Hi Tom, just inherited my grandfathers Keech Banjolele, possibly 1932ish, it has two broken strings, to get tuned to GCEA, is that also the name of the strings I need to buy? Stupid question probably. 😆😆

Standard light ukulele strings should work.

I've never tuned it. But I'm sure it would change the tone. But not pitch.

I had to tighten it up or I would have never had gotten the banjolele tuned. Found a video on RU-vid teaching how to do that, then I just went around drumming on the edges to see if it was tuned the same all around. It was much easier to tune once the head was all firm and tight.

@@ElisaFrancaV That makes sense. It would be very difficult to tune it if the head were too loose. So glad you got it figured out. I've drummers do that very thing hundreds of times.

Tuned guitars, hammered dulcimers, violins for years. I cannot follow you for some reasons. Either my banjo has wrong strings or tuning order is upside down.

I usually tune my uke with the top string being G, then going down through C, E, A. Just to clarify, have I been tuning my uke wrong this whole time? Or are you switching the order up because it's a different instrument? I'm soooo new to music HELP! (:

I am confused. My Dog Has Fleas is MDHF not GCEA

Truth be told I don't know the origin of "My dog has fleas" but it was never intended as an acronym of the strings but of a child's way to remember the movement of the pitches.

Wow, thanks for this video. Yours is the fourth tuning I've found and the first that sounds right (to my untrained ear). Are there songbooks specifically for this instrument?

i string my tenor banjolele (and tenor ukuleles) with baritone strings. then tune it accordingly. you are allowed to experiment some.

If I had one of these, I'd tune it like a mandolin, GDAE, to play Irish music on it like a tenor banjo.

Hi Tom, what tuner are you using in the video? The Banjolele has a nice, different, sound from the uke.

It's just an old saying. It's been associated with uke since the dawn of time.

I know I'm late to the conversation, but the Hawaiian "ukulele" translates roughly to "jumping flea". Maybe the mnemonic "my dog has fleas" sung to GCEA is an homage to the jumping flea? Anyway, any advice on tuning a banjolele to Chicago style tuning for a tenor banjo?(DGBE) Would I just need a set of nylon tenor banjo strings, then tune accordingly? I'm not sure if it would even work, as the banjolele has such a short scale.

I would but my nails are awful. I've had to develop a technique that accommodates shorts nails because I have to keep them short or they will break. I'm sure there are some good videos out there about it.

Can you show where to place the bridge please? I look a tutorial and it says same exact distance from fret 1 to fret 12 that from fret 12 to the bridge. Is that correct? Thanks

That is correct. And if you play the harmonic at the 12th fret it should be the same as the 12th fret fretted. Use a tuner for precision. If it’s flat move the bridge a little towards the fretboard. If it’s sharp then the opposite direction.
