Bathurst is about 200 klm, across the Great Dividing Range, from Sydney, Australia. West of the town, trains faced the formidable, steeply graded Tumulla Bank, and banking engines were stationed at Georges Plains to assist up the hill, usually pushing behind the Guards van. Filmed by Phil Belbin.

Great footage of a great time. Australian rail is so boring these days. Some really good locomotives shown here. Brings back some top memories. We'll done 👌

Very evocative, these films of days gone by, and never to return. I just wish that I wasn’t born early enough to enjoy these sights. And what about the Gladstone bag perched on the sill of 3624! Classic stuff. Thanks so much for sharing this Graeme.

As a young teenager in the 1960s, my mate and I would head out west to ride the steam trains and would stay a few days in the fettler's huts at Tumulla Bank. They were fabulous experiences.

Not much remains at Tumulla today, runaway embankment remains and a small concrete slab where the box was on the Up Main side and that is about it. Poor Georges Plains has fallen on hard times, which is a pity, great little station and box slowly falling apart. Thank you for sharing, great video.

Sadly I never got to see the beauty or experience the romance of regular steam operations I'm glad theres film to see for future generations

Disappointed I never got around to ordering the second volume before the site shut down, Days Of Steam is such a remarkable documentary. Incredible film and sound work, thank you.

Thank you very much , I always love watching your videos , you boys have seen much of what others ( like me ) wish that we could've seen on a regular basis , today's trains are just "boring" but you had so much more variety to enjoy , keep up the great work!

Amazing memories brought back to life. I travelled this line many times when I was a child and was sad to see the steamers replaced by diesels. I would watch the shunting at Dubbo yard for hours on end.

A fantastic time on the NSWGR. When it was a real railway. As I have heard said.

Epic footage Graeme, just wonderful! Is that a young you at 1:10? Those double-headed 38s were quite something and the walking pace Garratt is I think the slowest I've seen on film. Caught a double-headed pair going that slow while taking photos on Hawkmount in August 1969; walked alongside and had a shouted conversation with the crew. Undying memories!

Yes, Grant, that's me. The Garratt actually slowed even more after that and barely made it. I have the sound. Dad often ran out of film and only had a clockwork wind. Loved the Hawkmount days.
