The Smoking Tire heads out to Willow Springs International Raceway to test a friend's Mitsubishi Evo X, tuned by Road Race Engineering. Is the Evo quick enough to keep up with a Porsche 996 Cup Car? We'll see.....
Russ's business is doing vinyl work for cars, trucks, etc.. So his own car is his portfolio. The Carbon fiber roof and stuff is all vinyl too, it's very realistic looking and feeling.
it's free to join, and you get 80% of the deals for the free membership. If you want deals on the really expensive stuff, like racing schools, where you'll save hundreds of dollars, you upgrade to the pole position membership.
if there's one thing this episode proves, it's that driving fast on a racetrack is much safer than driving fast on the street. Russ went off at almost 90 mph, and all that happened was a cracked wheel, some plastic, and a little dent on the door. if this had happened on the street, it could have been catastrophic.
I just realized what happens. When we upload the videos on The Smoking Tire, it IS full HD. But when they get sent to this feed, they are run through a program called Castfire, which is used to process Next New Networks' advertising, unrelated to The Smoking Tire, and Castfire compresses them. So I guess this feed will be standard definition and The Smoking Tire's channel is full HD.
Man that's really the pits when ur put on the spot with a camera and something goes wrong. I hope he gets his car up and running soon that thing looked like an absolute blast to drive.
the whole weekend, which consists of eight 30 minute sessions, was $250 once you become a member of NASA ($50ish for a year). Tires, brake pads, fuel, and the risk of breaking the car (most insurance won't cover track damage), are a different story altogether.
There are some specifics to it, but basically we're going to post videos on both channels now, forever. After 6 months of it looking just like it does now, all Garage419 channels will be re-branded The Smoking Tire.
Smoking Tire FTW!!!!! $150 for a day on the track is worth it its obvious when he lost control and ended up in the mud that it was engineered to absorb the energy and slow him down safely. I'm sure it saved him thousands if he had gone off the road. either from hitting a random rock or the fact that he might have sunk at high speeds causing end over end wreck. Along with endless other possibilities. All of this is something I didn't understand when I was younger.
we shoot in 1080p HD, higher resolution than RU-vid will support. because of this, there is a several hour period when you first post a video that it has to process and it looks like crap.
Coming from one racer to another (i have grown up racing). started with quarter midgets when i was 6, moved to dirt racing when i was 14 (bomber, factory stock, super stock), been drag racing since 16 (1967 mustang) and now being 22 have moved onto road course racing with my 99 cobra. Im glad you and ur car are alright, but take it a little easy. it not only seemed to me (well after editing what they showed) that u were driving on the edge the complete time (slow it down a bit).
Are you serious? A Pube? I've never been mysterious about anything. The GTR from that video with the rental car wasn't mine, I simply called it "my GTR" for the purposes of the video. The Corvette is mine, and it's sitting in my garage right now if you'd like to come by and take a look. I used to live in New York, and Tom and I moved to LA in June to make the smoking tire.
the UK "FQ400" model is 400 crank HP not wheel. And if you're building a daily-driver / track car, 650-700 hp is really unneccessary. I've driven Evo's with that much power and they are very difficult to drive on a track. Not that huge power isn't impressive, just not really as much fun because you can't use it all....
Went off the day before and then 3 times while Matt was there... should tell you the driver doesn't really know what he was doing but was trying to show off. Then again it happens when your racing so hope the driver is ok and that Matt can drive it soon.
The Evo needs a rear wing and some canards in the front, as well as a front splitter for more downforce. He also pushes his car too hard to pass, If he had the more dowfoce he could carry the speed that he would like. More power is not the answer, but more high speed stability is. He also needs to be a little bit more ginger and take lest risks. I know it's akward driving a car with a big wig o the street but he needs it for the track.
Wife was probably happy about that one. Im sure you can never hurt it though, should have kept on it according to top gear. It would have driven itself out of it.
fusionofideas: Are you the ownder of the Evo? if you are thats awesome and I just want to say no pain no game. You can never get better or find the limits of your car if you never loose control or damage it sometimes. Sure kinda sucks its damaged but its not close to totaled and your ok thats the important thing I don't think its possible to be a true racer without ever loosing control of your vehicle. Get back on the track and keep getting better.
Tell me about it. Its a good thing we have the internet now. I would have never known where to look for a track otherwise. I found out there is one only 2 hour drive from me. The only place I knew where tracks were was 4 hour drive and I didn't know the specifics. Turns out there isn't even a real track in my state that isn't a dirt oval or drag strip. I googled it state by state and found several tracks in ok distance. and I'm sure once I make it out to a track I'll learn about more
fusionofideas, dont waste time here man, i understand exactly how you feel, everyone is an expert at everything they've only seen videos of. they dont realize what it's really like to drive something like that. and im glad you didnt let the mat guy drive your car. last thing i'd want is to let some cocky know it all drive my built car. and you should have ran over mat for trying exploit your misfortune by advertising for his own gain
Ok i've never gone off the track but in order for a person to know the limits of the car, you gotta go off the track at least once. But 3 times in one day? His biggest issue was trying to beat a higher performance car. I been in that situation before and it only leads to mistakes. I was trying to beat a 09 Viper ACR with my Evo (i ended up beating him) but in the process i made ALOT of mistakes because i wasnt going my pace. I was to focused on trying to beat a Viper.
He shouldn't push it past what HE'S capable of. Surely that car could have passed the Porsche, but could he? Quite evidently not. I wonder if a spoiler of some sort would help him maintain control. Personally, the matte CF and those white decals are offputting. I would have preferred a glossy CF.
what's the point of going to the track it you don't take the opportunity to push your limits, 'cause that's the only way you can learn your limits and eventually extend them
I work at a car wash/detail shop and I had an Evolution X come through a couple of weeks ago. I live in Canada so this was the first Evo I have driven (the X being the first Canadian legal Evo) so I was excited! I jump in this thing and I stall it! Embarrassed, I roll the thing to the customer and he tells me that he stalled it too after putting the new clutch in. This thing had just under 500 hp! I thought my first would have been stock! Nice cars on my channel. Check me out!
I think he just needs some more training, modifying it to 400whp when he's not used to the standard power is a red flag. Him spinning out 3 times on the track is already a red flag that he should take it easy.
do you even own a evo or track at car? You are telling this guy to put a spoiler on a stock evo for better grip? How about tires? or coilovers? sway bars?. All your doing with a spoiler is putting more downforce on the rear of a AWD car that is stock. The very first thing a person should do when tracking a EvoX is change the brake fluid to something that has a higher boiling point. The stock tires on the Evo is good for a new driver or a driver new to the car.
Too bad, the driver does alot of risky maneuvers. Especially since it was his third time off the track. Those evo's are supposed to be almost impossible to lose control, unless you are an idiot. The evo's 4wheel with the computer is supposed to be godlike.
I might be wrong and I will check it out, I was told the same thing from other companies that offered the same thing, but there was a 90 dollar membership fee, and the parts even with the so called discount were for example, 800 dollars for an set of shocks from some company I nevere heard of. in the end, I never bought anything and kissed my 90 dollars good bye...hope the Smoking tire is Different
At least give courtesy to the slow drivers you are coming up upon, to pass in safe zones where you are not at risk of hitting (for instances, entering a corner). It was an open course amateur track day, so that was kinda a given. even though it didnt show who was at fault, you were the faster car and should have slowed. yah it may have messed up your fastest lap of the day, but thats just part of open practice. sorry to nit pick your driving, but through experience you'll learn.
