One thing you missed on Plus/4..., Press F1 to change the color of the car, (a feature taken from the arcade machine OutRun2SP). 😎 BTW, you may want to change your video title to make this video easier to find in the RU-vid search, "Outrun" is one word, remove the forward slash from Plus/4 so it's Plus4, maybe add the word "comparison". Or add these as tags?
Of course the C64 version is better. But it's a great port for the Plus 4. Don't forget, the Plus 4 only has 2 audio channels and no hardware sprites! Although it has more colors.
Very nice comparison. The only missing comparison is the end sequence (if there is a nice end sequence, i am not sure if i ever drove to the finish line :-)
TO Plus/4 is the same game, but is a very different game, but again is the same. It cannot reach neither the 50MHz road frequency nor the many side objects along its side due to the needing of software sprites, which steal time to be calculated, and burn away some additional 8K (!) to work! Because of this, road bumps, weather effects and crashing collisions can't be included on Plus/4. The main difference, however, is the turbo usage, which has been totally revolutionised. All the power ups and score system have been changed in order to cope with a new good balancing of the game, and the faulty score on C64 has been fixed into a new working one. The Course Map has been moved into the intro, instead of loading it fulfilling the whole memory and then reloading the whole engine. Jeroen Tel's musical score on C64 is no less than cool, but fails in cover the original OST by YAS, whereas Csabo has rewritten the tunes by compising fantastic hybrids crossing both the coinop and the C64 ones! Those are the most evident differences, making it the same game and a new game at the same time. Overall, a frantic ride and a very enjoyable derivative pseudoconversion. Ah, of course the ending is 98% the same 😉
I´ve completed this really nice game and have also seen the ending now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n37lczI_GQ4.html A really great game!
Probably everyone here knows the story of the 264 line justhaving been developed to clear the storage rooms of 4416 RAMs. So the whole project was more like keeping expenses in control instead of actually making profit. But still I think they should at least have given the TED some sprites.
