Tundra Superior RANGE and Towing MPGs

The current Tundra gets knocked on for MPGs all the time, appropriate if you only use it as a daily commuter. But if you use it like it was intended - to tow heavy loads for long distances, it still offer impressive MPGs and range that other half tons just can't reach.
As I show in this video, even at high altitudes, it performs better than expected for a naturally aspirated engine. It probably performs better than most forced induction (turbo) gasoline engines in any current half ton and likely outperforms the next generation Tundra if the predicted V6 Twin Turbo 3.5L is accurate. Don't agree, that is ok. Watch the video and share your thoughts.

Elevation is often overlooked. Good video. I get 12 MPG towing my 3500lbs 2020 Escape 19 (fibreglass shell similar to Casita) trailer around Ontario Canada. The horrible gas mileage is offset by extraordinary reliability.

I bet it is hard to find another half ton that will tow that setup with that kind of efficiency.

We bought a new Chevy Avalanche in 2001 5.4L 286 hp and towed a 19’ Airstream got 10 mpg. I bought a new 2017 Tundra SR5 5.7 L that has 100 hp more then the Avalanche and I get 14 mpg towing the same Airstream so I’m happy and knew ahead of time the mpg. And nothing it is dependable (wish I could say that about my Avalanche, which we loved, but we never knew what next was going to break) thank you for your great vids

Man I would love to get a hold of an Airstream that size. 14 mpg towing a '19 is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

2020 limited off road.38 gal tank. Towed an 8k box trailer from Pa to Nebraska last Dec. Dropped it off there and returned empty. 8mpg avg loaded, 18 empty. No cylinder deactivation, no turbos. Happy!!!! I'll sacrifice a mpg or two empty to gain the reliability all day!!!

And regular fuel. Ram Hemi, GM 6.2L, and Ford Ecoboost all recommend or require higher fuel grades. They seem to forget that at professional review sites.

on a 2000 mile vacation trip in my '14 Tundra 1794 I got a max of 18 mpg on only one leg. Most of the time it was around 14-16. This was just driving it like a car. My '19 Ram LongHorn will make 22mpg and consistently does 19+ overall. Maybe they've upped the MPG, but my experience was very different than what you're saying.

I just returned from a trip from Maine to Kansas towing a 7500 lb trail trailer and the best mpg was 10 mpg from a 2019 tundra sr.

Sounds about right. I always do better towing MPGs west of the Mississippi. In this case , when you cross the Cuyahoga in Cleveland I80/90 becomes pretty flat the rest of that route.

Some might say one extra fill up is no big deal in trucks with a shorter range, but getting off the highway with a trailer and navigating through an unfamiliar town can be a pain.

Yes it is. Noticing TFL is talking more about range now that EVs are a thing.

MY own opinion is that 1/2 tons are generally good somewhere between 7 and 8k lbs. There are certainly those that are comfortable putting a lot more weight behind their 1/2 tons. Many 1/2 tons are rated to tow in excess of 10k lbs. I'm just not comfortable doing that with the places and distances that I travel. Hope you find something you love.

Excellent videos on the Tundra’s capabilities. It appears to be the perfect tow vehicle for your Lance 2375. I’m considering the Tundra to couple with the 2285. I would love if you put out a video that focused on: sway control, payload limitations, towing capacity, general towing safety concerns, etc. Thank you!

Six hundred and fifty miles. LOL With a tail wind down a mountain maybe. I have put over 130,000 miles on two Tundras with the 5.7 and they are gas hogs no matter how you slice it. I do like the big tank, but mine turns on the low fuel light when it takes 30-31 gallons.

It is great that you shared your experience, which is different than mine. Are you running stock, made any mods affecting consumption, drive it mostly city?

Everything is relative, all big heavy vehicles get poor mileage compared to a Prius.

Have you done anything to your tank? On tundra forums those guys have never really been able to get 36 gallons in the tank on a fill up, even when riding on empty for a while. Thanks for the video!

The fuel gauge reads empty between 31-32 mpgs. I am comfortable that it is a 38g tank. Don’t want to find out by running out of gas.

Please don’t run your tundra out of fuel that extra gas is to protect your fuel pump.

Great video, thanks for taking the time to get us the information. I have a 2021 Tundra that I have been enjoying. I upgraded from a Tacoma that was a great truck but I started towing a 6,500 lb travel trailer so I needed to upgrade. Sounds like my trailer weight is similar to yours. I getting some bounce and movement from the trailer. I upgraded my tires to make sure that wasn’t the problem but the bounce is still there. I do have a Anderson weight distribution/sway control setup. It uses chains rather than solid bars, so I’m wondering if that’s my problem. What type of weight distribution system are you using. Any other comments would be appreciated.

I installed Firestone Ride Rite air bags for when I tow. Not a very difficult install. Cutting the bump stops was the only obnoxious part. I usually tow with the bags set at 25-30 psi and utilize a Fastway E2 WDH with sway control. I have 800/8,000lbs round bars with this setup. It took some playing around to get the hitch set right with the bags so that everything rested level and still appropriately distributed weight between the front and rear axles.

Roadmaster active suspension (RAS) solved that problem for me. I tow a 27ft GVWR 7,000 lb Winnebago Minnie and was already utilizing a Husky TS WDH/ sway control hitch and Sumo Springs. The RAS-HD eliminated the porpoising (bouncing of the trailer) along with providing support for the suspension and a better overall towing experience. Worth the money for sure....

Imagine the performance if the 5.7 was mated to a 8-10 speed transmission? Going to Wyoming on our annual hunting trip my friends 5.3 chevy 4 speed got identical mileage with considerably less power than my 07 Tundra. After 2 engines and 2 transmissions he bought a 2019 chevy with the 8 speed, on our next trip he averaged 1-2 mpg better. And that 8 speed really did help the 5.3’s performance. I think the current Tundra does quite well considering the age of its design especially when you factor in the reliability and has been my choice for a truck the last 15 years. I hope to see Toyota keep a V8 option (5.0 in the Lexus or the current 5.7) and pair it to the new 10 speed transmission. I think it would preform well and probably be overall more reliable the the turbo option.

The new Tundra will definitely have a 10speed trans. In a few more days - 9-20-21, we should know engine options.

The 5.7 3UR-FE has been mated to an 8 speed but it is on the 2016+ Land Cruiser 200 and the 2016+ LX570. 2008 to 2015 models have the same 6 speed transmission like the Tundra. It didn't change the mpg but the low end gear got better especially when you are in 4-LO. The rear end is 3.31 on the 2016+ (down from the 3.91 on the 2008 to 2015 models; which are down from the Tundra's 4.3 rear end). I hope the extra two speed make up for the rear axle ratio dropping to 3.31. Toyota should have added the 8 speed and possibly changed the rear axle from 4.30 to 3.91 during the 2016/2017 refresh to the Tundra but they dropped the ball on that one so we are stuck with the 6 speed from 2016 to 2021. Now we have the new 2022 Tundra coming out with a 10 speed.
