How to paint parrot tulips, flowers, petals, and other floral still life paintings! This is an oil painting tutorial designed to help you tackle your own floral still life paintings.
This is "Judy Garland," the second painting in the floral portion of my Square Foot Show series, which I've titled the Radiance Collection. This is painting number 5 of 12, and I have 7 paintings left to create in this online exhibition.
This painting can be modified to be an acrylic flower painting tutorial; simply work in multiple thin layers, as opposed to blending in the first shot. You can also see the Peonies tutorial for a detailed look at how to paint flowers in acrylic: • Peony Acrylic Painting...
I hope you enjoy, feel free to connect with me and let me know how I can support you on your own artist's journey! Tag me in any completed paintings that were inspired by this video so I can enjoy your artwork.
For a specific case study in how to paint a realistic petal, see from 5:08 onwards.

Hello. I'm interested in your flower painting course. How many paintings do you teach in this course and do you show the color palette with explanation of each color as you add paint to the canvas? Looking forward hearing from you. Thank you.
@MarianneVanderDussen

@@veronical3135 hi Veronica! Thank you so much for contacting me. The course consists of approximately 3.5 hours of introductory instruction that covers colour mixing, creating tones, and creating two studies of petals, all step by step and in real time, before launching into the four hour section that will take you through creating a painting of two coral charm peonies. The course has been very well received by students around the world, and if it’s something you’re considering but aren’t sure if it’s the right fit, I am happy to put in writing that if it isn’t what you were looking for, I will give you a full refund within the first 30 days. Let me know if I can answer any other questions!

Just wanted to say you voice is so soft and your art is mesmerizing. My Grandma’s favorite flower was a Tulip. She was my best friend growing up and it was a honor to love her the 19 years I got to. Your teachers voice comes through with clarity in these wonderfully produced video series. I’m now about to binge more😁 I do have a question or two (if you’re okay with spilling more nuggets of information☺️) with regards to something that’s not on this video and that’s the varnishing. First, I’d like to know what finish you use for your paintings and why? Matt, gloss, semi gloss or a combination? How long do you wait until you varnish your oil paintings and acrylic paintings? Thanks again for the high quality videos. Your very generous with the information that you put in them-the true artist’s way.
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen 2 года назад
Hi Sharon! I’m happy to answer your questions. For varnish, I use the Kamar by Krylon spray. It has a satin/semi-gloss finish. I do thin applications of oil with lots of liquin, so my paintings are usually completely dry within a week or two. Acrylic can be varnished right away. If your oil applications are thicker, you may need to wait several months before varnishing.

I planted bulbs of this TULIP,,, but a four legged female, managed to dig them up. Finding the leaf mulch I laid over easier to dig a tunnel to get to the bulbs beneath the snow. YES , I understand the details take so much longer. I do love the color Magenta and does cool down the more warmer colors. I too , usually stick to 6 to 8 at most. I am Far form any store that supplies art supplies, so to keep my paint from drying out too fast, I ended up using Pledge" floor care, It says on back Acrylic Protection. . I live in an area that has a lot of porch Pirates ready to snatch any visible package, and to have, and no good place else where for pick-up LOVE your turn out.

That is WONDERFUL to hear!!! I was intimidated by oil too. Once I learned how to work with the longer dry time and how to clean my brushes, I wound up preferring it! Don’t forget to use some liquin if you don’t already have some to ensure that the painting dries overnight (if that’s the style you prefer, some artists prefer to allow it to dry naturally).

I've been watching your tutorials from peony that peony both acrylic and oil, tulips and dahlias and I can say that it is really a fine masterpiece of artwork. You know, you paint just like I do. A little at a time across the canvas. I've heard art teachers here on you tube say that's a big no no. I tried painting like they did. Sweepingly and in large strokes but it just doesn't work for me. I find it very sloppy. Finally I see someone who does extraordinary work in my painting style. I know you're busy but I see you actually respond to people. Can I ask you, do you print your pictures out off the computer and if so what kind of paper do you use, because that's key. Gloss or matte photo paper? Thanks so much. Another breathtaking painting.
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen 2 года назад
Hi Terry, it all depends on the subject that I’m painting! With flowers, I do tend to move in small sections at a time. On the crow painting I’m currently working on, I blocked in the whole thing, and I’m about to go in to do detail. Flowers just feel right to do it all at once to capture the delicacy, whereas the feathers on my crow and the details in landscapes seem to require multiple passes. I actually have my reference photos printed off for me at Staples. I tend to use glossy, as I find the matte flattens my colors. I find it’s cheaper to do so, because one print costs just over a dollar, versus having a fancy set up at home. I hope this helps!
@terryreynolds13

@@MarianneVanderDussen Yup, Yup, lol, that's what I do when painting animals. I'll have to check out those vids of yours too. A little mesmerized with your florals right now. Maybe moving to New Liskeard in the spring. If you ever have a show I'll be sure to be there. Thanks again for the great advice. You're a real inspiration.

hey maianne! how do you find reference photos?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen 2 года назад
I build positive relationships with photographers I admire! I reach out and ask permission to turn their work into paintings. You can also join free Facebook groups that have lots of available references. Just search “free reference photos” and you’ll find plenty 🥰

Hi Marianne, is it possible to substitute alizarin crimson for quinacridone red? would it give a similar result?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen 2 года назад
Absolutely! Alizarin has some quinacridone pigmentation in it. Just make sure it’s a permanent alizarin crimson as the colour can be a little fugitive. I’m using alizarin crimson for my most recent acrylic piece and I had to find the permanent hue to avoid fading.

I don't have the rights to this particular photograph to distribute it, only to paint it. I will, however, be offering reference photos in the future for people to download!!! If you subscribe to my newsletter you'll be notified when they're available.

hola, por favor me puedes decir, que va en acrilico, y que en oleo, gracias

Hi Ana, this painting is just in oil, I did a quick layer in the background in acrylic burnt umber just to get the right tone in place so I could work over it right away. But the rest of the piece is entirely in oil!

You never show reference material? Why is that? Is it a photo or a still life set up?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen Год назад
Hi Nancy, I don’t have the distribution rights for the photo, that belongs to Teresa Overett, who I linked in the description. I typically work from photos, I find it easier at this stage in my life when I have small kids to be able to drop what I’m doing (particularly since they bring home germs from school all the time). It’s nice to work from a photo which I know won’t wilt if life gets in the way.
