TUMBLER BEADS, DONE DIRT CHEAP

How to get plastic pellets for your rock tumbler - dirt cheap. These beads are used as filler to reduce noise & cushion the rocks when tumbling rocks in a rotary tumbler. I got these ones from (used) stuffed animals from a local donation (reuse) store. There are plenty also at garage sales. Also, keep your eyes open for bean bag chairs. One score like that would keep you in beads for a lifetime of tumbling.

I got a great surprise the other day. My big brother who is also into rocks. I was badgering him about selling me his used Dremel tools. While I was talking he asked me about my address and he was quiet for a bit. I asked if he was still there he said yes. I just finished ordering a new Dremel with a 250 tool kit. I'm blown away. Basically his stuff is boxed up somewhere he said it was easier to buy me one than find his used sets. Big brothers are the best. Now when it gets here I can finally get to work on some rocks. 🎉🎉💞😂💝💝☕☕

I can't find anyone in town who will let me use their machine. I have a flat lap that I have not yet set up. You are welcome to use it, but I would not try on your behalf for fear of destroying your rock. Same for the vibratory flat lap, but that would need to wait for spring because it is outside.

That's the one I meant. :) I appreciate your concern, and understand the timeline, but I also accept the risk of putting the pieces on the machine. They *could* break, but I doubt it. It's solid amethyst. And thick enough that if you wanted, you could probably cut the one for yourself again and get two pieces out of it. You have a far better saw setup than I. And if they did break, oh well, throw the debris in your tumbler, and I'll just go have to dig up more! Obviously, you can think it over till spring and let me know. Time to dip into the wife’s Beanie baby stash and stock up on some plastic beads. Do plastics last longer then ceramic as far as the life time of each?
@meMiner
@meMiner 5 лет назад
Good question. I end up losing some of the beads during the rinse with each tumble. The ceramic are easier to capture. I don't really notice much wear on either in a polish. In earlier stages, I suspect both are at risk of being worn down, but I have not compared the rate.

Murder, you slaughtered innocent little aminuls . Yes, there is a slight difference in the two plastics, the beanie toys contain a softer plastic than the beads, there is also polymorph plastic which is similar, used for forming your own plastic items and finally there is hot glue but that requires being cut up. The good thing about glue sticks is you can cut any size you require. Stay warm.

Is there a non-plastic option? I'm wary of creating microplastic particles and dumping them into the environment. Water softener salt, maybe?
@meMiner
@meMiner 5 лет назад
Salt dilutes in water. As such, I am not sure that is a good choice. I have used cut up elastics, but that would have the same issue as you describe. I have also tried corn husk and walnut shell, but they seem to be best for polishing in the vibratory tumbler, rather than the rotary tumbler. Normally, people will use plastic beads or ceramic media. Ceramic is a pretty good choice for your concern. Lastly, you can cut up old leather as a filler. I have not done this but can see that it would work.

I agree with @Darren Baker, our oceans are already filling with micro plastics and unfortunately are now in our food chain. In general anything plastic is a really bad choice. And I know others will say everything is made of plastic and it's hard to find alternatives. But somebody has to put their foot down & say enough is enough. That would make a good video. We need to start a movement away from our dependence on plastic. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings.
@meMiner
@meMiner 5 лет назад
I am not a big fan of government banning or taxing anything, including plastic. At this time, there seems to be no easy way to avoid plastics. It would be my hope that somebody finds a profitable way to reuse plastic, especially water bottles. It would be nice if it were treated more like a resource than simply garbage. Where I live, they make us put it into a blue box and news crews have shown they still end up at the dump.

@@meMiner They are hard plastic beads. Theyll still leave a good mark if you get hit by one! (Like bruises and breaks the skin) It's basically a bb gun that shoots hard plastic beads. They're 6mm, where a .177 bb is 4.5mm. They do break in half sometimes, but that's nbd.
@CobaltOntarioadventures
@CobaltOntarioadventures 5 лет назад
Bascally the soft part of it is to its plastic instead of steel or copper. Ryan has a couple that are the exact same as my CO2 bb guns, they just use a bigger barrel and cheaper plastic. Same molds. (Crossman) there are also a pile of other ones that use a spring to fire them and a motor to make them fully auto, but they tend to shoot like 250-300fps. His are 375 and 450 where mine are 400 and 490fps respectively. Just the weight and drag difference is what slows it down. Then theres less impact because of the weight and speed. But dont fool yourself, if you point blank your arm, itll leave one hell of a mark! I'll send you a pic lol otherwise, the valve inside is the exact same as in my bb guns. No capacity difference or anything. The clips are the same with a bigger hole at the top and lower capacity, and the breech has a larger hole too to accommodate the 6mm instead of 4.5.

