Inkuyo
Tupac Katari
By Gonzalo Vargas (BMI)
Tupac Katari is the name of one of the last Inca warriors that tried to free his people from the slavery they had fallen into after their conquest. Before him there were many warrior leaders like Tupac Amaru in Peru and Thomas Katari in Bolivia. They organized armies and fought hard against the Spanish. Tupac Katari, whose real name was Julian Apaza, took the names of both leaders Tupac Amaru and Thomas Katari as a way to honor them and became one of the earliest activists of the Independence Movement that followed. On his death (1781), Katari's final words were "I die but will return tomorrow as thousands."
