573HP N/A is good.865 HP on the same engine with 20psi is weak sauce. Something was definitely wrong-they didn't even show the whole dyno sheet. There is some sort of control issue I think.
Exactly! something wasn’t right there, I was really disappointed with those boosted numbers, 20psi should’ve been around 1500. I thought with the 1400 block rating we would’ve seen 1000 at least. And what happened to the other guy? It’s like they just gave up, surely they wasn’t satisfied with those numbers, or maybe they did find something wrong and just hid it. If Holdener was performing these test I bet we would have seen some good numbers or if we didn’t at least we would know why. I’m trying to copy this build so it really was disappointing they let it go at that.
@@bigboreracing356 corrected numbers just allows you to “somewhat” compare to other dynos, correcting to specific atmospheric conditions, which doesn’t mean those numbers aren’t correct or close, it could go either way.
Terrible power for an 88mm turbo on a 408 cube engine. Especially on 22psi. This thing is a a boat anchor. I'd be too embarrassed to make a video making that low power on a combo like that. Sponsors will be pissed. 😂
I was thinking the same thing. Should have made at least a 1000hp at 15 lb of boost. I've seen stock 5.3 with big turbos make more power than that at the wheels lol
don’t matter it made 573hp on motor bro… 14.7psi will always double the n/a power.. with the proper size turbo and that’s a Pt88mm so it is proper..he said he put a 9lb spring in it. And turned the dial 5-6 times, let’s just say it was on 9lbs and nothing more so spring pressure before turning the dial that’s a 61% gain in atmosphere.. and 61% of 573hp is 349hp gain.. 573+349=922hp and that’s only on 9lbs. 15lbs that thing would be making 1100+ and he clearly said in the video it should be making 20lbs before he even turned the dial 3more times. And if you take a look in the video looks like they are stopping the pull early maybe it’s getting valve float and not making power after 5500 or maybe the cam specs suck. Maybe it’s the 3step colder plug they used. Never seen anyone go 3steps colder on a mild boost setup. I use br7ef on e85 & make almost the same power as him to the TIRE on 16psi, with a 82mm on a 366ci 6.0L
@@AtfSucks-govI’m even going to read the story you wrote, but stock bottom end 4.8’s can make this much power. A well built 408 turbo with the right size and boost should be making 1500 hp and not even break a sweat.
@@AtfSucks-gov by the sound of the pulls, they didn’t rev it high enough and I’d bet they were way too conservative on timing. My old 6.2 made 1210 on an engine dyno at 15lbs but that was on E85. Something is either hurt or tuning was terrible
@@bigboreracing356 it’s not about achieving or not achieving their goal, it’s about it taking over 20psi to add 350hp when it should have taken 10psi or so.
Dude, this was a give away engine. They're not trying to push it to it's limit for someone to destroy it and get a bad rep. It's over built on a safe tune. Just like every engine in every car, it's built for longevity. A BMW S58 3.0L inline 6 is rated at 525HP. New bigger turbos, injectors, tune, etc., they're making 1000HP on stock internals. So imagine factory internals that handled 1000HP only running 525HP. Overbuilt for longevity.
My goodness LoL I've made that kind of power with gen 4 sbe 4.8's and 5.3's with basically a badass hydrologic roller cam and pac and btr valve springs with stock 799's and even some very mildly ported 706's on methanol and with a cats wheel Borg s485 and a billet wheel badass s488 from forced inductions I know the 5.3 was making over 1000whp just based on weight and E.t my fastest pass with a 4.8 with the 85mm 1.15 t6 housing was a 5.57 @ 3200 pound and 5.44 with the big 88mm both had the same th400 butt different ptc converters specced by dusty bradford Holley EFI VP m1 a cheap 102 mm summit brand intake and throttle body and billet Atomizer 325 pounders I got a decent deal but didn't car forem all that much they would stuck open alot more than I cared for LoL I was turning the shit out of both shifting at 7300 and goin across the stripe at 7800-7900Rpm. If I built a 408 with those heads and a good rods and Pistons and it didn't make 1200 plus after The tune was halfway right I would be pissed lol it would definitely be on E90 or e85
@@bigboreracing356 "All MSD coils are made to our specifications and thoroughly tested. Also, the coils for the Pro Mag 12s and 44s, the HVC line of coils and our multiple spark LS coils are all made in the United States."
