Tug Boat Working the Miami River at Night (Lightning Storms)

Miami River Towing operates three Tugs on the Miami River. Today we jump aboard the Sara with Captain Morgan and like he said "I'm gonna take you for a ride ".
Working the Miami River at night is not like the day its a completely different story. These crews have very minimal work spaces and manage to get these hug ships controlled in the tightest spaces. The very first challenge we faced was a very expensive Yacht docked right in the path of the Cargo ship the Sara was going to be tailing.
My name is Alfred Montaner Host of the Chit Show and I'm honored to showcase the team at Miami River Towing on tonights trip. Its a long video but I wanted you to experience it like I experienced it !
Big shout of to all the people who work the Miami River and we even got a guest appearance from Fred the tail Captain of the Atlas tug boat from Hempstead Marine.

Alfred, I am an old Englishman almost 80 and loved boating in my younger days. I was privileged to be able to cyber-travel the Miami River with you in your inflatable boat video, and now I watched this Tug-boat operation, I thoroughly enjoyed that trip too and really appreciate an experience that would not be possible without you. When you see Captain Morgan again, please thank him sincerely on behalf of a viewer from across The Atlantic Ocean for allowing you to film the work of the tugboat crews. He is such a calm gentleman. When he said his tug would be the follower, I was surprised when the ship was tugged backwards. I thought the ship was facing in the direction it was going to travel. Thanks again for going to the trouble to make all of your videos.

It’s great to get a tour of Miami from the river point of view, and some general knowledge of tugboat operations. But for some of us that are thoroughly interested in the mechanics, the forces, the timing, the tides and the momentum we would love to see some more of a throttle work, and how turns are initiated whether he splitting the Throttles, pushing, or pulling to achieve desired turn, and the timing applied such forces.

Old school REAL tug boating !! My first paying job was on a tug in Georgetown SC. A Consolidated , 1945 YTB with a Fairbanks - Morse direct reversible engine. And it gets better .. I was taught how to answer bells , buzzes and jingles ! Only an old school Tug - Boater would know what that means. Our tug manager and docking master was Capt. Morgan too! Not the Morgan in this video but , Capt. James Morgan Futch. Awesome video , real skills, throw rocks at those tractor tugs !

I've been around boats most of my life, learned a lot about power boats, learned to sail, and bought a nice power boat to live aboard for several years. I was glued to my laptop for every single second of this amazing video. And the deck hands - everyone was on point, and safety first. Major respect for Captain & crew.

Congratulations Alfred on one of the most extraordinary pieces of content you've ever produced. This video is worthy of serious recognition as a work of modern art. The camera work was visually dramatic, with the juxtaposition of the Miami skyline, the lightning, and the huge ship threading its way through the narrow channel. Captain Morgan portrayed as a maestro at the controls, the master of his domain and a true hero powering the engine of the American economy. I truly admire your innovation in pioneering new ways for your viewers to explore and understand the world we live in. You are the best and getting better every day.

The craziest thing is that I've always been looking at all the videos of miami rivers and canals here in Brazil, and Sara has always been my favorite boat, of course there are the most wonderful, expensive, technological and brilliant ones in these waters, but Sara , for me there is something that enchants me, a "worker" who circulates among those full of lights, music, empty and futile people. I really admire your work and your "home". Today I come across this video, Alfred, thank you so much for this wonderful gift and for valuing the presence of these guys, their work and these boats (invisible to most people) so important and incredible!

Great bit of steerage by Capt. Morgan, would loved to have heard his words a bit clearer but hey you work with what you've got, so thanks a bunch for that. Was amazed to see those old ships awaiting scrapping I presume on what must be very expensive real estate. I also watch TimBatsea he's a New York tug captain who specialises in pushing refuelling barges, now he has several VLOGS explaining tows pushes, alongside and assists, tides and wind. All put over in an easy to understand way. Always great to see the workings of the river and how commerce is handled. thanks a lot for that, stay safe.

Alfred, I discovered your videos a while back. I was on the fence at first , but ultimately decided I liked the content. You have evolved and gotten better. When you spoke here about how it took off, I could hear in your voice the humble disbelief. None of us out here on the internet know who the man Alfred is. But I know you have brought me laughs and amusement. I live only a little to the north in the West Palm area and my teenage years and early twenties were spent on charter boats. I made Captain and enjoyed it. My life took a different direction and now my hobby is my hobby again and not my job. It’s worked for me. I’m glad this is working for you. If you read this, stay humble, stay true to you and keep doing what your doing because it works. A thanks to Captain Morgan as well for letting us all share the wheelhouse. I know how territorial skippers can be and he seems kind. It was a pleasure watching every minute. Fair winds and following seas.

This brings back memories of when we, Hyde Shipping, were on the Miami River right next to Antillean where you are taking the Babun Express from. We were on the River from 1976 till 1994 when after our ships got too big and it was too difficult to take them up and down the river, we then moved up to Port Everglades. I remember after we loaded our ships, Hybur Intrepid, Hybur Clipper, Argosy and Odosy, Backus Towing had to pull them off the bottom to get them into the center of the river as the shoulders were very shallow and as we loaded the ships, they sat on the bottom. They also had to tow them down River as the tide was going out and up river as the tide was coming in. This made it very difficult to keep a schedule. Now we are up at Port Everglades and our ships come in and go out when they need to. Thanks for taking down memory lane.

I (Rob) use to work in the River back in the winter of 1976/77 for Ebsary Foundation Co. they had two little tugboats one of which we had at Lehigh Portland Cement company out on route 27 past the Palmetto Expressway in Meldley. We had two tugboats out there pushing rock barges 24 hrs a day between the Draglines loading them and the Clamshell unloading them at the crusher… anyway I worked on that River back then, watching all that crazy stuff with the tail tug doing all the wild work. Crazy Crazy action on that River..!!! It has changed so much since then I didn’t recognize it, but we were just past one of those bridges on the left going out east bound… Great Stuff..!!😎👍👏👌
