Great video! I did the 13wl conversion on my 2002 4runner. Used the napa ones. They're awesome. My house and work are close to 2000 vertical feet apart over only 15 miles. I drive from the top of the continental divide to the piedmont nd every part of the drive is steep and winding. These rotors are the difference between a "sketchy old truck" and something really solid. If you have rusty dust shields, It's worth replacing them when you do the rotors, the old rusty dust covers tend to warp and want to touch your rotor, easily fixed, but that squeal is the last thing you want to hear when you just finished a brake job. Between you and faye, a 4runner is an easy truck to work on

Tanks great vidéo gave me confidence to change my first caliper, did not rebuild it from scratch like you did but buy refurbished at 290$ cdn and they gave me back 115$ for old one at Canadian tire.

I did this a few years ago, bought the big tundra breaks and calipers and brought all the stuff to my mechanic. Picked up my 4Runner the next week and the mechanic said "you bought the wrong parts, I exchanged them for 4Runner parts"! Your all set! He screwed me with my pants on...

You must have got that 100 k by putting that 3rd gen. in and out of your garage. That's super clean, mine is a total rust bucket on the underside. Great work.

Its a good idea to clean the rotors with brake cleaner when theyre new. Some manufacturers put a thin layer of oil to keep them from rusting in storage.

Personal experience with this mod: Bought caliper, disc, pad kit, KC2323 (stamped S13WE) from Pwrstp.com, thru Auto Zone. The calipers that came with this kit were exactly the same bolt pattern size, length, cylinders size, etc (except the flaming red coating) as the ones that my truck had installed (stamped S13WM or N (one of the two)). Nevertheless, I had replaced them twice, and rotors x4, on an 18-year span. I returned the kit to store and after 2 more trips back (press-on Mr. Dwight Howard) searching for this S13WE 199mm, I end up with an S13WG caliper (02 Tundra 4.7-2WD) that seem to be 20mm or so longer than the existing WM calipers. The caveat; had to grind a small area on the outboard side of the caliper (.025 chaffing against 16"stock rims).

This an awesome tutorial. I am considering the 199mm tundra caliper upgrade for my 97 4Runner. I did consider the 231mm calipers, but after doing some research, I discovered I would have to do some grinding on my factory rims to get them to fit.

I saw you said Home Depot in the comments... was that in Plumbing maybe?? I'll have to show you my bleeder tool that I built from a yard sprayer - I can use your tool for my 4runner with it, basically it replaces shop air, which I don't have. Thanks in advance...

I like your kind of work, it's very clean and professional. Did you use the 13WL calipers or the smaller 13WG calipers?

I really like your shop air idea, that's a good one for making brake bleeds a one-person job. One thing I don't think you mentioned in this video: I think it is a good idea to have a dryer on your compressor when using it for this purpose, especially if humidity is high the day that you do this work. Brake fluid is hygroscopic (i.e., it absorbs water) and air expanding past that regulator will tend to precipitate moisture out, and you don't want that water dripping down your fittings into the reservoir. That might be splitting hairs most days, but might actually be worth considering in a very humid environment.

Teflon tape goes clockwise and about 3 to 4 times around.

Was thinking about this upgrade but can't justify the labor and added time for install. I rather adjust the drums a tad tighter and if offroading consistently, maybe a semi-metallic pad on the front with a thicker aftermarket rotor? Trying to think when I'd be off roading over 400lbs of gear. My gf's 280lbs, so I'm almost halfway there.

For anyone trying to make that home made bleeder tool I want to let you guys know that that 2” to 3/4” rubber reducer basically doesn’t exist as I recently made this tool myself how ever I use a couple different parts because that reducer is no where to be found I went to multiple Home Depot’s I went to Menards to Lowe’s to Ace Hardware and just couldn’t find it so luckily me and my little brother found out another way to make the tool without that specific reducer and get the same results.

This upgrade will work for a 2000 4Runner 2.7L?

teflon wraps against (other direction) threads, The tape is "screwed" into the mating thread surface not against it.

Hey Speedy, nice video and presentation! With the 2002 fat lip 4R , you have the Toyota upgraded B/Booster pump and MC Solenoid. So you have dynamically adjusted brake fluid pressure. A different animal than the 1996-2000 BB MC combination, which tend to show pedal fading signs when running the TBBUG Thanks

Depending on the piston size of the new calipers , you may need to replace the master cylinder, otherwise you will have a rear bias.

Stupid observation: on your video, at marks 4:27, 4:30 & 4:34 I noticed the teflon tape being applied against the threads rather than WITH the threads. I"ve always put tape on in the direction of the threads so that when a fitting it tightened onto the threads the tape doesn't unravel. I mostly do water/irrigation systems. Anyone else have input on this? Just my O.C.D kicking in when I was watching the video. haha

Great tutorial! I was inspired to do the upgrade as well. I got all the same stuff as you did, but on the Stoptech rotors I noticed on each side after a test drive, that there was about a half inch on each rotor of no brake pad contact towards the hub, other than that, they looked well bedded in. Just wondering if yours have the same half inch of no wear on the rotors towards the hub? Thanks

Was going to do this over Thanksgiving break but discovered that rockauto, in all their wisdom, shipped me 2 passenger side calipers... Is there any way you know of that could get the drivers side brake line to fit and function? Or am I pretty much screwed?

In the future do you plan on trying to resurface your brake rotors or are you going to just replace them with new slotted rotors again? Some say you can't resurface slotted or drilled rotors. I have plans to do a similar Tundra brake upgrade to my 01 Tacoma but I can't decide whether or not to buy factory rotors or performance slotted rotors. I like the performance of the slotted rotors but I want to be able to resurface them like the factory brake rotors. Any advice?

Hey Speedy! so i am actually attempting this upgrade tomorrow along with replacing the Brake Master cylinder due to it giving me issues when its extremely cold outside. I noticed in your video you said to not let it go below the min mark....I am just curious since i will be replacing the whole unit and it won't have any fluid in it how should i go about filling it? Scared that i will get air in it and mess up the system. should i just fill it and drive slowly to the dealership and have them flush it?

Do you have to bleed the brakes because you opened the system or just because you wanted to because service was due ??

I need to replace my brakes soon on my 4Runner and am going to do this upgrade but I cant decide on pads. I really want low dust but I really want the best stopping power possible.

Where the hell did you buy that rubber reducer? I’ve searched high and low and couldn’t find any 2in x 3/4in flexible reducer. I have everything else