The only downside to OEM LS coils is some if not all have an auto-fire protection if you feed them excessive dwell. With the right plug & gap you shouldn't need more til you're putting 4 digits to the wheels.
I heard the reasoning for the 1 5/8" tube headers, but those seem tiny on a 408. Wish I could see what back pressure numbers were on that hot side. Should have 1 7/8" tube or even bigger cast turbo log for exhaust.
The bp is gonna be limited (or should I say raised) by the hot more than anything in a good combo. Exhaust to the turbo is nots important..even the stock manifolds can do 1k+
It’s so cute to watch their reactions. Can we see the dyno screen? It’s kinda old to just watch them clap their hands when the dyno ends. Show the data!
@@adamboyle3331 I’m fairly sure a licensed professional production company isn’t filming any screens and has capabilities to accomplish showing us that data by casting it. Not that hard.
Usually they do show the screen... when they don't, you know it was a crap run. Remember, products they show are also sponsors... so they did the best they could... even the company rep split before the final run. The engine also has a serious pause/hicup during acceleration on all the pulls they showed. That set up will eventually destroy a perfectly good 600hp LS, which I believe is a capital crime in some states.
Those headers were way too small! It honestly should have made that power on 7 to 8 psi! Something was radically off! I honestly hope you weren’t @ 21psi! A crappy 4.8 with a 160$ turbo will make over 800! I honestly think the headers were killing it, way way too small, probably should have been 2 in, @ did anyone verify timing ⏱? Or even check EGTS? High EGTS will tell you if timing is way too low!
@@bri-manhunter2654 Correct . And that`s not what It`s about. What`s driven by belt, takes efficiency out of all 4 strokes in a 4-stroke engine. If a random twin might take 1/5 of engine`s power at high rpm, a random turbocharger might take 1/25... But the guy said "None of the engine`s power`s being used" and that`s a huge mistake.
something is not right with the setup, I own a dyno shop and make that hp to the tire on 5.3s with less boost. You guys need to start using holley efi systems they are far better.
I agree. I'm making 560 whp with a bone stock 5.3 at 14 psi. With the suitcase full of money they threw at this thing, they should have been over 1100 at the crank.
Depends on the cam, compression, and timing used. But, as a dyno shop you should know all that🙃 21degrees of timing and 20Ib’s of boost, that was a hurt motor they were trying to hide.
I usually REALLY like these videos. I've been following this engine build series since part 1 was released on RU-vid. I know this video aired on tv a long time ago. I have to say though that this video was a pretty big disappointment. The way they came into this series at the beginning of this build really made it seem like they were going to show us what this engine could REALLY do. Now, they did show it producing some good horse power at the end, but I was not really "wowed" by the final result. It even seemed to me like there was something a little fishy going on with the motor during the dyno pulls. I'm not an expert by any means, but I just felt as tho the final result came up a little flat. Especially considering all of the talk in the video about 'how much power this whole build is capable of'.
Biggest change over the last 10 years is computer control over everything is WAY more granular and has more complete control letting us push engines way closer to the edge without pushing them over not a luxury they had in 2011 900hp back then was big big numbers ....2nd big change is our turbos are so much more efficient now ....just my 2 cents on why we look at the 900hp and go wtf we are jaded and forgot how hard it was to make that 1k mark 10years ago and be safe
Needs an electronic boost controller and back pressure sensor something badly wrong this thing should’ve made way more power it made power like numbers on for 5 pounds of boost. It had to of quit making power before 5200 RPMs for the torque to be higher than the horsepower indicating major back pressure issues.
What happened to the boost control solenoid? You had one sitting with all the parts on the bench, but then used a crappy manual boost controller on the dyno???
You guys should see what many, many others are doing with stock 4.8 liters. Imagine what those guys could get out of this engine. Guess you have to start somewhere. 👍
Something wrong here boys, at 20 psi this thing should’ve made way more power. The first clue was that you needed that boost tee to keep boost. Waste gate is faulty.
@@KE458S he's talking about the crap hanging off the front. there is no way that turbo setup is fitting in a engine compartment. who ever wins that thing is going to have to reengineer the exhaust and turbo.
