I did get the Alinghi almost a year ago. The wait for the original FXD Titanium was long, and when they announced Carbon Composite, I made a decision to get one. I already have a Pelagos 39, and that stays on the bracelet. I like the Alinghi blue dial. I have other black dial, black bezel watches. Months after getting the Alinghi, my dealer did call me when the Titanium black arrived, but I’m perfectly happy with the Alinghi. Reviewers went bonkers over the rehaut inscription, but when I saw it in person, it’s barely distinguishable from the seconds. The Carbon seems as scratch proof as anything I’ve experienced. 11 months, and I can’t find a scratch on it, and I’m not very kind to this watch. No matter what I wear, when I get home, the FXD goes on my wrist. Comfortable. Durable.

So true about the rehaut, we're over exposed to beautiful macro shots of every watch release over and over on YT, you have to see any watch your interested in in person to really make your mind up.

Wishing they would add a date version of the fxd or pelagos 39. The no date and the blunt hour hands are the only things holding me back from getting a tudor in my collection, but the blunt hour hand is slowly starting to be acceptable hehe

Just received mine yesterday and was immediately plunged into a wife and kids disturbing blackout due to lightning taking out a transformer and 200sq kms of hydro. Loss of electricity around here also equates to no running water as soon as the local generator runs out of fuel. Needless to say I was frantically filling receptacles for drinking water and filling the bath tub for flushing the toilet. Once full the bathtub was leaking so I had to fashion an improvised plug with plastic wrap and butter knives. I must say I was somewhat apprehensive as I plunged my very first luxury watch into the bathtub to a depth of 0.25meters.😊 The FXD performed flawlessly and the lume was long lasting and greatly appreciated. Once the tub was effectively plugged and all available receptacles full, including four 20L Jerry cans, I sat back in the pitch darkness a sweaty mess and changed out the soaked strap for a dry nato I had on hand and was thoroughly satisfied with my new FXD. I think it’s fair to say it’s Gen.X dad approved.

I have an MN21 that I have beat around for years now. It's the best mechanical tool watch ever made. For perspective, I also have a White Gold Submariner but the Tudor is simply functionally better. The legibility on this watch is so good that it actually surpasses the functionality of a digital display because the time can be read at all angles at a glance. I'm not sure I've ever see another mechanical watch where the dial is so close to the crystal. I have a countdown timer, while yours is a traditional dive bezel but regardless it's a crisp and easy to use functional timer. The bezel is very sharp and grippy, so if you ever do use it in water or with gloves (diving) it's a dream. The lume is phenomenal. It is very long lasting and you can actually read it in the middle of the night. The titanium makes it light and it's certainly durable, although it will scratch up. The movement has been great for me. Very accurate and no issues. It's a lifetime piece for me. I don't have a big collection: White Gold Sub (Cookie Monster), OP Celebration, IWC Ingy Aqua, FXD, and G-Shock 5600 but this watch firmly sits as my beater, and what a handsome beater it is. I'd only really recommend the watch to people who want to really use it though. I think there are better options for a versatile diver. I recently got to try the new BB41 Monochrome and it is spectacular. I highly recommend that for those looking for a more versatile option.

I’m glad you mentioned the downside to wearing a bracelet at the beach. I always considered how hot and “heavy” the bracelet would feel when at the beach, but I never really considered how sand could get between the links and grind away. Thanks!
@wayneholmes637
@wayneholmes637 Месяц назад
Another consideration is security against having a watch snapped off your wrist. A bracelet is held together by a bucket full of little pins any of which can fail. A proper milspec NATO strap only weak point is the buckle pin (a genuine NATO strap is welded not sewn and has no springbars) as opposed to the around 18 pins on my Citizen bracelet.

Just to let you know, watch collecting is a lifelong hobby and tons of fun. The best advice I can share is buy what you can afford and enjoy wearing, and you will never go wrong -- even as your tastes will change. Equally important, if you are married, include your wife in the hobby by buying her watches, and she will support your watch collecting habit!

