As a kid I lived in Malawi. In our boarding school there were some massive trees outside the dining hall where green touracos liked to play (we called them coreys). One day I got a fright when there was this blinding flash of red from the wings of one of them... only then did I remember I'd never seen them fly or open their wings. I now paid much more attention... and soon I saw some of the touracos fly to the eucalyptus trees farther away- they really looked awkward with their short round wings, flying was very hard and noisy work! But they were so majestic and special that I always remember them fondly.

It was a magical time in Malawi- the most beautiful country in Africa. We moved back to England just before the Mocambique civil war which is a bordering country. Malawi welcomed all refugees from the war with open arms- so that its population shot up to 300 per cent... unsustainable- and Malawi is still devastated. I went back 10 years ago and was heartbroken to see unique habitats destroyed, unique species extinct... deforestation on the highlands: Mount Mlange is now bare rock... Lake Malawi cichlids are being bred in London, but that's a stop-gap. Malawi is a microcosm of our fragile and threatened planet. Too sad.

They kind of look like a cross between a parrot and a pigeon. Obviously characterful and intelligent birds. Hopefully you will get another Turaco someday and the story will continue.

Stephen Swift As much as I wish they could care for another of any animal they lose, I kinda also wish that they don’t get another, because the best life they could live is in the wild, so I wish for them not to have another due to all of them being free or in nice zoos, ya know?
@mariamd786

You are right, they do look like a pigeon parrot cross

James Rawson I kind of agree that any kind of bird has a better life flying around in the wild living naturally. I was just commenting that if a bird or animal had to be looked after, the Animal Wonder people would really know how to look after its needs and make it as happy as possible.

One more unique thing about Turacos- they have two unique feather pigments, including the only true green pigment in any bird! They are fun birds to watch. Thanks for sharing your experiences with these birds. I know you took good care of them.
@pendlera2959
@pendlera2959 5 лет назад
What's the other unique pigment?
@BioBush
@BioBush 5 лет назад
Their red wing feather pigment is called turacin, and the green body feather pigment is called turacoverdin. Both are only in turacos.
@pendlera2959

Thanks! I have a passing interest in genetics and natural biological pigments. Do you know of any true purple/violet pigments?
@BioBush
@BioBush 5 лет назад
What a cool interest! There's the traditional Tyrian purple that Romans used. Cyanin is not true purple, but could look that way.
@pendlera2959
@pendlera2959 5 лет назад
Thanks, I'll have to look those up. If you're interested in pigments, you should check out Bruce MacEvoy's website. He did a lot of very through testing on the pigments used in watercolors. www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterfs.html He also has a lot of very interesting and in-depth essays on color and light, plus some other topics that I haven't dug into yet. You kind of have to click around for them though. www.handprint.com/index.html Part of the reason I'm interested in biological pigments is because I like thinking about how things would be different on an exoplanet, yet still physically possible (sci-fi lover, here). There are so few blues and purples on our planet, yet those are my favorite colors. I like to think about what would need to be different for them to be common, with browns, reds, and yellows being the rarities.

Have you ever considered setting up live webcams for any of the critters? I'm sure lots of people would love to watch them go about their daily routine. You could probably set up a stream and receive more donations from the viewers. Everyone loves seeing cute animals being so well taken care of, even if they're just taking naps. Perhaps let viewers donate to send small treats to the animals on-camera? Up to a limit for the animals' health, of course. Keep up the great work, looking forward to more videos!

I first saw turacos in the documentary series "Life of Birds" as a kid. I was quite surprised when I saw one being kept as a pet in an episode of "Full House" (it was the pet of Michelle's kindergarten class, I believe, and she accidentally caused it to escape--when she tried to lure it back with bread at one point, I was like "That's not gonna work, Michelle! Turacos eat fruit, not bread!") and as a wild bird in the 90s adaptation of "The Parent Trap".

At the turn of the Century, I passed some pet store in Greenwich Village NYC that put what I think were two turacos in the window while it was warm outside. A sign said they needed to be moved farther indoors while it was colder.

I’m sorry about those two beautiful birds, losing someone you’ve put your heart and soul into is never easy. Recently my cockatiel Jake (24) hurt his wing and I had to anticipate where he wanted to go so I could carry him there, of course he took advantage of the extra attention I piled on him, and thankfully he made a great recovery!!! When I started raising tiels 30 years ago books said average lifespan was 16-20 years but I think they must have meant in the wild, do you know average lifespan. My birds have never been caged and my other one is 17.

I didn't know Turaco were as interactive as parrots were. I did however get to interact with a baby white cheeked Turaco at a bird store. It was still syringe fed, and covered in black feathers, but was already extremely agile. It was able to jump up and down from the container it was in, as well as across from one edge to another. It wasn't skiddosh, but it didn't seem to seek interaction either. All in all, definitely a beautiful bird.

Not all Turacos are colourful. The Grey Loerie (Kwe-voel or Grey Go-Away Bird) is a large loud turaco with massive populations in Johannesburg and the Highveld in South Africa. It is plain grey although it has a very long crest and hundreds of them flapping around is quite something to see.