No power is used, however power can’t be lost do to restriction and back pressure so using larger hotside can have huge gains on the higher rpm range but cause lack of spool and boost lag. Turbos like any power adder have +\-. Wheel to housing ratio and flow rate to psi can be a HUGE factor in true power. Love y’all keep up the good work. 2000hp or die
At 14 psi that motor would have made around 1350hp. At 10 psi it would be around 1100. Thats an 88mm turbo on 1 5/8 tubes. The wrong cam and wrong lifters were installed and they were blowing all their boost out of the exhaust valve.
Definitely not impressed. So many good components but a bad combination somewhere. Thats an easy 1000fwhp engine on low boost. I'm guessing the heads are he culprit. Oh and They still use that horrendous Royal Purple. I wouldn't use that stuff on my bicycle chain. School trained vs real world.
No power come free……ever, that cooling fan is way to close to the inter cooler as well, looks like a nice build but expected a lot more from a setup like this to be honest
Im sorry but this is the the first time ive seen (sort of) being spelled like that and im from Oklahoma and "sordve" is exactly how it is pronounced here lol. Not being an asss just thought it was funny because thats exactly how we say it TBH.
ARE THESE DYNO NUMBERS LEGIT? Gale Banks engine dynos his engines for 15 minutes continuously to make sure they can sustain the claimed numbers. WHO CARES if this engine hits 573 hp for 3 secs if it blows up on the street under sustained high rpm or loses 15% hp after a good heatsoak?
550 HP is a walk in the park for a 6.0. Let alone a 408. It needs more cam timing for the 6.0 let alone the 408. Those are numbers you’d get with a 6.0 SBE Gen 4 with a cam. That a 88 mm turbo on 20lbs of boost. It’s should be making 1200 HP at that boost level on a 408.
You never finished the 427 97 tbird. I'm thorough hurt and disappointed. All the chevy I have to watch and you can't even finish a bird or give me a good dodge or Plymouth car. Amc nothing what's going on over there.
Did anyone happen to see how shitty that deck surface was. They gave away a ticking time bomb. That mfer gonna blow a head gasket in no time. Deck surface was pitted and scratched to all kinds of hell.
Cool set-up, but im not sure if I care for that hot pipe going into the turbo should be nearly touching the pipe going right into the motor. Seems like it could create a heat issue
I just hope ther freshen up these engines before the giveaway and after the dyno pulls. Nothing worse then winning a motor from these guys with a spun bearing or hurt piston
How does the addition of the turbo lube-oil takeoff from the main oil gallery affect the rest of the system pressure? And, do you install, or recommend an engine oil cooler/radiator?
Sorry mate, at 2:29 wrong, a turbo DOES NOT work on exhaust FLOW. It works by taking the energy from the EXPANDING gases to drive the exhaust turbine, which are still burning and expanding after they've left the combustion chamber. This is why unlike say a supercharger, there is no power lost because that power is normally lost in a naturally aspirated engine.
I'm surprised they didn't run a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator, that would have automatically added fuel as boost increased 1:1 . Also the ECM should have pulled timing in proportionality too the boost increase. That way they wouldn't have to worry about changing timing manually. I'm running a Terminator X-max and it does all that automatically after initial set-up....Seems they weren't adding fuel and pulling timing as the low HP numbers verify....
Body language clearly shows this is a crap set up. A major miss/hicup during pulls is also a red flag. That's not a power adder, it's and LS destroyer. They did the best they could for the sponsor, but I wouldn't put that nonsense on my expensive 600hp LS that can go 300,000 miles without a sweat otherwise.
Wonder if it was having valve float issues. Hellion is known for high back pressure with resulting valve float on their Mustang kits due to poor manifold design.
Nah, this was mostly the wrong cam and wrong rocker set up. They were blowing their boost out the exhaust valve. The coked the crap out of that turbo also because the plug was WAAAAAY to cold.
People are making 1000 on stock bottom ends with these motors, ebay turbos, and bs cams. They threw money at this setup and it didn't yield anywhere close to the 1400hp they were claiming for the block.
That would go good in my pickup all these guys around here think there stock engines are the most powerful around I would like to show them with this engine
Would be interesting to see an engine running a turbo without ducting the output back to the engine. To see how much parasitic loss there is with the exhaust restriction.
3 port Mac valve. 15lb spring = 30psi turning up the duty 4 port watch out it’s going to the moon at a certain point with very minimal duty change. 5lb spring can make 60 on a 4port
VHT works great. Aside from a couple of touch ups, I've been running it on my drag truck for 7 years and it still looks good. I run 113 octane and it's never burnt off.