I have moved on from the FXD MN to the OG blue Pelagos mostly due to the bracelet and I like the brighter blue. The FXD's hands are very close to the crystal making for a much better read angle when underwater. The MN had a bi-directional bezel and since I use the bezel to time things every day I will always miss this feature on all my other divers. Something I couldn't have known without handling and FXD prior to buying (I'm in a small town with no ADs) is with my failing eyes the fully graduated bezel made it difficult if not impossible for me to clearly see zero at a glance. I may have waited for a blue 39 but above all I love the matte ceramic bezel of the OG and FXD, really as you stated the the lack of any polish anywhere on the Pelagos is key.
@stevesaka8191
@stevesaka8191 3 дня назад
I absolutely love my black FXD - super legible, massively durable, is trim thickness wise, sits great on the wrist, is lightweight titanium, a lume beast, very accurate and by changing the strap I can go from subtle to eye popping - I wear it most often on elastic single pass CNS Paratrooper straps or an Octopod system strap - I spend a lot of time in rural Latin America for work, it has become my "go to" over the past year. It works as a field watch with skin diver properties and if I stick with tamer straps it totally flies under the radar which is why I prefer the black over the blue, and imo is the best true tool in my collection - no, it is not for everyone, definitely not ideal for the one-watch person, there is no way to dress it up and if you hate "nato" style straps, it is pretty much a no go, but for my use case it is fantastic. Nice to see this watch starting to get some love from reviewers like yourself and a few others. Always appreciated the BB, but imo the Pelagos line is Tudor at its best - a true modern and unique redesign of the quintessential tool watch. I have been a Pelagos devotee for years, actually my LHD was my "work watch", but the FXD has stolen its glory. One last thing I would add: do not dismiss this watch based on it dimensions or the initial impression takes of most reviewers, imo you really need to try this watch for yourself to understand it. You will notice that the people that actually own and use it are often as effusive with their love for this watch like myself. Once again, love the content Mike!
@wingi7722
@wingi7722 Месяц назад
Excellent stuff! Love the way you talked about your decision making process. So one of my grail for a over year has been the Tudor FXD Alinghi Red Bull Chronograph - I absolutely love the colour scheme, the FXD aspect, the ruggedness, the size (43.5mm), the functionality and the lume. But never saw one in person as I live in New Zealand. I was in Japan recently and finally got to see one in person and it was an incredibly good price. I walked away from it, told my wife and she told me that I should have grabbed it. Well upon my return to NZ I bought it online! Fantastic - apart from the strap which although being beautiful, is just too small! So it's a strap monster and gets a lot of wrist time. Footnote: - I do hit the water a lot (particularly underwater) - although I'm more likely to use my SteelDive GMT Master as it's way cheaper - my adventures can sometimes a little rough on watches - rock, crawling along stony river or sea bottoms underwater etc) but the fact that it CAN go underwater If I need to is reassuring. Also: The Red Bull branding is very subtle and you'd have to go looking for it, so it's not a problem for me.

The FXD is the first Tudor that speaks to me (maybe also the North Flag). I have been using the same watch for my summer vacation for the last maybe 30 years. The Citizen Promaster JP2000. It's my ultimate beater and I still love how it looks.
@Anirossa
@Anirossa 20 дней назад
The old citizen promaster model also has the vertical play in the beezle, from what I've gathered is it made to be loaded outwards in this way with the slight space so it will continue to function, even if there is a build-up of salt or debres that can get in while diving.

Hope you had a nice holiday. My holiday watch is a Sinn EZM 3. I put some fat bars without shoulders in it that I have to cut out, but I don't need to, because I love to wear it with Natos (especially at sea and the risk of breaking a spring bar). Very similar to the Tudor with its sand blasted case and black dial with only a little bit of glossy red (that I love!). Slim case (12,4mm) despite soft iron cage and a decent 47 mm L2L. And at around 2k€ you can even wear it light hearted when using power tools or working on the car/motorcycle. Might be an alternative when you're done with the Tudor. Great review btw, and a great channel!

I had the Pelagos 39, and still have the Sinn U50 (THE best tool watch!). I get the love for your version, thankfully does not have a Titanium bracelet, which was very noticeably bad on the 39. BUT as a designer, look at the 10 on the bezel... OMG, for me it's once seen, never unseen, yes other bezels do this, (the 39mm doesn't show the 10) but since the other numbers only have 3 places around each number why put 4 each side of the 10. Type hell... But glad you got it and love it, enjoy!

Dear Mike, I was actually one of you fans that spotted your FXD in one of your earlier videos and left a comment :-) Thank you for your review and for laying out your considerations between the four divers! I am an owner of the FXD Marine Nationale. It's the watch that has received the most wrist time in the last one and a half years. I especially appreciate the lume. I cannot compare it with any Seikos (as I have never owned one) but this Pelagos has the best lume I have come across so far. Keept up your great content! You are my most favorite watch RU-vidr!

