Thank you so very much for making this spectacular performance available. Powerfully sung, beautiful orchestra, costumes and staging over the moon. The ending a bit different than I expected but masterfully congruent with the storyline.

I'm glad you enjoyed the opera. This Nuria Espert production is my favorite ( I prefer it to Zeffirelli's) and the ending makes more sense to me as well.

I've always been appreciative of Puccini and Verdi and a few others for their interest in far away culture such as this masterpiece by Puccini with the Orient : The accented musical score. They are the gods of opera. ps: I have no time for all the modern crap (it IS !!) being foisted, above all by the New Met. I see about 12 performances each year there...... And please......, Thank You !!@@librettosinenglish4032

I don’t understand half of the comments (I’m guessing English isn’t their first language for many based on grammar) but this was amazing. Ending was unexpected, but overall wow. This is such a fantastic opera. One of the things I always found fascinating about Puccini is how exotic he sounds. My first and only Puccini that I’ve watched/listened through before this was Manon Lescaut, and I remember thinking how exotic it sounded, especially for being set in France. But the exoticism really lends itself here in Turandot since it’s set in China; though some of the plot and characters might be a little racist, the music sounds quite authentic (of course, that’s me, an American with little eastern musical experience beyond the stuff that makes it into oriental-inspired arrangements for string orchestras, saying that, so that might not be accurate). Puccini really did make a Chinese opera, while preserving the elegance and romantic gestures of Western music. Nessun Dorma is a great example of this: when we hear the aria on its own, it sounds completely different than the rest of the opera, the epitome of romantic opera. But when you hear the echo before he launches into the aria, you can hear the eastern influence. Puccini never ceases to astonish me when it comes to switching between western and cultural musical styles and blending the two together. As far as this production goes, the set was amazing. I also really liked all the singers, especially Ping, Pang and Pong. I got a few laughs and almost tears from it over all. Two things I disliked though: one, I would prefer if you just embedded the subtitles in the video, not in RU-vid, so that I can watch it in full screen. The other thing was with this production. Though I loved the singers, many of them sang so forcefully that I couldn’t make out most of the words. Usually when I listen to an opera, I can make out some common words in the operas (think traitor in Don Giovanni, or contract in The Ring Cycle). This time, though, I had a hard time with that. I thought for sure I’d be able to make out stranger, but I couldn’t, so that’s a thing. Overall, 9/10 stars. Definitely subscribing and going here for opera performances when I feel the urge.

First off, I'm glad you like this production. Personally, I prefer Nuria Espert's to Franco Zeffirelli's, finding it more artistic and elegant in my humble opinion. As for the decision not to embed subtitles: I avoid embedding subtitles to ensure a broader reach in audience understanding. Embedding subs limits comprehension to English speakers, whereas using closed captions allows viewers to enjoy the opera with subtitles in their preferred language through Google Translate. Although translations may not be perfect, this approach aims to cater to opera lovers worldwide, regardless of their native languages.

I'm ever so sorry I was trying to look up.the translation of Amapola and it ended here.By all means I have to post another comment.Turandot,by our great Puccini, was his last opera. In fact it was left unfinished and had to be terminated by Alfano and his great friend Toscanini.Toscanini was the master's best friend. He had directed all his operas and wanted this last one to shine as the sun. That s why he had above all to look for the best tenor possible. And that tenor was of course at the time Miguel Fleta. He didn't know how he would react because they quarrelled a lot everytime Toscanini scolded him for not respecting his master's wishes. One day the same Puccini appeared on stage to have some words with Fleta. When he left,,Fleta took it with T.and told him that he was just an old man directing an orquestra.Instead of that HE was the divo everyone wanted to see. Anyway he accepted and it was shown in La Scala in Milan for the first time in 1926.Its a curious thing because one year earlier he also was the one to sing Amapola for the first time.A truly grat song by Jose Maria Lacalle. But going back to Turandot, his interpretation of Prince Calaf was astonishing and the ovation unending.Alfano and Toscanini could finally breath and the Italians loved him so much they ended calling him Mikele Fleta. The only sad thing about this all is the fact that the recording failed on that first day together with the cameras. They could only save a few seconds of the audio.A real potty.I have a wealthy friend who says he would give a great amount of money if he could go back to those times. He would seat in the first rows to have a good view of his idol singing the very first Nessum Dorma. Fleta triumphed and had to travel a lot and finally died being only forty. He died due to lung problems because he was so generous that after the concerts he came outside the theatres to sing something to the poor people who couldn't pay for a seat.He even took a little piano outside with him..Because he had been very poor and didn't die rich thus he gave a lot of money to friends and family. He lived and died in La Coruña only thirty metres away from my house. There is a little plaque that says so.He died looking at the sea..What a Spanish National glory. But he wasn't treated that way even having composed the anthem of Riego which was the anthem of the old Republic.Maybe Italians should have had their way and make him Italian.MIKELE Fleta, the first Prince Calaf would never had been forgotten.

What an interesting staging....compared to Vienna & Napoli in Dec 33 real excellent with "China-Look", ok, absolutely right.......and here we have other singers than in Austria and in Italy.....1:16:30 tenor remarkable, but without the high note .....but much better than the tenors in Vienna and Napoli, oh much better .....what a difference , here we have a real Calaf😊, not a true one as Corelli , but a real calaf-sounding tenor

Fabio sang the part there as written without the unwritten high Cs. He sang high notes throughout the opera. For a skinny guy, he had a huge voice. I was an extra at the Metropolitan Opera when he sang Radames with Zajic, Sweet, and I can't honestly remember who the Amonasaro was. Fabio was wonderful 😊

@@clefnoteproductions6695 oh yes, I know about his excellent voice, wish him on stage in Vienna and not Mr Kaufmann....and indeed, this high C is a tradition by the tenors , we will find it sometimes in the history of the opera .....thanks for answer, always welcome