Awesome video. Those are beanie babies they were all the rage a few years back. A fad like chia pets and pet rocks. My vinegar has worked on most of my rocks. To the point most of the calcite is gone yeah woot woot. Being on a limited income and building my diy home. Home comes first and if I have extra then the rocks get some vinegar. I was watching about the citrus acid powder wowzer that worked way faster than vinegar. I was soaking this white stone I thought was calcite cause I'm such a babe in the woods. I think it was one of the sandstone or limestone and it wasn't coming off fast enough to suit me so me being me got frustrated and picked up one of many harder rockd and hit it (I couldn't find my lady hammer) till I chipped off a piece its real pretty inside but sadly looks like the same stuff just different color. It will look pretty in my rock garden. Ok I have a question I understand translucent and opac (SPELLING) and clear. What makes me confused is agates can have rings and circles they don't show up. So you gave two pretty shiny translucent rocks with shades of caramel and dark chocolate.Both have Concoudial fractures but they are slightly different in subtle ways like one is just a touch less shiny or has an odd feel not so buttery smooth. Here's the confusing question one is a possible agate, what would the other one be jasper, chirt, calcedany, flint, quartzite, or a mineral of some type. Then there's the thing about morphic rocks that one has me way beyond confused when I'm struggling to learn the names. By the time I learn to identify flint will have turned into chert...wwhhaat that's just not fair. 😹😹 😳

I am pretty sure you won't turn into chert...diamond maybe... Agate (and stones similar to agate) can be somewhat complex. The best description that I have found is on mindat.org. Here it is: www.mindat.org/min-51.html

I bought a rock Tumbler. reading the instructions it said that the grit and Powder is very toxic and cancer causing. Is there any other way to tumble the rocks without getting cancer or sick???? i want to try it so bad but now I am afraid of the white powder? Any suggestions PLEASE? Love how yours turned out! Gorgeous!
@meMiner
@meMiner 4 года назад
Don't mix up the grit with your coffee whitener. Otherwise, I cannot see a problem. Trying to be funny...Now seriously, anytime you handle rock or grit, be sure to wash up afterwards. There is possible bad stuff to breath or eat. I handle rock containing heavy metals and arsenic quite often plus radioactives and silicas. I plan on getting old.

Hey Greig ~ Excellent tip here ~ Have you ever tried >> Corn
@meMiner
@meMiner 5 лет назад
I have heard of people using corn husk, but that is more for vibratory tumblers. I have tried crushed walnut shell. As for kernels of corn, I suspect they would turn to goo when wet, but could stand corrected.

@@meMiner Yes ~ you are probably right on the goo ~ i meant the *dried ones used for popcorn*.... tough little buggers :>) hehe ~ just sayin'.

I was picturing niblets. LOL It would be great if your idea worked, because I can buy a 50 lb bag of dry feed corn for about $15 CDN. I have not heard of anybody trying it, but it might work or would suck up all of the water and then turn to the dredded goo.

I broke a tooth on the popcorn kernels, so I know what you mean by them being tough.

How do you know when to use ceramic or plastic beads, is it just the hardness of the rock or something else?
@meMiner
@meMiner 4 года назад
I mostly use it as a filler, to keep the amount of material in the barrel between 1/2 and 3/4

Hey did you sew the poor pound pups back up ;-), do you think that these types of beads could be used for aroma beads for air fresheners? But i'd imagine that they won't soak up the essential oils awesome smells. What's your opinion on this?

They are hard plastic, so I don't think there would be much "soaking up"

LOL. I forget but probably paid something like a quarter for it. It was either going to be taken apart for the beads or given to my dog as a play toy. I guess as they get scarce, the value could go up but not in my home.

Why is a Canadian wearing Confederate flag on a hat. There's no reason to say it's part of his ancestry. So what's the other reason?
@meMiner

It's just a hunting hat and not a political statement.
@Ravedave5
@Ravedave5 5 лет назад
@@meMiner saying it's not a politcal statement doesn't make it not political. If I chose to wear a swastika around and it made people angry I couldn't just say 'not political!' to fix it. It's unfortunate people want to associate with a flag that represents breaking apart the us.
