Hi friends-it's been a while! In this video, I'm going to show you guys how I made pots using some vintage plates and dishes I found at the thrift store. I haven't been a very big hand builder, but recently I've been doing it a lot more often. Making molds has become one of my favorite parts of the process because it makes the handbuilding so much easier. Enjoy, and thanks for watching!
Steps to mix your own plaster (I recommend USG #1 Pottery Plaster!)
0 if you are using a porous container to pour your mold, you should first coat whatever you are casting with some kind of mold release (Vaseline, Crisco, oil soap, etc.)
1 weigh out 70 parts water first and set it aside, then weigh out 100 parts dry plaster
2 sift the plaster through your hands into the water, breaking up any clumps; it should form a sort of mountain in the middle (always add plaster to water, and not the other way around, so that water can fully hydrate the plaster!)
3 let the plaster slake/sit in the water for 3-4 minutes to allow the plaster to hydrate
4 after waiting, thoroughly, and gently, mix the plaster to break clumps and avoid adding too many air bubbles
5 before pouring, lightly mist your molds, which will help get a very smooth surface
6 pour and allow 30-40 minutes for the plaster to harden (it will heat up)
7 when the plaster is hardened, remove it from the mold, clean up any sharp edges, and allow it to air dry completely before the first use

This video got recommended to me at the perfect time! I was just thinking about whether I wanted to try slip casting and form-based handbuilding, and I think you gave me the push to try it! Thank you!

How does the soil not come out of the holes?

if you mean for when you're putting the soil in the pot in regards to the size of the drainage holes - you are supposed to put in 'drainage screens' before you start potting in order to cover the size of the holes without the soil all falling out. the holes have to be as big as they are due to the nature of the ceramic vessel. you secure the screens over the hole with these loops of wire that go through the grid and kind of hook it to the bottom from the inside. i am not sure how to explain it properly but there are some good tutorials around on how to prepare a bonsai pot for planting :)
