My guess is, head gasket seal was lost. I didn't see you retorque the heads after initial warmup. This used to be a thing in the 70's when using copper head gaskets. Pull'um and see!

Andrew, double check the torque on the studs, I have the same ARP 2k studs, when I torque mines everything was good, then a knowledgeable person (machine shop) told me to loose them and torque them again. Also while you are putting pressure thru the radiator try to turn the engine manually! Maybe the head gasket is seal with no boost but when boost gets in the chamber the cylinder pressure is far more than 20 psi.

This was my guess. Most definitely would also compression test and see if two cylinders on the same bank may share low compression, due to the bridge in the head gasket between cylinders possibly being compromised.
@DesertRatRacer

Like you were saying the 20 psi on the overflow probably doesn't recreate the problem due to heat or actual cylinder pressure. Like some other comments a leak down test is where its at. If you don't have a leak down tool. You can also use a compression tester line hooked to an air source instead of the gauge. Then pump air into each cylinder while on tdc until you see or hear where the air is escaping. Maybe start at 60 psi, lock the engine, or ramp up the air from low as the air can move the piston in a perfectly sealed cylinder. Then you can narrow down the problem when you discover the leak. Also according to the max performance 4.6 book they don't recommend cometic mls gaskets for boosted applications only NA. Then standard MLS up to 20+ psi, and copper gasket with stainless lock wire / groove for over 25 psi. Also for street cars silicone rtv around oil / water passages... Applied to both sides of the gasket sparingly. For drag race only permatex high tack on the gaskets and crc block sealer to the cooling system.

Rotten luck bro. I hope the engine is OK. You really need to strip down the engine to check everything for damage(fingers crossed). I was amazed at how MEAN the engine sounded at the track!

I've been there so many times and my turbo 2v only made about 700. I rebuilt it 6 times and cost me well over 20k. Got it running and dumped it for 9200 buck and my life has greatly improved. I have a stockish 2016 Camaro SS that I road race and auto x and every time I start to do a built motor I remember the long painful road. Sorry to see this happen. Your situation is probably different than mine cause your attitude is still good.

I've been there boss. I know you're tearing it down to nothing because of the H20, but you're not gonna find anything wrong. Had almost exact setup, same thing happened after I thought it was good. The dude from across the pond is right IMO. About those heads warping. Changed to a iron Cobra block, MHS stage 3 pi heads with MLS Cometic head gaskets....no leaks at 28 psi. Anything is possible though. You gotta pay to play in this game. Good luck.

Compression test it. And see what cylinder is the suspect before you rip it apart. Sometimes you won't see things visually and you'll be pissing in the wind. Also a trick I've used is to take the compression hose off the gauge and get an adapter to an air chuck. Fill the cylinder with air and leave the rad cap off. If it bubbles then you know what to do. Fill each cylinder

@akautosport
@akautosport 5 лет назад
I'm also going to guess that the head gasket area is the culprit. A lot more pressure in the cylinders than the 16-20psi from the cooling system. You can probably rule out the freeze plugs after that pressure test. I'm not an expert but I've done a few motor rebuilds and that's all I can think of. Hope it helps. PS: Not sure how your setup is now with the oil filter relocation but I remember the oil coolers can fail and mix coolant with out. If you have coolant line in that area check it over. Best of luck.

I had a head gasket that would leak compression into the coolant system when it got warm. Let it cool and it would run fine. Took a while to figure out cuz I didn't want to pull the heads. Just pull em, gasket and studs are cheaper than a rebuild

Head Gasket. Boost is causing the head to lift, shift or whatever. Need boost pressure to push the coolant into the cylinder. Could also be a a machining issue with the new sleeves. Were your sleeves wet or dry type? Did any of the spark plugs have coolant on them? Do a compression check to see what kind of readings you're getting. Start narrowing it down.

@wastedwagesmercuryman6018 5 лет назад
There would have to be a lot of pressure to pop out a freeze plug! With cosmetic Gaskets i usually run the engine dry to get some heat in the block/heads, loosen up the head studs in reverse order and retighten in order! Ive had them lift before and since preheating block dry haven't had a failure since with over 20 psi of boost on 13:1 compression!

