Timeless, Ageless music. I never get tired of listening. I entertain myself dancing to this music in my office Friday nights. I wish these so called "modern" musicians will learn from these oldies. The uniqueness is unbeatable and excellent rhythm. No copycat. To our elder Tunde Nightingale and others departed - PEACE

Tunde was unique.Truely, no bird sings like Nightingale. In Tunde Thomas's case, no musician would sound like Tunde Nightingale,no matter how hard they tried to be the bird that sings at night. Tunde, onset started his music with a clear identity, when others were looking for their own.

On point of correction, Tunde is a native of Lagos Island, he only moved to Ibadan and spent the better part of his life in Ibadan and died there. Also, Ibadan is the largest city in West Africa and is second to Cairo, Egypt, being the largest in Africa.

He was the originator of "O wa mbe" music which exploded into public arena in the 60s and that's how Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey started their musical careers playing like Tunde Nightingale after which they repackaged their music into "Juju"

I recalled my daddy used to tell us when we were kids that Tunde Nightingale attended Baptist Boys' High School in Abeokuta, he was born in Ago-Oko in Abeokuta, his mother was from Egbado, he probably lived in Ibadan while building his music career but he lived extensively in Lagos in late 50's and 60's where he played regularly at Bar-beech and Ikoyi Hotels, changed his last name to Nightingale bacause people said he sounded like the bird 'nightingale' that sings with a thin voice.

Could this wonderful style have any possible "boomerang" influence, from Afro-Cuban, back to West Africa ? Many of Cuba's slaves came from the area which is today's Nigeria. There are two sticks playing a pattern that sounds a lot like clave. There's a hand drum that resembles the bongò, commenting throughout. The repeating chorus that alternates with a solo singer's lines ... I know it's sort of like asking about chicken and egg, and what would Cuban music be without the African soul that dominates? Orchestra Baobab is clearly a style derived from Cuba. Some sources say JuJu predominates in Yoruba regions, and Yoruba is a strong element in Afro-Cuban music.

On that point of correction, my brother Adisa Olayinka, I think he was actually an Abeokuta man. Full name Ernest Olatunde Thomas of Ago-Oko very close to Shapon in Abeokuta. Truth to tell, I've had to contest the Ibadan thing with a brother who also mentioned some big Aunties to corroborate his claim. But I think I am right. But could anyone who knows the real fact of this issue please chip in here. Tunde 'The Western' Nightingale had his roots in Egbaland. What say you?
