2000 Toyota Tacoma 5vze Turbo Build!
(Pictures of the build process and Videos are towards the end)
Made 350whp/400tq with 91oct on a dynojet tuned by TurboJoe. At 18% drivetrain loss the 5vze is making 413hp/472tq at the crank!
Engine internals are entirely stock
I am running larger injectors, walbro 255 fuel pump, CX Racing GT35 68/82 BB turbo @ 11psi, Haltech 750 Standalone Ecu, Turbosmart 38mm external wastegate

i really need to swap to manual trans. the auto in mine gets real unhappy at that boost level. keep it detuned at 8psi now. been turbod for 4 years now with no issues though!

Very nice! Not sure what engine management you’re using but that could help sort that issue with the auto trans, however having 3 pedals is always more fun!🤘🏼

@@Moar_Throttle aem fic6 and a snowperformance meth kit. the auto transmission is controlled by the ecu so you have to run a piggyback.

You’re killing it dude! I’m planning on doing something similar very soon. Did you feel you needed to re-gear after the turbo? What did it do to your mpg after?

Thanks man! I didn’t need to because they’re already 4.88s, even before it was boosted it had good acceleration with the 39” tires. Mpgs are pretty much the same, maybe +1mpg if I completely stay out of boost. I’ve gotten about 200miles on about 14 gallons that’s loaded up with camping gear and pulling multiple grades. I’d say average is right around 15-16mpg. If I’m always in boost or doing pull after pull it’ll kill a tank in a couple hours easily lol

That’s awesome. I really need to get a better tune for my turbocharged bagged 5vzfe. Right now the truck has URD piggy back and I don’t think it’s really working anymore. Because my truck wants to break up around 3k and only wants to hold 2lbs.

Did you install a resistor in-between the Cam (+) and Cam (-), as well as the Crank (+) and Crank (-)? Those sensors share a common ground and get a dirty signal from Toyota, which your piggyback amplifies and sends to your ECU, which it hates. I had interference issues on my turbo 5vz with an AEM piggyback that also wouldn't let me rev over 3k. I started with a 2.2k resistor and went up from there until I had no more issues breaking up, ended up being 8.8k for me. Hope this helps a year later..

Piggybacks and these Toyota ecus are really really finicky, that’s why I opted to run the standalone. I wanted to get the maximum out of my build and simple put, buy once cry once. Sure it’s more pricy than a simple piggy back but the results are day and night.

Damn that's sick build dude. These engines are so underpowered I think a turbo build would be the best for my 4runner. But I wonder how it will handle an crawling in 4low

Thanks man! Mine does perfectly fine on the trails in 4low and rock crawling, the engine itself acts like a stock motor until I hit boost. It’s all in the engine management though, I’m using a standalone ecu and not the stock one.

What intercooler set up did you go with? Tryna find something similar but the styles are not angled like this and more just a straight rectangle with dual ends

Thanks man I appreciate it! I’m using 650cc injectors from lce engineering. The only thing I’d probably change is putting the largest intercooler that’ll fit(which I have now). I was using a small version in this video which was only good for about 300hp, so the intake air temps would get really hot after one boost pull, the one I have now is rated at 700hp and completely fixed the issue.

Looks like you just cam off 87 onto 680 North in the middle of San Jose right there at the end! I hope I’m right cause that’s rad. I’ve got a 96’ 4runner 3.4l I’ve been wanting to turbo cause I’ve already got a newer computer and Bigger injectors and 340lfm race pump with -6 an full lines from tank thru cleanable Filter in the outside of the frame rail for Easy maintenance! But this is next! Oh I lived in San Jose for close to 20 yeasts and that looks like a freeway exchamge I knew pretty well cause it’s one of the only tunnel style exchamge I’m South Bay!

Ball bearing oil and water cooled. It hits full boost right around 2.8k rpm. I totally recommend it

Sure thing man!🙌🏼 in my opinion it is the perfect size for this engine, the Gt3576R definitely provides a happy powerband. Full boost kicks in right around 2800

I want to see the dyno specs please showing 400 hp coming out of a V6 i have a super charger on mine its putting out 275hp and that's a lot for a 3.4 v6 im just curious over all i like what you did very nice .

You can pause the video at 2:20, that shows the dyno sheet with the numbers. Superchargers are parasitic so it “takes power to make power” while turbos aren’t they spin freely from the exhaust gases. Depending on the size of the turbo there’s a lot more CFM they produce than a supercharger as well, Way easier to make a lot more power. Cool, I will look into a turbo setup later, it’s expensive to do the required maintenance and upkeep of a roots type blower, especially this 4th gen TRD I’ve had in the truck for 125k miles. You’ve got to keep the oil in the nose drive fresh and topped off when you run the 2” pulley I got from Pulley Boys. Supercharger drag is real, and turbocharged engines can ultimately out produce supercharged engines, but the reason you see them on Top Fuelers is TIME. It takes too long in a sub four second run to build full boost before hitting the finish line. Depends on how you drive, mine has a 4.88 rear with P275R55-17’s all the way around the ‘98 2wd T100, and mine is sudden acceleration, it just feels great, we all do it, but the supercharger runs immediately to 11 psi and builds to 13.4 on the top. You can’t get boost that fast on a turbocharged engine, so it’s “Buh-Bye-Ya” from me to you and your highway domination turbocharger setup in the stoplights.

around 15-18, ecu will be a problem around 8 if u dont upgrade fuel system which is what im doing cuz ecus are expensive!

It depends. I feel like it can be destructive at any boost level if the right precautions aren’t taken. If no short cuts are taken I’d say they’re pretty happy around 8-10psi. After that it can be a roll of the dice on a stock internal engine, simple upgrades like ARP rod bolts and head studs will complement higher boost such as 12-15 psi.
