what came before in parts of the European Migrations :)

A brief overview of the propaganda created to justify enclosure would have made a good addition - (I'm primarily thinking about the Tragedy of the Commons).

ENCLOSURES: THE BIRTH OF CAPITALISM -- Some seem to think that capitalism is just any sort of market-based economy. But that can't be; we had markets before capitalism. There's more to it than that. Capitalism is a system built on the relationship between those who own the property and control the means of production (the people who provide capital), and those who don't (the people who provide labor). That relationship began when land owners ejected the people who worked their land, built walls and gates around their land, and then invited people to enter their land temporarily in order to provide labor for wages. Enclosures are the beginning of capitalism.

I was a bit of a joke I had with my ex that whenever we'd have a political discussion that she'd inevitably somehow get to the point of blaming everything on the enclosures. And tbh it was funny but she's not wrong.
