How To Rebuild Brake Calipers 3rd Gen 4Runner 13WL 

Awesome tutorial. Working on airplane landing gears years ago, I learned to use brass picks for removing seals, O-rings. Brass is softer than steel and it won’t scratch it. Thanks for a great video.

Getting them soda blasted is probably the best cleaning method I have come across . No damage to any parts,no grit and no etching of the surfaces.

I asked my mechanic to do it and he said it was too time consuming. Since it was for my son't truck and he said the fronts were still in good shape I didn't insist, but one day I'm doing this. Awesome video!!!

I just picked up a set of these calipers off a salvaged Sequoia. No rust and only $20 each from pickyourpart! Thank you for your videos.

I go to my mechanic friend almost every year to put on a new caliper and we always have same argument. He tells me to just buy a new caliper rather than refurb these myself. But damn $60 per caliper (includes shipping) sure adds up over the years. Never knew how technically simplistic this process was! Even if this whole process takes 2 hours for 4 pistons. Rebuild kit is $25. $60 - $25 = $35. $35/2 = $17.50 an hour. That's a fairly good savings for most of us. Plus, you have the personal satisfaction and piece of mind knowing you did this professionally. So yea - this project can well be worth the trouble of doing. Your video was uncomplicated, you showed great detail where needed, and you pointed out any hazzards along the way. Great job! I know I just subscribed!!!

Great video and very detailed. But i must say, those are the cleanest set of calipers ive ever seen that need rebuilding! Dust boots, square cut seals and pistons were all in amazing shape...

I got mine today for $13.99 each! Now to clean em up/rebuild and fit to the 4runner.... can't wait!

Nice commentary, straight to the point, nice tips on what to/not do, I have a 2001 Sequoia 4wd, so, this was a perfect video! Nice production, the white light was perfect for showing the internal square seal. Like the tip on holding a rag over the tip of the compressed nozel!

Speedy, thanks for the great, detailed tutorial. Really impressed by the quality of the editing too. I'm building 199mm calipers right now (too hard to find 231mms from a non-front end damaged vehicle for a *reasonable* price). I believe something you should emphasize that wasn't in your vid is at 7:30: you appeared to have C-clamped three of the almost seated pistons to get out the 4th one. That was escaping me for about 20 mins while doing the job last night :)

Looks great. Going to attempt this on my xjs. Its developed a caliper leak somewhere. I imagine this leak will make the pistons harder to remove. I don't have a compressed air gun but if i get stuck I will have to go to a garage i guess!

Good video. Covers most things. It pays to separate the two caliper halves when doing this, as the fluid channel "O" ring should also be replaced, and it makes it easier to work on. .

Much help. Only thing i add is a 12v air pump to shoot the pistons out. I have 2 tiny o rings with my kit. Assuming they are for the bleed valve to cover since kit didn't have like yours did. But overall pretty painless (except for a thumb) TY!

Great video I'm following what you did. I wish you had done a followup video on putting new fluid in the caliper to avoid air pockets, installing it on the car and then bleeding the calipers. I'm doing the driver's side on my 98 land cruiser and found the pistons were really stuck. You used about 20 lbs air, well I had to use about 100 psi to get one of them to move. Using blocks of wood and a C clamp is a must. When it pops out, it pops. And yes, I highly recommend wearing safety glasses. When the kits come in I'll put in the new parts. Any suggestions on refilling the caliper is welcome.

awesome video! I will almost never ever buy a pair of calipers again. This will save me a good 100 bucks on my brake job I will be doing over the weekend. I need to put new pads on the front of my 2007 Ram 1500 I need rotors pads, and I am going to rebuild the calipers. TY!

I blasted mine with walnut shells, turned out great and did not cause any problems.

Well, certainly first time doing this and it worked out great! Been a month since I did it and brakes are firm and working great. I caught it before any cylinders were scored or frozen....but rubber seals were torn some. I used a bike pump with a plastic nozzle to provide compressed air and some clamps to control which cylinders would be pushed out first. Thanks again for a great video

Looks easy to do, But like you said, it’s tedious and time consuming to do it right. Thx I had an incident where a piston popped while the caliper was off and I ran the engine. Pressurized, popped, a then I had to learn to assemble. Easy on a Toyota.

Somehow, I didn't expect the hardest part of this to be getting those dust boots back on and that ring seated... (they gave me two sets (8 boots) of boots and I had to figure out which set was the best fit)... thanks for the tutorial!

Hello! I watched this video a few times. I recently got a blasting cabinet for Xmas and man it's awesome! I have tried sand, soda, and glass beads. I used to clean parts by hand but not any more. You do an awesome job using the wire wheels and brushes. But, it's so much easier if you have a blasting cabinet and a decent compressor.

Well explained with visual instructions 💯 However i did the same job with the same calipers like yours but i found 2 small seals in my rebuild caliper kit and i realized these seals are located between the casting of the calipers from the left to the right ( his function is to seal the passage of the brake fluid from one side to the other one ) . You forget to mention that in that video !!! Otherwise very useful video !! Keep it up !! One more Suscriber !! 🙏🏾

iv just got metro turbo 4 pot brakes with rusty pistons i was going to pat to have them rebuilt but looks so easy i will just do it myself

a very good video, but i have tried all afternoon to get those dust cover/boots in place with the spring clip and have failed to the point where i have emailed the repair kit makers , AND also hunted high and low for another type of cover, i have the caliper in two halves so it should be easy but have to say after 40 years in aviation these springs just ping off as soon as you look at them, cheshire uk. Car is a R129 Merc SL.

As long as the damaged area is not behind the dust boot, it's fine. The front face is only contacting the brake pad and pushing it against the rotor.

If I were doing this I would slip the boots over the piston in hand , then insert the piston with the boot attached into the bore of the caliper. I think it would be easier this way

The trick with the ring is to keep it expanded ( pulled apart) while you slip it over the boot and into place. No need to grease the ring then as doing it this way you need a good grasp which a greased ring will not afford you

Awesome video...Just to note though. if your seal kit didn't come with grease like mine... you have to use a synthetic brake and caliper grease. not just general purpose. eg CRC / Bosch make good ones.

So say I may have previously used a hammer to "unstick" some of the brake pistons and slightly deformed the edge of the piston (that presses against the pads), worst case scenario with this?

If you don't have compressed air. Remove the pads and depress the brake pedal. That will push them out enough for you to work them out yourself. Be VERY careful not to scratch the outside of the piston unless you are replacing it.

At 9:30 you show the piston. I have some corrosion on the lip of the piston where the small part of the rubber boot fits on. Brake cleaner won't clean it off. It's not much but I'm not sure if it's okay to clean it and use it. What do you recommend on cleaning it and/or reusing it.

I have 2 pistons in each caliper on my 99 f150. Had a piston seize and ruin a rotor 2 years ago. I rebuilt the 2 calipers years ago and now have 1 piston on each side seizing. I used Duralast Rotors and pads from Autozone and am reading bad reviews on them =/ I probably only used a toothbrush on the pistons and I think they were a black plastic or ceramic er something. Don't remember. Maybe a piston is ruined or didn't get cleaned to a polish cause I didn't want to damage it. No idea why they're failing again.