Maybe worth a shot letting the car get warm and then doing the leak test. IIRC it's an aluminum block you have and maybe the slight expansion is allowing water to pass at a freeze plug or something.

Check the torque on your studs, I know you cleaned the threads when you assembled it but you could’ve pulled the threads on one of them. Or you have a crack somewhere. You’re not running enough to boost I wouldn’t think to cause an issue. Unless you have a deck surface issue. You might check the deck with a straight edge. Or you had a sleeve walk on ya.
@94blowncobra94

if it was a head gasket would seem to have combustion pressure in the cooling system
@finnroen2334
@finnroen2334 5 лет назад
The combination stock length ARP studs and 3 layer MLS head gaskets have give most Cosworth owners loads of problems here in Scandinavia. When the engine heats up and grows, nothing but the heads themselves gives way. Then one loses clamping force and the head gasket starts leaking. One other thing. Boost rules so I never understood why high compression ratio should be used in a turbocharged engine. The rapid pressure rise and pressure curve in the combustion camber becomes brutal and liftes the head(s) and destroys parts. Check out so called "Soft heads" for boosted engines. A 80 mm BW turbocharger pushes 50 psi easily, so high compression ratio is not neccessary to get horsepower even if the fuel can handle it. IMO.
@andrewlavender08
@andrewlavender08 5 лет назад
Finn Roen the static Compression Ratio is 11.5:1 which seems high for a boosted engine but my cams are very aggressive and have a lot of overlap that bleeds off compression. My dynamic compression ratio is 9.9:1
@finnroen2334
@finnroen2334 5 лет назад
@@andrewlavender08 WOW, I think that is a lot for a engine with only 4 head studs around each cylinder. Remember Gen 1 SBC has five bolts around each cylinder and traditionally this has always been an advantage compared to Ford 302 and 351 engines when boosting them. The LSX engines got 6 bolts around each cylinder to handle the stress. I also think that the TF heads with squish areas need more ignition retard than the quenchless heads you ran before. images.ecosia.org/PSgvyH0WX3pv5ApQ9qPB1LNDeaw=/0x390/smart/http%3A%2F%2Fst.hotrod.com%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F21%2F2010%2F06%2Fhrdp_1006_09_o-trick_head_combustion_chamber-next_to_fords_stock_one.jpg I believe one of the reasons low budget LS engines works so well is the rather open style combustion chamber shape. Here is picture of a trick to slow the combustion speed and slow the pressure rise in a boosted engine: www.speednik.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2015/03/chamber-softening-1-custom.jpg

That's a tough one as there's so many changes this year... Cometic MLS gaskets are tough but not invincible. I've seen them blow quite often and don't start leaking until the engine is hot and the cylinder pressure exceeds that of the coolant. That is my first guess. Second since you had the block machined and sleeved I would do a leak down test real quick before you remove the heads. That may pinpoint the problematic area or areas. I'd verify that when the block was sleeved the the water jacket was not cut into or damaged in any way. I've personally seen a few 4 cylinder Honda motors the machine shop got carried away with and they leaked coolant under high pressure/temps. Either stress fractures or just plain machined too far causing weak spots and even blatant holes straight down into the pan.

@bluezdr

I'm definitely concerned about the amount of coolant that was in your oil pan for the system to hold 20 psi....but hear me out for a second. I've blown a few head gaskets (both figuratively and literally) and what I wonder is if you blew what I call a flapper. It's tore in such a way that with the motor running it pushes the broken part open to allow seepage. You push from the coolant side without the motor running and it wedges it back closed where it should be. I think that is a plausable explanation. My concern goes back to the amount of coolant in the pan. I don't know if you ran the car again after you shut it down but if you didn't... Then I'll bet that gasket went as soon as your 2-step kicked in at the tree. Your saving grace would be that the car only ran for maybe a total of 8 or 9 seconds after that point before you shut it down...even if it was balls to the wall just over half of the time. Best wishes for good luck bro.
