I was in Istanbul earlier this year and saw prices rising to an extent that tourism could be in trouble in the coming year. (I wouldn't advise friends to visit right now). You rightly pointed out that the dollar pricing isn't spared this inflation, i.e. It's not simply a weak currency. As my tour guide pointed out this is pretty common in Turkiye and invariably the fault of poor fiscal management by the government.

As a Turkish I have a comment in the old video and I said our wage is too less, when we calculate minimum wage in dollar it was 200 or 300 dollar on old video but today 510 dollar but there is no change. Prices rising up in dollar. In the same time we have dollar inflation. After the 2023 elections Erdoğan has to fix the economy and he appointed a new minister, Mehmet Şimşek. I think he can fix the economy but as a turkish people it is difficult for us because he redesign the taxes. Everyday we heard a new taxes or taxes rate is rising. Something must change in turkey. We have many illegal immigrant, they are coming from syria, afghanistan, ukraine, russia etc. and their population in official number is 3 million but I think just İstanbul has 3 million illegal immigrant.

The cost will not go down because what was before is deflation meaning they were buying higher and selling cheap, sure people like it when it's deflation and hates inflation, that's normal but it's not good for the economy of the country as a whole, In Turkey, the prices rise not because the central bank printed so much money but because they buy commodities from other countries in dollars and it's the US that printed so much money and exported its inflation to the rest of the world,

The minimum salary in USD has reached an all-time high, and government workers' salaries have seen significant improvements in comparison. However, the major challenge lies in the high cost of living in Istanbul. Moving to other parts of Turkey offers a much easier life with affordable living expenses and decent food. The real problem is that the gap between people is expanding due to disparities in income distribution and economic opportunities. The tax system is not effectively capturing all income, leading to a significant portion of economic activity being informal. This informal sector not only evades taxes but also increases the demand for goods and services, contributing to inflationary pressures. For example, some individuals earn substantial income through informal, cash-based transactions (like selling goods or properties) without paying taxes. Meanwhile, white-collar workers in formal jobs face high automatic tax deductions, sometimes up to 40% or more. This disparity in tax compliance creates inequities, reduces government revenue, and distorts economic activities, potentially leading to inflationary pressures and economic inefficiencies.

Excellent summary of turkey s economic problem. The root cause is radical or too orthodox Islamic culture of around 55% of Turkish citizens who vote for a fanatic Muslim called erdogan even after economic Crisis hit during his previous period in power. the army tried to stop it like Egypt did when Islamic forces won elections in Egypt. but turkey s bad luck Islamic fanatics were more in turkey than modern open minded Turkish people. so, turkey got what most of its people wanted - Ottoman Empire like Islamic resurgence. But unfortunately they are finding it hard to put food on plate. Now they will all go to western countries and ask for sharia their instead of doing turkey by removing erdogan or becoming more liberal.

Not really , Turkey has always had a problematic currency , the reason Turkey currency / economy is in a bad shape is because Turkey imports more then it exports ,,, furthermore the entire world is becoming more expensive because the US and Western economies flushed a lot of printed dollars and Euros in covid and after 2008 crises , this affected inflation and since Turkey is part of the global economy its affected and it pays the price for western caused inflation but unlike the west it’s in a weaker position .

I believe the main points are these: 1. Reduction of FDI and investor confidence due to the coup attempt and tragic geopolitical actions during the aftermath of the Arab spring especially in Libya, Syria, Iraq. Turkey over reached and tried dueling with the big boys. 2. Turkiye imports intermediate goods to process into finished goods hence its very import dependent 3. Massive real estate money laundering which drove up cost of housing relative to locals rent affordability. 4. Lots of spending in military projects probably with the aim of recreating part of the Ottoman empire😂😂😂 which is impossible but dont tell that to a dictator.

It's through civic nationality, for Türk identity actually means citizen of Turkey, and not ethnic Turkic as some racist right wing conservatives think so. We also have more Greek, Persian, Armenian, other Anatolian nations in us than Kurdish genetics. Turkic genetics are still in big play too, it's just that percentage changes nation to nation. Inner regions have more Turkic and Anatolian genetics compared to others, for instance. Türk is actually for Anatolian for Atatürk's idea of nationalism. When he said 'Ne mutlu Türk'üm diyene!' it wasn't to assimilate or degrade minorities into Turkic identity but to say we're of one nation of Turkey, which happens to be callled Türk, but it's not ethnic Turkic Türk. You can still be Kurd and Türkiye Türk'ü according to his view. It doesn't aim to assimilate or wipe entire race or ethnicity, it's just a way to remind us this whole country is founded by every member of Turkey, and it belongs to every single one of us. Like being Mexican-American, Turk-Deutsch etc. Political parties like MHP, İYİP, ZaferP don't want to understand it and they caused long term harm to this term and its meaning, leaving many traumas behind for all like Kurds, Alevis, Jewish etc. No wonder, Kurds don't want to be named Turk since it only mean Turkic Türk these days, they probably think it'd assimilate their Kurdish identity and they rightfully want to keep their identity unharmed, not letting it loose to silent racist operations. But they can still be Türk Vatandaşı and Kürt, like I can be Alevi descended (but apatheist) Türk. It's Turk of Türkiey not Türk of Turkic or any ethinic or racial identity. Türkiye Public can chose to identify as Türk Civilian or Anatolian, it's their choice.
