For anyone interested, the first part goes: Little mice, big mice Bring the child some sleep Through the room, through the chamber Through the warm bread-oven The amazing part for me is that I worked for a few weeks to turn that first part of the song into an animation, based purely on the feeling, not the lyrics, because no matter how much I listened I couldn't make out the words at all apart from "small", "big" and "child" making an appearance. But once I got a chance to see the livonian lyrics written down, and the translation it was like...like one of those trick images, you know, where once your eyes snap into focus and you can't unsee it. But auditory. Because every word in that first stanza clearly shares an ancestry with estonian and that's beautiful to know what the lines mean and finally be able to hear the similarity. I still love that song. It makes me feel just as warm and fuzzy inside as it did when I discovered it a good two years ago.
The amazing lady who sings this beautiful song is Julgi Stalte, and I have a really tender memory, when I heard a concert of Tulli Lum in Roskilde (Denmark) in 2001. I have the cd purchased directly from the artists, and Julgi generously, agreed to kiss me saying good bye. I do not remember being kissed by other lady so angelical. Greets from Argentina, Julgi, I will remember you forever. Gustee.
This lullaby is full of love toward a child. If I was a child my heart would fill with peace and happiness. I used to sing it to my own children. I do not understand Livonian, but it starts like that: Small mouses, big mouses, bring more sleep to our child...
absolutely stunning, no understanding of the exact words required in order to feel its beauty. I'll be looking forward to finding more gems from Tulli lum on youtube.
And then you discover how close those origin areas were.
