Hyde Healy of American High Shorts joins the boys to talk about family, growing up in the South, and what it’s like working for one of the top sketch groups in the country. Lucas shares a story about road-tripping through Jackson, Mississippi, in a fully-loaded Land Rover he earned through hard work from ages 16-19. Meanwhile, Jamie drills down to learn more about Hyde’s dad and his roots in Natchez, Mississippi.

It's so interesting that an attitude makes such a difference to how you learn from a trip. I realised that not by road tripping or going on a mission trip, but by driving around my home region with a different attitude and learning so much about a place I would have thought I already knew. It's the people with you that can make a town or a beach or a rest stop feel completely new, whether they are the ones teaching you or whether you are showing them around. Also, the word roadtrip rang a bell in my brain and I was trying to remember why and realised it was a 2014 German RU-vidr thing where they replaced one of the letters with a 7 (you won't guess which one) for the 7 people on the Roadtrip and they drove around Europe and vlogged the shit out of it. I mean, it was no Highly Laffeinated tour, but it was pretty iconic at the time.

Jamie had to prove his dominance by showing Hyde that he knows more about Lucas than him and also more than Lucas himself.

There's nothing like looking at real estate listings to take the romance out of the idea of living in the big cool city. Do I want to have a room that's basically a closet with a shared kitchen and borderline unliveable bathroom that's somehow still nowhere near the parts of the city I actually came for or do I want to have a newly renovated house with a garden to myself here? The answer is neither because I'm not spending that kind of money, but it's still a good reality check.

Okay but what happened to episodes 9 and 13 on this podcast... it would be wild to me if they deleted any episodes given some of the shit they've said on other ones lmao

Welcome to the podcast, pizza time! There are probably some episodes missing because they got deleted (I know of at least one), but they also were just sort of bad at counting in the beginning and I think sometimes did the same number twice, so I wouldn't give it too much thought. That doesn't really happen anymore. Although if you started at episode one, I definitely understand the confusion of what could be more deletable. Have fun going through the archives! There's definitely a lot to discover. (And even more on Patreon!)

If you thought studying hospital management was niche, you weren't ready for the two full maritime lawyers. He must have the most interesting random fact knowledge.

The history of German Jewish last names is actually super interesting. Jewish people in Europe could basically choose their last names when they were forced to get them during assimilation in the pursuit of getting equal rights and eventually citizenship. They didn't develop organically. In some areas, the names weren't allowed to be obviously Jewish to not other Jews and forcefully prioritise their national over their ethnic and religious identity, which was true for Austria, for example. Germany wasn't one country at the time, so there isn't one German rule. Austria excluded names that were more obvious references to scripture like Noah, Levi or Ezra. There were, however, also less obvious references like Baum, which literally means tree and stands for Abraham as the root of the family tree, or Stein (rock) for Isaac. Some animal last names were based on the twelve tribes of Israel, like anything with Löwe (lion), Hirsch (stag) or Wolf (wolf, obviously). The same applies to a lot of colours (like Roth (red) or Schwarz (black)) and gemstones like Bernstein (amber), Diamant (diamond) and Rubin (ruby). Gold and Silber (silver) are different, they are based on the archangels Gabriel and Michael. Another group of names are plants and foods like Weintraub (grape) and Feigenbaum (fig tree), which grow in the holy land. There are also house names, which were created in cities with Jewish areas where symbols were used as addresses, like an eagle (Adler), a red sign (Rothschild), a unicorn (Einhorn) or an ostrich (Strauss). There are also names like Seligmann, which just means blessed man. And, like with other not specifically Jewish last names, there are also just random German words like professions and places, which includes names like Salzman (salt man), Epstein (Eppstein in Hesse), Halpern (Heilbronn), Shapiro (Speyer), Horowitz, Karlin, Kissinger (Kissingen), Oppenheimer (Oppenheim) or Dreifuss (three foot, reference to the city of Trier). Pfennig (penny) is an example of a currency related name that probably just originates from the coin printing city of Schwäbisch Hall. Similar to Baum and Stein, Burg (fort) or Berg (mountain), which are otherwise usually endings of place names, may have also been incorporated into Jewish last names, standing for Baruch (blessed). The name Zuckerberg for example probably did not originated from a literal mountain of sugar, but instead a combination of the name Zachariah and that syllable. The literal meaning of either word isn't translated into German, the sounds are. There is also a lot of general overlap between Jewish and non-Jewish German last names because some Jews wanted to take on more inconspicuous names and chose more generic German ones to fit in and other non-Jewish Germans also ended up with the same last names by other paths; there wasn't a clear legal distinction. So the last name Strauss (or Strauß) for a family may also have developed from warriors with ostrich feather helmets or from someone having been especially confrontational. Similarly, the last name Wolf can also refer to a wild or dangerous person, but also just a son of Wolfgang, for example. Neither is always or obviously Jewish. All very fascinating and interesting, but I am going to give you a tldr: Currency or wealth related Jewish last names might refer to the twelve tribes of Israel by gems, to archangels by precious metals or poetically to a finance related city. It's rarely profession related or, if it is, will be related to wealth in a surprising way, like by including the word Salz for salt. Also, by the way, the name Barack does also mean blessed and has its origin with Baruch, so you were onto something that other episode.

I was 50/50 on whether Hyde meant a Rockstar Energy or a Rockstar Games hat (so is Google if you ask for a Rockstar hat) and whether he would use his knowledge of Lucas for good or bad. I can't say I disapprove of his choice. PS: If you saw this comment on Patreon, no you didn't.

So the answer to getting a job with an entertainment media degree instead of being a bum living with your parents is having connections and people who believe in you. Hmm.

Yo this is not a good podcast, ask him questions about American high and let him talk etc, instead of reminiscing about a town in MS he went a few times. Idk that’s just me. Want questions that actually matter
