Japanese izakaya are sometimes clustered directly under elevated railroad tracks. They are called "koukashita" (under the elevated tracks) or "ga-doshita" (under the girder), and are highly favored mainly by office workers.
In koukashita, rents are low because of the noise and vibration of the railroad directly below the tracks. For this reason, izakayas in Koukashita are located in the heart of the city, yet they offer inexpensive drinks.
Koukashita's izakayas can be found in central Tokyo's Yurakucho, Shinbashi, and Ueno areas. However, if you venture a little further out into the suburbs, you will find koukashita that have turned into very attractive deep spots. The best example of this is the elevated area in Koenji.