Great video as always Mike. Just curious why you didn’t consider the CW60 Trident Pro 300? Btw, congrats on the Pelagos! Amazing watch.

I was going to buy a Tudor BB, but I went for Longines Zulu Time instead, mostly due to Tudor's QC issues and thick cases. Perhaps I'll pull the trigger on future models.

Don’t own one personally & I agree they may be a bit “ boring” but also they epitomise “wearable”. Great choice👍makes a lot of sense. (I personally like titanium, black faced watches too!)

I just bought the FXD Alinghi version and yes I was concerned with the Red Bull text but it completely disappears and is subtle enough to be almost imperceptible. Great watch, super lightweight, tough and under the radar.

Solid review of the process. Welcome to the Tudor team and the Pelagos family in particular. The 39 for me. 💯 - great for work or play.

Mike, T4YC: Great watch. The FXD MN is a real beauty. The colours are reminiscent of vintage Tudor Subs. A kind of slightly washed out blue. With stunning blue lume. This is my beater, along with my Pelagos LHD. Plus Tudor's titanium is a beautiful grey colour. My favourite titanium by far.

The black version is very nice. I’m kind of glad that when I bought my MN22 there only was the blue - the blue is amazing, but the black is definitely “safer” as well as going well with more color straps 🤷‍♂️ good problem to have 😃 Do you live in, and buy most watches in, South Africa?

Solid choice. Not fan of the Invicta style case engraving of the Blancpain case. Was the Sinn U50 Hydro at some stage in the list of options ?

Just to echo what others have said, you get mad props for the Anakin Skywalker reference! Great thorough review of the Tudor Pelagos FXD. I have a number of titanium watches and I always thought I was not necessarily hearing the rotor but feeling it more due to the relative difference in mass between the rotor and lighter titanium case versus a heavier steel case.

Enjoy your new watch. My summer watch is the Seiko Dolce SACM 151 with a Forstner Komfit "astronaut" strap. I think the ventilated non-leather strap is rather more important than the watch in hot weather...

It's a lovely watch you've bought. I usually prefer retro-styled watches, like the Black Bay 58, etc , but with Tudor, I like the Pelagos more. This watch has a great toolish functionality and simplicity about it that I really like. As to summer watches, I'll take the G-Shock Mud Master I bought in January on holiday and when I'm at home, I'll mostly be wearing the Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic I just bought. And my trusty Tudor Ranger will get plenty of wrist time too.

Now that is a nice acquisition Mike! It would have been very hard for me to pick between the Sinn or this but I think you have a stunning dive watch now! This really is a strap monster indeed! Perhaps the sound is due to the density of the material. Titanium grade 5 comes in at 4.43 g/cc where 316L SS is 8.0 g/cc. Just dont wear that around Jozi. You WILL get robbed depending on where you go. Even Sandton isnt safe these days. Take care man and have a great weekend!

Like the T-shirt you keep even though you have holes under the arms. If it’s not too invasive please show us how you organize your strap collection. I assume you can switch out your NATO straps among your watches

Thank you for the great content. I placed an order for the CW Bel Canto Red One, and was wondering about your thoughts regarding collaboration between influencers and watch makers. Thank you again for great work
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Месяц назад
I think it's good marketing. Both for the influencer and the watch brand. Whether or not the collabs are meaningful in a design sense? Probably not. I remember many years back when Range Rover designed an Evoque "by Victoria Beckham" and sure - she's a stylish woman, but I did question what she actually brought to the table in terms of substantively changing the design of the car, bar asking for an extra cup holder... If IWC reaches out to me, I'd love to give input on the kind of Pilot Chrono or Ingenieur I would like designed, but I am not a designer so at the end of the day it will likely just be a different coloured dial 😀😀

I own the P39, and the only thing I don’t like about it is the difference in colour between the hands and the indices. The hands look a bit yellowish under certain light conditions. Is it something that happens also in the FXD, or is it something that Tudor have fixed?

Nice Tudor, congrats. My summer no 1 surprisingly is the JDM Citizen PMD56-2951, a simple titanium Promaster with green dial. It's light, not too boring and wears great in summer heat on a beige Perlon strap (which by the way you can get now with matte finishing!). And even though its radio control is Japan only, it works with iPhone app which simulates the signal perefectly :)
