Appreciate the way you laid this out. I am buying a lot of this stuff next few weeks. I have experience fishing the Canyon in the 70s and early 80s And it is mind boggling the changes and developments the past 35 years while I was away. I’ll probably go with what you have hear. Prices look good. The quality is very important. Gonna have to pace myself buying jigs though just a few each style each year build as I go Thanks

@@corymattson6350 Thanks for the kind words. I wanted this video to help others out that had questions about rigging, assist hooks, etc. The games changed a ton since the 80’s. If you want a chuckle take a look at daytime swordfish reels/rigging/deep drop setup. It’s a crazy setup and works extremely well. FYI- Don’t go too crazy with jigs. Grab a half dozen and start there. There’s also a jig bite going on right now so try to get on the water asap.

Well done and very informative video. Already have Nomad jig bag but yours is much better. Going to get a set of those pliers they look great. Thanks for taking the time, really enjoy your videos, never learn enough about fishing.

Thank you! You are going to like the split ring pliers.

That tackle bag is awesome. The other benefit with that bag is the jigs arent bouncing against each other wearing out the coating. I need one.
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 8 месяцев назад
The bag is indeed awesome! Don’t let that Mustad name fool you…. I looked online at EVERY production jig bag in the world and found this one to have the highest capacity, hold the jigs (with hooks) tightly and yet retain a ‘small’ profile overall. Bag hold small jigs, medium, large, wide and long jigs beautifully. No bouncing against each other..

tackle bag is great, I would eliminate the split ring that goes to the jig and just attach the first split ring to the jig just to cut down on hardware and connections.
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 8 месяцев назад
There are a few ways to rig the connection. While I agree with you about cutting down on hardware, the way I have shown somewhat cuts down on the jig being used as leverage while engaged with a fish.

Great video! Thanks for sharing the info! It's the exact video I've been looking for. Just got a new boat at the end of last summer and really want to get into tuna fishing. I'm out of SE CT, so this was very helpful. I've been struggling as to what kind and size reel to buy, and you mentioned a temporary problem with the reel, so would you recommend possibly getting a bigger size reel?
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 5 месяцев назад
Glad you enjoyed and found the video informative. I have not experienced any problems with the reel. I just mentioned that it would go through a heat cycle, then cool down like it is suppose to while fighting the fish for hours. Basically ran the reel through a torture test with that particular fish. Drag, gears etc were 100% after the battle. I caught tuna after that fish as well and the drag is still super smooth. What kind of boat did you pick up?

Great video, thanks. Is that just a palomar to the swivel?
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 5 месяцев назад
Its actually a 5 turn clinch knot. A palomar will work though

Great video. One question. There are several types (Flat,-Side Wind-Fall, Flat-Fall) etc) , etc) Shimano Butterfly types of jigs. Which type of Butterfly jig do you prefer? Thanks for the video.
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for viewing, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Pretty sure the jigs are Shimano's flat-side butterfly jigs, those are the only shimano ones I have used.

You don’t find a lever drag to be a pain in the ass having to set the drag every time you let line out?
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 7 месяцев назад
No, I don’t find it a pain in the ass. The reel is compact and the throw from free spool to strike is quick. There is a stop knob at strike so your not really setting the drag when you let out. Besides, there are very few star drag reels on the market I would trust to handle tuna up to 200#.

What’s with the latex/rubber gloves?

The camera was blurring out my hands when they got close. Not sure if it was the white table below them or what was causing it. After doing the whole thing and watching it, had to re-do because it was blurry majority of the footage. 😡

How much do you think color matters for butterfly jigs?
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 8 месяцев назад
At depth I don’t believe it matters at all. Past 150 ft there isn’t much light anyways. When the fish are at that 50-60 ft mark I do believe color can matter greatly.
@shaunharding4227
@shaunharding4227 27 дней назад
I’m pretty sure past 100ft the only color you can see is blue

Do you think these would work for cod? We used to jig for cod many years ago
@RhodeIslandSportfishing
@RhodeIslandSportfishing 5 месяцев назад
Sure they would work. I prefer a Norwegian style jig or a jig with an affixed hook for cod though. Tip hook with clam
@stevenl34
@stevenl34 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, Norwegian is what we used to use 40 yrs ago. You got some serious tackle there. Looking forward to more videos this year@@RhodeIslandSportfishing
