Tunnel and overhead wiring inspection

This is one of those maintenance jobs that is good to do every now and then, from this point of view it is possible to spot potential problems that would otherwise be hidden. The Eltham South Electric Tramway is a 1:24 scale garden tramway that uses a 32v DC overhead wiring system. There is a mixture of trolley poles and pantographs in use, today our inspection vehicle is W5 class 739 which has a trolley pole. There has been little maintenance of the overhead wiring system over the last year and many areas are in degraded condition, keep an eye out for them in the video.

Just a thought - my grandfather was a mine electrician, the last tunnel where the panto has scraped the roof, it may be subsidence but given its solid nature more likely the bottom has come up slightly due to pressure on the roof and sides (common in tunnels and mines) the traditional solution to which is to "bate the bottom* i.e. take up the track, remove material from underneath and relay - if there is a concrete base it may be from beneath this pushing upwards. A very enjoyable video as ever.

That's quite possibly what has happened, like you say the easiest fix will almost certainly be to dig out the floor and lower the track a bit. Part of the fun of garden railways is all the interesting real world engineering problems.

That's a very nice garden railway😊😊 I saw all your videos. Need to clean the weeds along the line !

They're mostly native plants or deliberately planted garden plants, not weeds!

I think of plants not as weeds because they can make the place look more natural and more realistic removing plants destroys this look entirely.

Thanks for making these fantastic videos. It's lovely to watch the trains and trams trundle up and down in different weather and at different times of day, but also super interesting to see the working railway (love the solution for trimming vegetation from the line, for example).

I echo all of the following sentiments. Wonderful video. It reminded me of the mid to late 1950s when in Ottawa, Canada, me and my friend Doug disconnected the overhead connection by pulling the rope that held the trolley pole in place. We got yelled at but we were fast on our feet !!

Another fascination video. I guess there's always work to be done. My girlfriend wondered if there was a risk of shock when you were touching the wires, I said it was probably only 12 or 24 volts. I'm not sure if you've ever explained the electrical system? It'd be interesting to hear how you have it set up, and what the voltage drop is like. Thanks for a wonderful video, and we eagerly await the next upload!

Super model tramway. The trolley pole really stays on the wire very well.

More brilliant stuff Alexander! Still amazes me how good the conductivity is, especially in the conditions! Do you use any spray , Inox/CRC on the wire? Also is that a pulley on the pole or is it just rubbing , as it really hangs on to the wire..LOL. The night scenes are fantastic and I think you should do more if you can. Thanks again for a brilliant ride! Cheers Gregg.

I don't use any sort of lubricant or similar on the wire normally. I've experimented with graphite trolley pole heads though which seem to work really well, not just for electrical conductivity but also the lubrication means the poles track through all the overhead wire frogs better. I haven't yet found a fully practical design though, the experimental version used a little bit of pencil graphite. Otherwise the trolley poles are either steel or bronze, this tram has fixed (sliding) bronze trolley pole heads. Other trams have brass wheels, which operate smoothly but aren't as reliable for electrical contact.

Great video - how often do you have to repair the overhead wiring? As in replacing or reconnecting ir?
@melbournesparks3828
@melbournesparks3828 9 месяцев назад
Not often, probably only a couple of times a year when there has been a kangaroo or rabbit or something trip on it. The wooden poles last 3-5 years so they need to be replaced from time to time, but I just do it as required.

Superb railway. Great to travel along it at night. Do you get snails in the tunnels? We in the UK, at least were I am, suffer from great numbers of snails that like to congregate in any covered area? Again a brilliant video. 👍👍👍

Very interesting video! Looking at the complexity of the overhead wiring infrastructure, I'm wondering if it would be easier to power the locomotives with lithium batteries... have you ever tried battery powered locos?
@melbournesparks3828
@melbournesparks3828 9 месяцев назад
I have some battery powered units where the real thing is either steam or diesel, but the reality is the overhead infrastructure takes a lot less maintenance than batteries do. You have to charge batteries and keep track of the charge state whereas electric trams are always ready to go. It would be a lot more expensive too.

3:07 yikes thats concerning to me. Have you ever worried about setting fires to the vegetation from the arcing? Have you had any fires?

how does the power pole not slide off the electrical cable? if that makes sense, the stick part from the train.... i dont know the terms
@melbournesparks3828
@melbournesparks3828 3 месяца назад
That part is called the trolley pole. It has a small U shaped part on the end that sits on the wire.

Why did you do this in the dark?
@melbournesparks3828
@melbournesparks3828 9 месяцев назад
It's much easier to see the wires in the dark, during the day the sun shining on the camera would be too bright.
